It’s impossible to tone a muscle.

You’re welcome

Toning is just a friendly term for reducing body fat. If you would like to look "more toned" you need to either lose fat, gain muscle mass or both.

What sort of exercise routines do you follow?

I'm doing squats and crunches at the moment.

"I'm doing squats and crunches at the moment. "

Need to have an all body workout.

Crunches will give muscles but you won’t see them unless shredded all over.

Resistance training is the best way to burn fat to “tone”. And I suggest different exercises on different days as best way for time and recovery.

Biceps and back one day.

Chest shoulders and triceps next day.

Etc

Crunches can be done most days but last of the exercises as fast twitch muscles tire quickly but also recover quickly. Diet and read 70 best of getting in shape
