School sports day

Mold

It's my son's final sports day of primary school on Thursday.

Gone are the days of traditional events, in the name of inclusivity

What sports did you excel at when you were at school, or was it a loathsome experience?

Turning it on it's head, maybe we could have adult versions

Vibrating egg on a spoon, the sack race would be quite different etc.

I hated sport at school, I tried my best to avoid any of it (usually unsuccessfully) with all the usual excuses of forgot my kit or it's still in the wash at home. Strange then that since my mid 20's I've got really into fitness and do all sorts! Still not into competitive sports though.

School sports. Ugh. Nearly scared me off exercise for life.

200m and 400m

It’s all very well being inclusive but what about the people who like competitive sports. Not very inclusive for them.

My kids' school still does all the typical races and they still award a first, second and third place.

I hated sports day. I hated people looking at me as a child and having all the parents watching was my idea of hell. It's all well and good saying that everyone has their own talents and those that struggle with one thing will excel at another, but there really isn't any activity other than school sports day in which failure is so brutally public!

Fortunately my children aren't so self-conscious and take it on the chin.

I was good at most sports. I was on the Basketball and Gymnastics team.

For sports day I done the triple jump. I held the school record when I left.

That was kinda my problem, I got picked on enough about my appearance or for being crap at sport so being on display for the entire school to take this piss out of made me really self conscious. I couldn't care less now and am happy to be outside my comfort zone but as a teenager it was the worst thing in the world for me!
