"He’s got massive wealthy behind him to market his scribbles. Just like that idiot Alec monopoly. (who manages to make even worse scribbles)" I wouldn't say I'm a particular fan of his work but it's very dense to call his work " scribbles ". I doubt if you did any graffiti it would be as good. His work is more than just the usual words sprayed on a garage wall, but there are other artists out there that get far less credit and produce work, that i'm my opinion is better. Look at someone like Damien Hirst though. He's made millions out of cutting up animals. His for artwork isn't even created by him. He gets others to paint them for him. I would say he's far more overrated. Or was in the nineties. Now he just dates models half his age. I wonder what they see in him...

" Interesting comment about Hirst not creating his art, this isn't uncommon, Leonardo DaVinci had artists paint for him, Rubens painted the faces and hands, Warhol had his factory, Weiwei didn't personally make all those porcelain sunflower seeds! I'm merely naming a few off the top of my head there are so many. As for Banksy I have no opinion on him, but he seems to divide opinion.

"Art comes in many ways and forms, what some love some will hate, same with Banksy Personally I like something that catches my attention, like a street artist in Eastern Europe who is changing the look of everyday outside pavements, plants, etc by adding characters to them. It makes me think what is going through your head that what we just see as a or a crack in the pavement is the start of your canvas, as an example. Then you have things deemed “modern” art.... 6 blue painted squares on a wall; a white canvas with paint thrown at it, something I imagine my kid to bring back from nursery; or my favourite a carpet (no pattern) just hanging on the wall If we all liked the same thing life would be very boring and we’d have nothing to discuss !"

He managed to make a living out of his passion and he makes a lot of money out of it. He is an inspiration rather than someone I want to shit on. The guy uses spray can on a wall and ppl are ready to spend million to have it ! Even if we agree or not with his art, while I am working for somebody I don't like... He is living the dream

"Seriously, he's just a shitty graffiti artist, why do people put him on a pedestal the knob Ok his stencilling isn’t for everything but he’s got great marketing. A bit like Zorro." He’s had a management team right from the beginning. He’s not some average guy that graffitis. It’s a business model with very rich execs at the helm. There’s no one that gets promoted by news channels for spray painting walls - unless someone is paying a hefty price for the promotion. Like I’d mentioned earlier, check Alec monopoly. It’s the same business model, both have very wealthy backers. It’s more to do with “laundering” than art.

" Banksy usually sprays his stuff onto walls in places that are economically depressed thus ensuring that the area in question is given a boost through tourism and putting it on the map... he also responds to requests from people who ask that he paints something on their building so as to help them raise funds

"If you Google “Banksy art”, in images the first one unsurprisingly is the girl with the red balloon. Is that a mess? Because most people would see it as an iconic piece of art." He may make iconic pieces. They’re generally all plagiarised though. They ARE contemporary pieces, same as Damien Horst, Warhol etc. I consider art to be something that takes skill, patience and deep thought to create. There are plenty of amazing artists who’s work never see the light of day. Banksy is only “art” to those that know nothing about art. His pieces are a complete meme and, used for money laundering - rather than being ‘great works of art’. Just so no one thinks that I’m being overtly harsh, I relate banksy to Rolex. Those that know nothing of watches think of Rolex as being the greatest. It’s the same with banksy.

You’re just being a snob really. Something isn’t magically crap just because it’s popular. And just because other artists are less well known, doesn’t automatically invalidate Banksy’s work. Not sure about the Rolex analogy. Presumably with watches, there can be an objective measure of quality, whereas art is almost entirely subjective.

Lowry mucks about with paint, drawling lots of very similar looking people in similar looking industrial scenes on small bits of paper.

"Blimey, this has escalated since I last checked in. Nice to see people so passionate about art, and thoroughly amusing to see how furious it's making people, too. " Art should make people feel something. If that is anger then it has had an effect. The queues for Dismaland, and the boost to Weston-super-Mare, speaks volumes for his popularity and the business model of putting art where the economy could use a boost. I enjoyed my Fab social at Dismaland.

"I always wonder if the people who slate him would paint over one of his pieces if he sprayed up their property. Of course they fucking wouldn’t They’d be cashing in. " Apparently, they would inflict GBH before taking the money. Slave Labour was removed from Poundland in Wood Green (North London) and went to auction at over £200k, before it was withdrawn. The replacement covered over the spot instead of leaving a damaged wall.

"I always wonder if the people who slate him would paint over one of his pieces if he sprayed up their property. Of course they fucking wouldn’t They’d be cashing in. " That’s purely economical. I don’t “dislike” his work: I just find it juvenile and gimmicky. If he chose to come and paint my garage door - I would adore him. (I would then sell it and, buy a folio of Shakespeare’s)

"Seriously, he's just a shitty graffiti artist, why do people put him on a pedestal the knob" He's a very clever artist who makes subtle social and political comments with his work...like the police sniper looking down his rifle scope and the little boy with the bliwn up bag that hes about to pop...or the boy and girl...the boy has flowees behind his back and shes got a club with nails through it behind hers... His work isnt done by commission..he just chooses a place and works..if that is someones property it becomes owned by the property owner...made a lot of people rich. The fact that he keeps his identity private makes his motives and reasons mysterious which in turn drives the popularity cos everyone loves a puzzle. If you were Bristol born ypu'd understand.

"I like seeing a Banksy and live where I can see a fair few. I have wondered if I produced something that could pass as a Banksy and it gets, wrongly, attributed to Banksy does that make it a Banksy? " No. He has an official list of his art filed with his public reps.

It's a discussion. Your OP, and the subsequent threat of violence, is very clear. That doesn't stop others expressing a different opinion and responding to comments. You know that.

"Seriously, he's just a shitty graffiti artist, why do people put him on a pedestal the knob It's another case of the emperor's New clothes isn't it. Is that supposed to be some sort of analogy? " How rude. Look we all know the story, the emperor's New clothes walk's down the street naked one sycophant decided to say what a marvelous outfit how amazing he looked, for fear of seeming uncool or not wanting to stand out everyone in the crowd follows suit until it's a mass hysteria about his new clothes, until one person has the bottle to stand up and say actually he's naked and slowly everyone else follows saying that he nude. Bubble burst he runs back to castle. As yet bankys hasn't had his bubble burst but soon enough. It's just modern pop culture, hype hype and more hype. If people are willing to be suckered into the hysteria and pay ridiculous amounts of money then. More fool them. Tbh bankys is probably have a good laugh at their expense anyway. It's not bankys that's the issue its the media frenzy and stupid people who are like sheep following the crowd and in most cases completely missing the point of the works in the first place. So yes it is,to answer your question.
