The red oil light came on, on my dash the other day, I checked the oil, there was no oil in the engine whatsoever, put some oil in hoping I hadn’t done any damage, but I’ve got a nasty rattle coming from the engine. Took it to the garage and the mechanic said, yeah your engine is fucked, went to another garage to get a second opinion, the mechanic said yeah your engine is fucked. In conclusion the oil light on a dash is pointless and I’m a dick for not checking my oil.

Don’t make the same mistake I made and check your fluids properly. I’m off to buy another car!

When the oil light came on, did you switch off the engine immediately?

"When the oil light came on, did you switch off the engine immediately?

No, like an idiot I didn’t! "

So your conclusion of the oil light being pointless isn’t quite right

If it comes on, bang the clutch down, switch off the engine (don’t turn the key all the way because it might activate the steering lock) and coast to a safe place to stop.

Let it all cool down, add some oil and it’s usually alright

You see I thought it was like the petrol where you get a bit of a warning that's it low. Op I shall learn from your mistake.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll remember that for next time!

I only drove a bit further with the oil light on, I thought it would mean it was low not empty, but lesson learned, my fault for not checking regularly. Costly mistake.

I'm glad I got a mention in your OP

A world all of his own

The problem is, that red light is the low oil pressure light, not low oil level warning light.

They're set ridiculously low, 2-3-4psi, so by the time they trigger, you've usually starved the bottom end of oil and as you've found out, the engine is toast.

Suffolk - East Anglia

My fluid levels are always good. I use my dipstick whenever I get the chance and the Mrs always likes a bit of coolant from me.
