A big bag of pasta

A big bag of potatoes

A bag of vegetables

Tins of tomatoes

Tins of beans

Flour to make bread

As much minced beef that I could afford with the remainder.

I'm well practiced at super cheap yet tasty cooking.

Rice and Pasta, shop after 5pm to see what reduced items are on sale. I would do this every day of that week for the fruit, veg and bakery stuff.

With the amounts you get when you buy, it can last many meals.

You only need 80g of rice per portion. Home brand long grain is just over £1 for 500g

Stock cubes get 10 for 50p

Cream cheese is 80p

Diced chicken is £1.77.

Ration and don't eat it all.

From the local chinese cash and carry I can get loads of 5p instant noodles that are just the best and most spiciest ones I've had, they're imported from china,Japan and South korea.

I can buy loads of aloe Vera drinks for 10p each.

Bags of prawn crackers that we make ourselves for £1 you get a massive bag that's equivalent to about 20 bags of prawn crackers from a takeaway.

They have packs of bacon 20 for a £1

Jars of Jalapeños for 50p

Olives for 50p

Pork scratchings 10p each

Basically £10 can fill the cupboards

I've done this before, some years ago Mr See.

Packet noodles, you can get 5 pack for a quid.

Tinned value beans, probably four cans for a quid.

Big bag of porridge oats.

Big bag lentils.

Cheap veg, whatevers on special/ reduced. Definitely onions and garlic.

Own brand pasta.

Tinned toms.

A cheap loaf but decent butter.

Box of teabags.

Chilli sauce, curry powder.

Done.

I’ve had periods in my life where I had to choose between buying a loaf of bread for myself or a tin of cat food for the rabble. It’s not easy surviving on next to no money but if you have some imagination and basic cooking skills it can be done. It’s definitely easier if you have basic store cupboard essentials like herbs and spices though.

Even though money is not an issue for us now I still shop and cook quite frugally most of the time. I never buy anything ready made, always cook from scratch.

Feeding a family on very little is a necessity for many and the ability to cook from scratch makes a big difference.

I could probably feed a family of 4 or 5 people, 3 meals a day including a Sunday roast and pudding for not much more than £20. Feeding just myself for a tenner is easy

Central

Porridge - borrowed from others - great breakfast and snacks.

Pasta. Tinned tomatoes. Herbs from my garden. Variety of pulses. Cheap cabbage and assorted veg. Couple of onions. Extra value bread - freeze some for toast later in the week. Bits of various made into soup.

Staple ingredients served with some variety and repetition. Whilst shopping also would look for clearance discounts, sell by date expiry and including market stall veg towards end of the day.

Milk if there's spare cash.

Hiding in the shadows

A decade ago, all I had was £10 a week to feed 3 kids & myself

Big bag of oats under a £1.

Huge bag of pasta cost about £3.

20.00hrs every evening my local Coop puts all the reductions out.

I'd buy whatever was going.

We ate some bloody odd meals back then!
