When I'm on my own in a room I have to put on music . Even if I’m reading a paper or browsing net .

I can’t stand the silence .

Is silence golden , or deafening

I have a TV for much the same reason

I put it on for background noise, but rarely watch it

I find I actually 'hear' a lot during 'silence'. I'm okay with myself, not afraid to see the bigger picture, or take in insights usually hidden/muffled/distorted by the noise and bluster of everyday life

I don't have t.v. but always have music on even when I'm really busy at work I find music helps.

Coming home in the sunshine a couple of days ago and there was no traffic for once. It was bliss.

I like both. If I'm doing things I like music on, it helps me focus.

I love silence. I love being on my own to enjoy the silence.

When i have my day off work and when my children are in School or are with their dad, i just enjoy the peace. No telly. No music. It recharges me.

Can there ever be any such a thing as pure silence? I think you'd have to be completely deaf to truly understand what that means.

It can be quiet but there's always a sound coming from somewhere whether it's the sound of your partner's breath at night, the rustle of bed sheets, rain through an open window. It's quiet where i am now but i'm surrounded by birdsong, the distant lowing of cattle, a crow, the hum of a light aircraft.

In this you can appreciate quiet but it's never truly silence, you just have to listen.

I spend all my time at work talking with people.

I appreciate time with myself and my own thoughts immensely. I love silence and the ability to get into me undisturbed.

I can appreciate both equally - there are times when I need "noise" just to keep me company but also times when noise can be a distraction or you just want to be alone with your thoughts - I'll often late at night switch the TV off and just enjoy the silence.

As someone said above you can never have true silence though there's always a level of noise albeit in the background.

Right now I'm enjoying my back step with nothing more than a cup of tea, the buzz of bees and the sound of birdsong, along with muted traffic noise and the occasional plane overhead for company.

I love silence, I find it really recharging and I'm happy in my own company. But there's a lot to be said for comfortable silence with another. That's much more beautiful.
