I saw an article on the bbc website earlier today which advises caution in buying one at the moment. Currently they are supporting updates from google but it’s thought that this will soon stop

"Watch this

I think the question should actually be "can we trust any of the tech companies"

Between the hardware and apps I really dont think any one of them is more "safe" than the other. Data is data regardless of whether it is mined via so called hidden chips or upfront in the form of "dont worry we will keep your data safe" apps.

Just seems too convenient for my liking that this campaign against Huawei is being played out against the back drop of a trade war between USA and China.

I have one at the moment and I'm not overly concerned. Apparently the updates will only be blocked for phones not on the market yet. Saying that I would be reluctant to buy/upgrade to one at the moment, just incase. Which is a shame as the P30 pro looks the absolute business.

Not due an upgrade until the end of the year, by which time things should be a lot clearer. At that point whatever the latest OnePlus is would be my alternative.

Well considering Google are limiting and later phasing out access to the Android operating system, the UK government is being strongly discouraged by the US to even sell them and we are already disallowing them from the 5G network, putting them on a futureproofing backfoot to begin..

...nah. no problem at all..

Still. Nice camera zoom... No?

I wasnt impressed, i returned my p30 and went for a galaxy s10 instead.

I found the camera poor on the p30 , bluetooth glitchy on music play back and in bright sunlight the screen kept dropping off 'bright' mode (over temp issue)

I purchased a P9 light some time ago and am very satisfied with the overall performance and durability it's shown...more so considering it was much cheaper than an equivalent Samsung.

Allegations of spying are like like the pot calling the kettle black. It's a well known fact that for years the NSA has had backdoors into every mobile device manufactured by competing firms and the operating systems that ran them.

The campaign against Huawei is a blatant attempt to maintain dominion through dishonest means. So much for free and fair competition.

If Google block Huawei just install Aptoide for Android apps.

I have the p30 Pro, and hubby has the latest model of Mate line; they're both fantastic phones and while we may lose some of the android support in the future Huawei have already confirmed that they had a contingency plan for this, including development of its own software.

I expect that by the time either 5G becomes available consistently or the service is cut off completely it will probably be contract time anyway

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Of course they are good, there is a market dominated by iphone and samsung.. to even get a bite of the apple, see what i did there, your product has gotta blow the others out of the water..

Lieca getting on board was a real bonus the Huawei, the average man (or woman) can get their grubby undeserving mits on a bit of leica technology..

Now for the negative side..

The peoples Republic have as many people employed in espionage as the population of the uk. They are continually attempting to hack into other countries networks and gain data..

The links between Huawei and the peoples Republic are so entwined, it may as well have the head office painted red and be done with it.

The technology within that phone is so complex and locked down, its impossible to fully know what is going on and with who it is passing your details..

So what you think..

Well, i suspect that your social media log in details will be the same as your bank account/inland revenue/nhs/etc..

That you have your emails coming into you phone..

That your purchases are made on your phone..

You text friends and family personal messages..

Now if less than 1% of the uk population owned a huwei phone, thats over half a million people..

What is the likelihood that in that number there will be government officials, defence sector staff, heads of financial institutions..but they have all been warned about huwei phones and some places have even banned them being brought into places of work..

But hold on, what about those people, they have family and some may even have friends.. yeh, i know.. a banker with friends is a hard one to swallow.. but they may just send a private text message or have a conversation with someone who has a huwei phone..

And with 60million people employed by the peoples Republic to eavesdrop and hack our networks and those of our allies, its no stretch of the imagination that every bit of information sent to and from a huwei phone is scanned and added to a database to build a profile of you the owner and everyone you know..

Sounds delusional but its not..

Governments worldwide are worried about the threat huwei phones pose to their national security and without trying to cause panic, have taken the unprecedented step of announcing as such..

I'd say the corporate mud slinging has more to do with the whole trade war thing than anything else, in the grand scheme of things. There's a lot of shouting about privacy issues linked to the Chinese government, but one has to wonder why an American company would react in such a way, throwing their best selling phone off their OS. It's a wonder how much influence Trump has had with that choice. If you're concerned, play it safe and get another brand for now, and see how it pans out two years from now

And America hasn't already been doing that for the past decade? Funny how some think it's ok for the west to do it but don't line it if others start doing the same. Where's you facts about 60 million eaves shoppers working to collect data from or is that your imagination taking over? Sometimes throwing in random unsubstantiated figures just for effect dilutes what else is started and brings all into question.

Interesting that Huawei 5G is not being banned from Uk but being limited. If the threat was credible I'm surprised UK and other all European countries haven't banned the use.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of this thinking isn't a spillover from the Russiab/Trump communications fiasco that that is still to be proven.

As far as apps are concerned, Huawei may just start emulating the current blocked ones, or one could be used to hide the phone identity much like an IVP hiding your ISP address.

Wonder what economic effect this will have on Apple products as China produces them. Have Apple stopped trading with China?

Very interesting how not a shred of proof has, been presented that Huawei is actually used for spying and covert surveillance as opposed to the, numerous data dumps and leaks over the years that the NSA and its "five eyes" program monitors and snoops virtually everything that happens digitally around the world.

Fact of the matter is the USA is incapable of coming to grips that their era of technological superiority has come to an end. Cutting off Huawei from google or access to high tech components will just accelerates america's decline. Huawei will just switch to its own OS that will be used in the world's largest consumer market. The chinese will boycott american products so apple will take a beating in one of its largest markets. Chinese firms will step in and supply the chips and components leaving companies like Qualcomm in the dust.

Fact of the matter is that these measures will hurt america more in the long run and make chinese companies more self sufficient.

Agree with the first statement. The west have been left behind. China started buying all of American world debt, they may well own a lot of 'american' companies and could pull them.

Trump was earlier saying that a deal could be met, China was saying no deal. Trump didn't get what he wanted and spits out the dummy as the bath seeps away.

In reality I do not think it'll make much difference. Most people tend to spread the costs of their phone by buying through contract. That means a change for most at the end of 2 yes. Some of us like myself buy outright, unlocked and either secondhand or manufacturers returns (saving at least 50-60% of RRP), keeping the phone for years, my last one at Samsung Note4, I had as primary phone for many many years. Only thing I changed were the batteries in it. Still have it and love it. This Huawei though is brilliant, great value as they bring out a new model every 6 months which drops the prices immensely.

If I feel I'm getting stuck without the updates (they are not always for a better experience either), then my note will still do what it says on the tin.

Huawei Have been preparing to launch their own OS for a number of years now. They’ve had services suspended from Android (OS updates, play store). That being said, it could be changed any minute - I just read an article mentioning negotiation with Huawei and allowing some services for now. Really difficult to say as the news of suspending services came over night.

Suggestion, iPhone or Pixel. Over priced but they own their own OS and app store/play store - with majority third party app integration.

1) The saudis are trying to buy google.

2) Huwaei have their own os they just never wanted to launch it. It will have google maps, google mail, youtube blocked on it if they ever do launch it. Instead they should just switch to sail fish https://sailfishos.org/ then they could compete.

Had Samsung S6 - smashed by falling off sofa onto carpet

Had Sony Z Ultra - shell bent in pocket

Would rather the Chinese spy on me than Americans anyways

The case shattered along with it! I bent down to tie my shoe, it slid out of my jeans case and all and the rest as they say, is history!

Maybe I got a duff model

Maybe haha, I loved mine at first OP6, but the battery is started to get worse and that is my biggest deal breaker.

Still a £360 phone.

I'm still struggling to see what my next upgrade will be. I spend far too much time on YouTube for it to be normal, so if Huawei doesn't have it then they aren't an option, looking into it, the only other brands that wouldn't drive me insane would be OnePlus or Razer if they make a 3rd one

OP7 Pro just came out with an all screen 90hz display 6.5"?, so that might be good for YouTube. Not sure about the speaker situation

I'd imagine that it's a risky proposition at the moment. Phones bought from now on won't get the full Google service or immediate updates as I understand it. I'd imagine that Huawei will bring out their own operating system to replace Google but it would be a gamble to guess what it will be like and it may have to be released without as much beta testing as would be ideal.

The P20 pro twoonths ago would have got you about £275 trade in. Yesterday I saw a few on FB market for sale at around 150!!!! Bargain in my opinion even stripped out and only used for a camera!
