I'm looking for some advice and guidance on where I should start with using make up.

Tips and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

It has to start with a good foundation then mascara and eyebrow pencil for me. I'm happy with that. Try and experiment, see what suits you... find your look. I'd love to be able to wear dramatic lipstick but it doesn't suit me.

Don’t forget the primer. The base is the most important to keep the make up fresh and stop it falling off

Try cheap makeup from Poundland to experiment with different techniques, once you've got the gist of it, buy some better stuff and some micellar water to remove it, but avoid waterproof mascara unless you want awkward questions from the wife!

Learn what colours suit you and why. Is your skin cool or warm toned? What works with your hair (wig) or eye colour? Google will give basic guides, but look for things that make your skin look radiant, your features pop, and just you looking like your best version of yourself.

I love the Boots No 7 colour matching service for foundation, but otherwise adore Mac for advice. In a larger city they won't bat an eye if it's not a cis woman wanting help (in fact in Manchester some brands offer special trans tutorials for Sparkle).

Look into tubing mascara. Supposed to be much easier to remove.

Start with the eyes first, then apply the face makeup. This is so that any mistake can be corrected without having to redo the foundation etc, and also in case any eyeshadow powder drops to the cheeks you don’t risk smudging it and so have to start again on the face makeup.

Every makeup artist I’ve used has done and said the same.

Contour gently, for more natural definition, unless you’re going for a dramatic look.

Decent brushes!! Invest in them x

Lots of tutorials about. When practicing use cheaper brands- Superdrug etc do good ones, so you’re not investing in, and wiping off expensive makeup. Nyx is a good brand that doesn’t cost a bomb, and illamasqua is great, bit more expensive, but the pigments are awesome x Don’t forget primer and setter too! No point looking gorgeous if the first hint of getting warm and your makeup smudges off.

Just have fun, and find looks that you love and feel reflect you x mwah! Viv x

A base is really important for makeup in my opinion. If your base is good, makeup looks a million times better when it's on your face.

I'd invest in a really good moisturiser that suits your skin. So if you've got dry skin, a hydrating one would be ideal and if your skin is oily a moisturiser that is matte will help control shine. It's important to take care of your skin too when wearing makeup otherwise you could break out and dry out your skin. I find a cleanser is the most gentle and effective way to remove makeup.

As for makeup, start with a base like foundation if you want to even out your skin and add some coverage. If you need more coverage introduce a concealer. More essentials are lipstick, lipbalm, bronzer, blush and mascara. You can buy eyebrow pencils too if you want to add shape. I would start simple then add more.
