What is a gentleman?

Fabsteroos,

Been musing again!

I had a discussion with a non fab member this week about their idea of what a gentleman is......we could not agree!

My idea of one is when they open doors for a lady, use manners, no swearing, ensure they put us in a taxi home....that kind of thing!

My friend says why do women need looking after like that...?

Thoughts please ?

A gentleman would do all those things with respect to any sex

And a gentleman can most definitely fucking swear when its appropriate

There seem to be many definitions and criteria that can determine a gentleman, but what makes a woman a "lady"?

Someone who checks I'm ok after he's facefucked me/spaffed.

Being slightly more serious; I'd agree with your friend. I like men swearing, I find it shows they are relaxed and comfortable around me. Not putting a facade on. A gentleman to me would be someone who demonstrates respect. But that's really bloody wishy washy. I don't know. I can easily explain actions some have done that show me they are but it's such a personal, subjective term.

I think both a gentleman and a lady are people who are respectful and well mannered as the situation dictates.

Camberley occasionally doncaster

I don't think there is a definitive list. There is always gentlemanly behaviour.

A gentleman always deals with a lady as an ideal paragon, rather than someone with flaws. He is not necessarily protecting her, he is just trying to prove himself worthy of her affections.

For gentlemanly behaviour I would add the following:

Always takes the side of the pavement nearest the road.

Saying a thing equates to doing the same.

Integrity.

Not requiring obfuscation in their language and dealings. A compliment is a compliment..

A gentleman is clean, well mannered, well dressed and well spoken. Probably over 40, he'd also be would be well travelled and had spent at least one night in a brothel.

It's not exclusive a gesture towards ladies, it's good manners and a pleasant demeanor.

Gentleman? Polite, kind, considerate, compassionate and willing to help and be there.

That whole door opening thing fir women? Crikey, I know someone who held a door open for a lady who berated him for being old fashioned and a dinosaur. I hold doors open for people to be polite, not because I think women can't manage without me.

I quite like this part and would agree with that.

Perhaps I'm being really quite stupid (incredibly likely) but do you actually mean a gentleman treats a lady as a flawless, perfect being? Regardless of flaws?

Where it's done for everyone, it's fine. When it's only done to women (particularly when a big fuss is made), it does feel either sexist or like some sort "good guy" performance.

Chippenham Malmesbury area

We as a society should be striving to achieve total equality between the sexes, the term gentleman should be considered outdated; it enforces the belief that men are different than ladies, better even and how grateful a woman should feel if this superior being pays for their meal or opens a door for them or, even stands up when they enter a room. This term should be replaced with Gentle Person and we can all show respect and towards each other.

Every time I hear a woman on First Dates complaining that her male date didn't offer to pay for them when they didn't offer to pay for him, I think it's no wonder full equality between the sexes in this country hasn't been achieved.

Im a traditionalist as a gentleman, always hold doors, give up my seat ect. Most woman like this, ive had one girl recently snap at me saying i can open the door myself. She was 20ish facial pearcings and looked like a corbyn loving protester. I said suit yourself and carried on with my day... unscathed

What bugs me is when people dont say thankyou.

Fair point but if you look at that from perspective

Man rules the world but woman rules the man

Therefore who accualy rules the world?

Don't get me wrong I think for the same job or task both sexes should be rewarded equally but there are some jobs or tasks more suitable for one sex or the other, obviously there are exceptions

Thomas Crown Affair,

Steve McQueen gives a very good performance of a gentleman in the popular sense of the term

Also it’s something that you are taught, it’s not something that just happen over night

Hence the term...manners maketh the man!

I am obviously old fashioned in my thinking....

I find it a huge turn on when guys hold a door open for me.

One guy I met rushed around the side of his car to open the door for me. He wouldn't let me pay for any of my drinks either and even held his arm out for me to walk with him.

I was taught that manners cost nothing.

I enjoy being treated like a lady. In the words of Aretha Franklin.... R. E. S. P. E. C. T

It is definitely about respect and if a guy was to treat me like that I would feel really special and would treat him in the same way

Of course every gentleman should have a little deviance inside too

Being a gentleman is an attitude towards others that usually involved a charismatic individual so polite, responsibility, a charmer, respect and tactile person.

Also someone with a good social cue, opening doors is just being polite regardless of gender but can also be romantic depending on the relationship. Being a gentleman is having a characteristic that is appreciated by others like myself

So what does being a lady entail? You need a courtesy lady in other to be a true gentleman. Ying and Yang thing affectionate, loving, knowing when to let the man be a man...
