Putting nets over trees and hedgerows to prevent birds from nesting should stop or be regulated some MPs say.Over 350,000 have signed a petition calling for the netting to become a criminal offence..Do you agree?

It shouldn't be allowed, we should be encouraging nature especially in hedgerows.

We currently have birds nesting in our loft due to some recent shody work on our roof. As annoying as seeing bird crap over our decking is, it is sweet hearing the chirping.

You’re not allowed to cut down trees that have birds nesting in them. Therefore developers stop the birds nesting and can chop down the trees or hedges.

It should be made illegal.

The practice of netting is being used by housing developers, who can in turn say that there are no nesting birds, and can then claim they can remove the trees to put up a poxy 2 up, 2 down

Birds need all the help they could get at the moment. Netting is wrong.

Got a wonderful blackbird nest in the ancient hedgerow on my boundary.

Perfect excuse to not cut the hedge for a couple of months.

The nets are only supposed to be placed up in development sites was my understanding because developers are not allowed to disturb a bird's nest once it's been established so would cost a lot of money in delays.

I do worry over the mindset of people why would you want to put netting over trees and hedges I love the birds that come onto my garden and encourage it any way I can I'm a wildlife lover and the thought of doing that so I don't get to see the amazing birds is madness

I've never seen it, only those spiky things to stop pigeons and seagulls landing on certain buildings. York city walls are covered in them, presumably to stop acidic bird shit damaging the ancient stone.

Think there's a mass generalisation happening here. I think certain netting should be allowed.

Arguments against it because of nesting I agree. As far as fruit then I don't see it as an issue.

I was once at the forefront of environmental pollution when younger. 40 yrs ago I had a T-shirt that said KEEP BRITAIN TIDY, EAT A PIGEON.

The issues ironically are primarily at the feet of planners, that's government departments. They could easily enforce protection of the trees and hedgerows. They often don't, neither do they forcefully insist on replanting equivalent appropriate replacements.

The government have been the biggest culprit in the removal of natural habitat in the name of progress. Now they want to try and bring in laws for individuals afterwards. Call me a cynic but here's another cash crop revenue enhancer.

In the proposals to the government by the RSPB, they state that a qualified ecologist should be contacted to safely remove any birds caught in the nets. Really? By the time you get through to the sport department after being diverted by their automated exchange you'll be asked 20 questions and told someone will be out to see you within the next few hrs. Whose going to pay for these 5,000 newly trained ecologist to go around freeing up birds and wildlife? Nope.

I'll gently remove the said offender and let them on their merry way if not injured.

The issue needs to be tackled at government and business level, we need to reconsider how we do planning. Economics first isn't the right way forward. It never was.

Plastic, commercial pesticides, household waste, over production of agriculture and livestock are some of the primary causes. These are directly related to lifestyle choices that we in the west make.
