Conversation was mainly how thry saw money as God

Now my question is does money make you genuinely happy with your life or is it a false happiness

My life would be a lot happier if I had more money.

My life is very happy, I like my life. But money would add to that happiness.

But money also doesn’t solve problems, and doesn’t make you happy. It can just add to it.

It helps in making things happen, holidays for example which in turn lift your spirits and give you something to look forward to which always helps, but no... money itself is a pointless commodity if all you have is money alone

Now ... to some, my 'comfortable' would be seen as near poverty yet, to others, abject wealth

Do I need to work? Yes

If I fell out of work would I need to worry about where my next meal came from? No

I'm content with that

This is what I was trying to say don't think they got it

To me it seemed like all they cared about was how much they had what they could buy with it and how it gave them social status in their own words

It buys me new running shoes and entry to races and they both make me happy.

However, if I didn't have my friends and family around me, I'd be pretty miserable, no matter how many shoes I had, so no, not just money.

I am going to cite the case of someone formerly quite close to me

Lives in a converted stables with views out over a nature reserve

Drives around in a Merc or a Jag

Dresses in designer labels and wears designer branded make up

Always turned out in best collar and cuffs

The world is good to her from an outsiders perspective

From the flip side ...

(Just about) holds down a job that has seen her on the verge of a breakdown and sees her taking chill out pills on a daily basis

Goes to her Mums for tea because she can't afford to put food on the table

Relies on friends to pay for nights out and holidays

but hey, she looks good and she looks like she's got a few bob

To some, that is all that matters

I wouldn't know what an Audi looks like.

If they are happy then that's good. But I usually find that people who need to shout about what they have (like they are doing) are very unhappy. Like the people who post lovey crap on Facebook - heading for divorce.

Money is a big help. People who live in poverty or with very little money long term have more problems than those who don't. Statistically they suffer from ill health more, die younger etc. The winter is horrible if you can't afford heating for more than an hour a day and towards the end of the month you don't have enough food to eat regularly. So yes, money does make you happy or at least happier.

Once you get past a certain level of wealth more money probably doesn't make you happy but I don't buy into "we're poor but we're happy" real grinding long term poverty does not make for a happy life

When you understand how money is created then you understand it really is the root of all evil and shouldn't exist at all,because the more money there is,the more debt there is,the more debt there is the more money there is. If everyone paid off all their debts including the governments then there would not be one penny in circulation and you would still not have the money to pay off the interest because it doesn't exist because all money is created out of debt. Think of it as a giant pyramid with the money creators at the top and us mere peasants at the bottom. And everytime new money is created it steals value from the money that is already in circulation which ultimately gives us less buying power in the shops because prices will continue to rise to stay inline with inflation from the new money that is constantly being created. So yes you could call money god because only god could create something out of nothing.

I grew up below the poverty line, was very comfortable when I was married, and am now back below the poverty line. I honestly don't care about money. I'm happier now than I've ever been. More money would give me more options perhaps, but I don't desire material things I can't have so I'm content enough. It helps that I'm great at budgeting.

If someone is obviously more motivated by money I find it a turn off.

God can bring faith and hope. Money however can not. Once you have all that you want and, have grasped that which was deemed as unattainable: it no longer has any allure.

Once all of mankind has let you down, God shall still be there. He will be there when you’ve achieved and, got bored of attaining wealth. Having something that is beyond/greater than all earthly goods is strength.

I think very few people are genuinely motivated only by money for it's own sake, those that are rarely spend it. Many more people are motivated by possessions and money is the means to that end.

I think very few if anybody on this thread is genuinely living in long term poverty. The kind where if your shoes wear out you can't replace them and your clothes aren't clean because you can't afford to wash them. I've seen that kind of poverty in India, the people were dispirited, under nourished and unhealthy, money would make their lives a whole lot happier.

Everyone has an initial spike of happiness due to a sudden increase in money, however it fades out to your "natural" level.

ie, if you are depressed you havent had a holiday in a few years, then you will be depressed you only had 2 in a year after a while.

If you are happy having no holidays, then you will be happy going on 2 a year.

Same as me I am so not money motivated I live within my means or maybe a little over but I've my health my children and I love a happy life its great having dreams and ambition but I think it was the arrogance that they portrayed that I actually found repulsive

I don't think money makes people happy. Some of the happiest people I've met have nothing, the bitter bad attitudes have come from people who think they have money.

I will agree money makes everyone's lives easier. A problem free life due to money doesn't mean a person is happy though
