It’s hard for a man to know what to wear when he’s reached his 40’s. Look at Elvis, as soon as he got to his 40’s he started wearing a Sequinned jump suit, now I’m not saying we should all be wearing one, but they’re very versatile and could be worn to any occasion.

A lot of men think it’s perfectly normal to wear football tops, (as was touched on in another thread), this is a big no and is never acceptable, except when you’re actually playing for the team.

Women seem to like men in suits for some Unfathomable reason, I think they’re incredible dull and cliche and I can’t wait to get out of them.

Any clothes with big logos on are out too.

I don't presume to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do but I have read that a well-fitted suit is to some women as lingerie is on a woman to men.

I, for one, feel great in a suit or tux.

I am 30 but keep it simple by dressing for the occasion and always wearing clothes that fit.

I'm a slight man so I don't, for example, wear baggy clothing.

Think dressing as you please is best option, if something is not right when I wear it I look and feel uncomfortable.

Having said that I will often wear jeans and a shirt. Sometime for club or meets I will go for the suit look but never a tie.

Generally I find I make the clothes look good

See I'd be of the opinion,

No man should be prevented or told what not to wear !

However , such as grown men in football shirts their freedom to expresses themselves should not extend to immunity from ridicule of the clown like spectacle

I saw a guy in a Breton striped softly worn in tee with these casual trousers and turnups, and rocking some brown leather braces recently. He looked a little like Brandon Flowers. What struck me was how comfy and yet together he looked and I had a hipster fanny flutter.

It does depend on the person.

Just be happy in how you dress as it reflects your personality.

I would say - retain your dignity. At 40 you’ve been there and done that. You have a right to dress to suit. Nice shoes, nice jacket etc. Treat yourself. I know it’s not old, but at that age you’ve earned it.

Own your image; It doesn’t belong to anyone else.

I think enjoying clothes is key but although I agree that you're in great shape I don't think that's a necessary criteria for stylish dressing.

I have work clothes and casuals

I really detest the whole dress shirt, smart jeans and brogue look

At weekend, I can normally be found in comfy lightweight pants (think the ones that climbers wear), a hoodie and trainers

I don't drink or eat in bars that dictate I dress differently to that

I'm not out to impress anyone

I think it depends upon the occasion. If going out then either a smart t-shirt or shirt and a jacket with jeans or chinos.

But if at work then a decent, nice fitting suit. However, with recent weather, shorts, flip flops and a t-shirt.

Make sure you feel comfortable and I think more importantly, you match your partner

I do not agree with any of this really I love wearing a suit think it’s perfectly fine to wear a football shirt on right occasions that is ( not a every day piece of clothing or somthing is wear on a date ) such as taking the kids to a football match and to be fair I just wear what I’m comfortable in and he’ll why wouldn’t I.

Ha ha ha ha - mercifully my formative fashion was built around my musical tastes which were Two Tone/mod inspired and enduring - so think 501's, Ben Sherman's, button downs, tennis shirts and the like - although it's mainly t-shirts these days unless I am going 'smart'

My 40s have been and gone but the dilemma only gets worse.

Agree about big logos, I would throw in ripped jeans too for people at the top end of their 40s at least.

Wear good shoes, everything else will fall into place.

My body and shape hasnt changed much in 15 years and my wardrobe hasnt changed much either.

Ive added T shirts and jackets but by jeans are the same boot cut ive had for over a decade.

Men in suits are HOT.

Jeans and an ironed shirt always looks good. Avoid deck shoes yuck, only allowed on a yacht.

T shirts that have gone out of shape are also a no no.

It really puts me off if the guy looks like he can’t be bothered especially when I’ve spent 2 hours getting ready!

Just because you're in your 40's shouldn't change the way you dress. Just wear whatever YOU want to wear whether it's in fashion or not, there are no hard and fast rules. I am in my 560's and wear the same sort of clothes as I did in my 20's, so what nobody gives a fuck basically!

Depends entirely on the season.

I'm 42, but now summer is here, for average wear I've tended to shift from skinny jeans and sculpted hoodie to slim fit shorts and muscle t-shirts. High top trainers change to low tops with my laceless Polos being my pair of choice, for really baking hot days, switch to muscle vest and flip flops.

Shoes tend to just get worn at clubs and such like sometimes, with a pair of brown Italian leather chisel toes being my favourite.

I use a motorbike every day , so it's usually boot cut jeans , boots and leather jacket . If I'm going on a longer spin it'll be leather jeans with v.tight fitting longjohns underneath . I rarely wear "normal" clothes .

When I was younger I cycled a lot. Unfortunately I haven’t been able for the last 20 years as I got a puncture.

I still wear all the clothing though. I get some strange looks but I feel comfortable.

The shoes are very slippery though. Especially if the pavement is wet.

Gym king muscle fit trackie from JD sports with or without ever having exercised. Seems all the rage when walking past the pubs with the guys having d*unk copious amounts of lager and smoking outside

For me it's what I am comfortable in and it fits well be it jeans and tee or a suit. Despite a trim defined body no blooming vests.

I don’t think I’ll ever grow out of Fred Perry polos, jeans and trainers. I find polos much better in the day time than a t-shirt, strangely. I just find t-shirts better for lounging around in.

Gonna have to give you a nope on this one. Depends.. I guess if you work in a bad suit, yeah. But otherwise, it's almost an art form to master wearing a suit that works for you. Try not wearing square toe shoes and see how you get on.

No again! My word, this is poorly thought out advice. How's one to mooch about the hot streets of the med without a nice bit of sports wear.

My only advice would be - dress aunthenticly and authoritively. If you're going to try something out of your comfort zone, own it.

As long as I'm not breaking any laws in my choice of attire then whatever I feel comfortable in is absolutely spot on. I still have a shirt that I bought from Topshop when I was 17 that I like to wear. It doesn't occur to me that anyone else has to approve of it
