Should grown men wear band t-shirts?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

On the footy shirts thread the other day, the question was asked "should grown men wear band t-shirts?"

I've given it some thought and decided that I don't really have an opinion. I gave them up yonks ago, the masses can decide whether it's acceptable or not.

What it did make me realise though was that if I see an older (40s+) person wearing a band t-shirt then I tend to make a judgement on them. The question for me is not 'if' you wear, it's 'what' you wear.

For instance 'The Smiths'; brilliant band, I've got all their albums but wearing their tee displays an overeagerness to appear cult or edgy. Go for Echo and the Bunnymen instead, everyone will think you know about music.

Here's my guide to what your band t-shirt says enough you:

Beatles - probably a bit up yourself, like McCartney

Punk's not dead/Anarchy/ Sex Pistols - doubtless a civil servant, accountant or bank manager.

Frankie Says - if you're male, you've probably raided your boyfriend's half of the wardrobe. If your female, you've probably raided your fab straight boyfriend's half.

Acid, smiley face - homeless

Heavy Rock - sadly, most people in their 50s + who are still wearing a band t-shirts are rock fans. The shirt you wear says a lot about you so there's one thing I don't get about this. "Judas Priest" for instance, basically says "I'm a scruffy bastard." Well we don't need a sign saying you're a scruff bastard because we can see by your unkempt hair and your scraggy jeans that you've worn for 2 weeks that you're a scruffy bastard, it doesn't need spelling out pal.

Does anyone else see people in band tees and make a snap judgement?

I was going to include Tv and film tee-shirts such as Star Wars, Star Trek and GoT but sometimes I think it's best when I say nothing at all.

"I was going to include Tv and film tee-shirts such as Star Wars, Star Trek and GoT but sometimes I think it's best when I say nothing at all."

Yes, that's probably quite wise Torch.

The only t-shirts I pass negative judgement on (apart from the ones which have massive logos on) are the Che Guevara ones mainly because I associate them with the champage socialists of uni. With bands I think ah cool, they probably have been to see them/like them a lot.

Also to be honest you just described band t-shirts that you buy on the high street ignoring most genres of music. But hey if those sweeping generalisations and a lack of knowledge about music make you feel superior it's all good

I love it when people wear something that gives you an insight into their personality. Much rather that than seeing a sea of people wearing their Boss jumpers or Ralph Lauren polo shirts.

An excellent thread Torch

I would also add, a 'Rolling Stones' or 'Ramones' t-shirt probably suggests the wife or girlfriend has bought this for him from a mainstream high street retailer - maybe TopMan or New Look?

See, 2 or 3 years ago I would have thought that was a bloody good point

It still is, just watered down

When the high street stores and the supermarkets started knocking out £5 to £10 band tees in their millions, it kinda pissed on that vibe

I bet if you asked 100 guys about the band on the t-shirt he was wearing 10 would be wearing them cos their wife picked it up in Asda, another 10 might have like the band in their youth cos their mates did and they wanted to be cool too and another 10 or 20 went to a concert once but other than that, know fuck all about the band emblazoned across their podge

Then the rest will bore your tits off cos they've found a common link

Thanks OP for making my decision easier re my tour tee shirts.

There and to the left a bit

I own a couple of band t-shirts (Madness/The Beat) and buy them because I like the design as much as I like the band - I'd buy others too if they weren't so flipping expensive - if people want to judge me based on that so be it.

The only time I question the reason behind someone wearing a band t-shirt (whilst respecting their right to wear it) is when I see teenage girls wearing Ramones or Rolling Stones t-shirts (which seem to be vogue in recent years) and wonder if they could name a song by the band or even know that it's a band t-shirt they are wearing.

A middle age man wearing a band T shirt is a totally different kettle of fish than wearing a football top. It’s dependant on whether I like the band or not and how cool I perceive them to be. Unless of course they’re wearing a lame band T shirt ironically, in which they’re cool as fuck.

I value the fact I still love music as much as I did when I was a teenager and if I want to wear a T shirt of a band I like, I will. It usually starts many an interesting conversation with other people who have excellent taste. Middle age men wearing cool band T shirts give you hope they’re still some decent people about, what takes it away is seeing grown men taking up golf and becoming intolerable bores. I promised to myself when I was young I’d never take up golf, I’m 45 and still have no intention of putting on a Pringle sweater.

I tend to design my own tshirts, jumpers etc, i laugh when I hear someone paid £50 for a branded tshirt, I just think of the money I've saved and can put that towards another holiday, off on another next week so I've designed 6 tshirts for next week and all in have cost £20 so more money to spend whilst away ??

Years ago I was asked to play football and I didn't have any boots so got a pair for £15, soccer sports specials ??

mate spent £100 on some adidas, I scored 2 and set up 1, he had a shocker ??????

Not fussed what people think about what I'm wearing, it amazes me though how younger generations are influenced and how they dress and all look alike, the power of social media is strong!!

"On the footy shirts thread the other day, the question was asked "should grown men wear band t-shirts?"

"Judas Priest" for instance, basically says "I'm a scruffy bastard." Does anyone else see people in band tees and make a snap judgement?

People are entitled to wear whatever they want. People are wrong to judge.

For example all I wear when I'm at the gym is superhero logo tops. I like it and don't care what anyone else thinks.

I don’t mind band t-shirts bought at the gig at the time that are still worn (and worn in), but probably only for the bands I like - there’s a very favourite chap of mine that wears a few of these, you see.

I don’t wear band t-shirts myself as the logo/wording gets stretched out across my boobs and looks like shouting. I found this out after once buying a Parklife t-shirt at the gig alongside my friend; and hers said Parklife across the front and mine said PARKLIFE when we put them on. Never again.

Times are changing, but there’s still an element that sees that it’s ok to devote your entire life to a football (or any other sport) team (religiously attend matches, watch on TV at home or in the pub, celebrate when they win, or cry when they lose, but to put even a tenth of that passion into a TV show, or movie, or video game is somehow wrong. I would include bands in this.

The bands and eras mentioned by pretty much everyone who has stated a preference are dated to say the least. I don't get your point or its relevance.

Sensitive subject it seems. People should wear what they feel is comfortable for them, that's for sure. Some have just took it as a bit of fun whilst others have gone into self-defence mode in an attempt to justify how they dress and obvious insecurities have surfaced, it's only natural.

If they're unsure, they should start a thread asking what people their age should wear?

Well I've lived a life, that certain sections of society has judged me for wearing certain clothing

However I can take the Ops post as a gentle ribbing.

Personally I love wearing my rock t-shirts but I'll only wear the band's I love. So Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Sabbath etc..in fact me and another middle-aged guy at work often slag each other off as he's a Status Quo fan, so plenty of fun

Certainly one girl in the office came in wearing a Motorhead t-shirt not long back, so I was going to give her a long lecture about wearing that ! with no knowledge of the band, and when I asked her which was her favourite album..she not only told me but most of the tracks it appears her dad got her into them when she was younger Cest la Vie

Band t shirt, film related clothing, football shirts, whatever - all just about people displaying their identity. It’s 2019, who cares what people are wearing. If people need to judge others then that’s their insecurities. Unless it’s a clearly outrageously offensive slogan or whatever.

Or Crocs, I’ll judge them

I wear Maiden, Metallica and a few other band shirts from time to time. Been a fan since they all started so its an allegiance thing not a fashion statement. Wouldn’t wear a football shirt, unless I’m going to the match, but that’s my choice, others will feel differently, and good luck to them.

Anyone doesn’t like it, go do one quite frankly!
