Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Apparently, we live longer, happier lives without husbands and children but men have better lives if they're married.

Obviously a heteronormative study but, that aside, this site (well the forum) often suggests the opposite is true.

I'm a lot happier now I'm not married, but I put that down to not being with a compatible partner. My ex has found someone lovely and they married last week. He's not the sort of person to be content on his own and I'm pleased for them.

Living with a partner and children brings responsibility and stress so I can see why women would be happier and live longer without it

I'm mentally and spuritually happier as a singleton than I was when I was married.

Conversely, although I have a pretty good social life, certainly better than when I was married, I'm lonelier.

Is that the trade off?

I'm definitely happier than when I was married and I'm sure my ex is happier too...altho he now has 2 more kids with his new partner to worry about!

I miss the social side of things that come with being married but I love being in control of the heating thermostat and the TV remote so swings and roundabouts!! Lol!!

Everyone is focussing on single after divorce/split. The report indicates men don't fare well if they are single, whether previously attached or not.

I think women live longer generally and relationships are not hugely responsible for that, mainly it’s health based choices that men have an early age of death.

Many men do seem to make the same health choices as they would for asking for directions when lost. They just need a GPS for health now.

Mortality rates are changing all the time in the 80s the difference was approx 8 years and now it’s 4 by the time we all die it might be equal

Stats are useful and can tell us interesting things but the questions asked and the way that they are asked will always skew the data. Then the interpretation can tell a completely different story.

When ONS had a helpline my secret guilty pleasure was calling them for information I needed in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. (It was a long time ago.)

These studies have been around for a very long time, remember it being proven decades ago. The best studies were done with spinsters v bachelors using large numbers

Though most studies I've read conclude that it only works for those that have never been married because there's not enough data available to be comparable for divorcees/cohabiters
