"Apparently, we live longer, happier lives without husbands and children but men have better lives if they're married. Obviously a heteronormative study but, that aside, this site (well the forum) often suggests the opposite is true. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/may/25/women-happier-without-children-or-a-spouse-happiness-expert Any views, or was this discussed when I was busy elsewhere? " Mmmm, if women are the required component for everything being good - I’m available for friendship to any gay guys in the spirit of uplifting

"I’m definitely happier without my husband And, according to the research, you'll have a longer life. Last time I saw my ex he looked 10 years older than me, (and I am being kind), and given that he is 4years younger..... " Also supporting the findings of the report.

"“Married people are happier than other population subgroups, but only when their spouse is in the room when they’re asked how happy they are. When the spouse is not present: fucking miserable,” he said. That made me snort! My man friends do seem to need a woman in their lives, whereas my women friends seem happier single. Or wishing they were single... Not all, but most. " That bit made me but I decided it was too provocative for the start of the thread. I am sure there are happily married women.

"I thought women lived longer than men regardless of being married or single. " Yes. But the factors for this are interesting: http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20151001-why-women-live-longer-than-men (Other reports and articles available that cover other factors but this is one I can post.)

Russian men are likely to die 13 years earlier than Russian women

" I'm mentally and spuritually happier as a singleton than I was when I was married. Conversely, although I have a pretty good social life, certainly better than when I was married, I'm lonelier. Is that the trade off?

"I'll tell you why this is. When the split happens, the women get the house, high regular monthly payments and a comfortable lifestyle. The guy gets a park bench. *dons tin hat and waits*" Everyone is focussing on single after divorce/split. The report indicates men don't fare well if they are single, whether previously attached or not.

"I think women live longer generally and relationships are not hugely responsible for that, mainly it’s health based choices that men have an early age of death. Sure there’s a few cases to prove both sides. " Many men do seem to make the same health choices as they would for asking for directions when lost. They just need a GPS for health now.

"I don't think this site contradicts the findings OP. Why do you say that?" The posts of single women looking for relationships to feel fulfilled and the number of married men posts about their difficult unfulfilled marriages.

"I don't think this site contradicts the findings OP. Why do you say that? The posts of single women looking for relationships to feel fulfilled and the number of married men posts about their difficult unfulfilled marriages. " Ah. My take on that is that men want the emotional stability of their marriage but still enjoy variety in sex. Women in general are more romantic in seeking a relationship while the reality of one is quite different. This is why many who've had relationships are happy to be and stay single.

"More or Less is challenging the data in the report. What does this mean?" More or Less is a Radio 4 programme that looks at statistics. Basically, it's how you cut the data that gets the result in the report but how you ask the questions generates the data.

Then the interpretation can tell a completely different story. When ONS had a helpline my secret guilty pleasure was calling them for information I needed in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. (It was a long time ago.)
