No hint of an offensive tweet from him when the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge s children were born.

Why is that I wonder...

It's not funny in the slightest. It's very offensive the kind of thing that people have worked tirelessly to stamp out for many years. As someone in the public eye he is called upon to show a good example in matters like this. He should have kept his trap shut and engaged his brain cell. Yes he deserves to be sacked, definitely x

I used to enjoy his 5 live show, but he was starting to grate on me a bit. He’d have a really interesting guest on, only to end up spoiling the interview talking about himself, or constantly interrupting the person. However I will miss the sausage sandwich game (I’m no sauce).

But I cannot and won’t defend his tweet, he regularly trots out a game show called ‘Chimps dressed as famous people’ but that’s not relevant here, this child isn’t a famous person in history or in fiction so that’s no defence.

I think he’s sent it as a joke and the fact that he cannot see the underlying racism is disturbing and disgusting.

The joke wasnt comparing race to chimps, it was comparing celebrity children to circus animals because they're paraded around in fancy outfits in front of people.

But as I said, I get the racist side, it wasnt a very well thought out joke and someone in his position should have known better

That actually makes sense, hadn't thought of it as that.

The royals don't do photo shoots often though.

Katie Price, The Kardashians etc are more circus animal types.

If his point was that he did it because of the "media circus", it seems a bit strange that he chose the royal family as an example, as Prince William has made a point of protecting his children from the media and this was Prince Harrys and Meghans first time with their new baby facing the media and public

It's really interesting to see the comments on here.

Do I find the photo offensive? No, it's a funny picture. Do I find it offensive given the context? Now that's a different question and clearly the context is everything. I'm not the "target" so I dont feel entitled to be offended, but I do find it wholly inappropriate and not funny. And I'm astounded that he didn't think that it was going to be considered offensive.

The only person who really knows what he intended is Danny Baker himself. Do I think he is racist? I dont know him but before today had no reason to think he was. His actions are at a minimum, bloody stupid. Ignorance isn't an excuse, everyone has an obligation to be aware of the acceptable bounds of communication and behaviour.

That was my thought, too. He had three chances (two, if we're only counting the boys) to tweet a picture of a 'posh little fella' that happens to be a chimpanzee.

I'm really quite saddened that his bias came through in this way and that his non-apology at the time was that only those with 'diseased minds' see it as racist.

We have had decades of people of colour being compared to chimps/monkeys etc. Just because it has been used often doesn't mean that it isn't racist. If people are ignorant of the connotations then they truly are blind to the world around them. They have managed to live in a bubble where monkey noises have never been made to people of colour, or seen the images used to depict people of colour or even the fact that some AI has been designed in a such a way as to not recognise black skin colour so it sees apes or doesn't recognise the skin at all.

Baker grew up in London. He's not that much older than me. He will have seen the behaviours I describe in Bermondsey because it was not uncommon.

Baker was a chump for doing it. Not a chimp. I can see the point he was making. I am not a royalist and I am cynical about their attempts to diversify. I couldn't care if they were all black, gay or disabled. We do not need a royal family. But white liberal outrage on behalf of others has become pathetic. Baker should have been cautioned and not sacked.

"i am a huge danny baker radio fan....

the problem is that if didn't know anything the "chimps in suits" is a popular danny baker radio show trope..... chimps on a segeway.... chimps doing impressions ect ect ect....

the issue is that to the outside in this "context" it looks absolutely awful...

I (he) didn't know that and that changes the context somewhat, however, he really should know better. It's an awful tweet and I find it really difficult to accept even given that information and what he's said in response that he hasn't used it unintentionally. He's a smart guy, a thinking man, so that is how I'm going to 'judge' him. If it's truly an oversight then good God, he's going to pay big time, in the pocket that is.

a smart guy or thinking man would have realised the implications of his "joke" from the outset"

And it's exactly that I can't get my head around. It just can't be in my mind what it appears to be.

Regardless of whether people do/ don’t like it, someone in his position should have known better.

Things like that can be bad enough being shown between mates in a pub, but when presented on social media by a well-known media personality... what does he expect?

"Baker was a chump for doing it. "

What point was he making?

Whilst the photo could have making the racist joke, if the intention behind was not about race then I don’t feel he should have got in trouble. He’s being branded a racist when he may not have intended it in that way at all. I genuinely don’t believe anyone in his position at the bbc is stupid enough to deliberately post something with racist intent. I do believe he may post something that some will see as racist but not realising it at the point of posting. Was it foolish ... yes ... was it sackable not really.

Labelling everything a joke and anyone feeling offended a snowflake takes us right back to the good old '70s and '80s. I'll just give a big watermelon smile, be happy with people checking whether my colour comes off and tastes like chocolate or shit and telling me how well I speak for a foreigner.

Me? No, this is exactly what I went through in the '70s and early '80s. People touching my hair to see if my curls were prickly or if it felt like 'real hair' - something said to me.

I'm PC for a very good reason - I remember what it was like when white people thought it was just fine to treat people like me like that. You might think I'm a snowflake (a beautiful unique thing) and use the word in a derogatory way but I'm not melting. Get enough of us together and we stop the country from functioning, but the kids have a blast and a day off school.

As it happens I totally believe Danny Baker that it wasn't intended as a racist slur at all, and was in fact aimed at the monarchy and the class system.

He has consistently attacked the Monarchy for a number of years and this time, rightly or wrongly, it has bit him on the arse because he didn't think through the full connotations of what he was publishing. Sorry, but this man has responsibilities as a public broadcaster and should never of been stupid enough to put himself in this position.

He was clearly being rascist and I commend the BBC for firing him. He was in a position of influence and abused it. If he had been in any other career and brought his company into disrepute to this degree then he would be fired as well.

What saddens me is his weasely attempts to pretend he ‘didn’t mean it’.

"Its a bit persumtious to assume everyone knew

You are right, it is presumptuous to assume everyone knew that it was Harry and Meghans child.

However he has openly said that he knew it was a Royal birth, and I'm not sure many others are expected around now.

To be fair I didnt know she was expecting until today

You wouldn't if you don't read papers or watch the news

Exactly - stopped watching/ reading the news a couple years ago - better off for it

You must live in a bubble"

Not really - we google the things we want to know

Honestly dont care whos pregnant or which mp spent £6.50 on a goldfish

That’s a bit ott

Yes okay maybe it was, but at the very least Twitter should be heavily fined for allowing it to happen. On the same note, the BBC should cough up a few Million, as they were his employer.

But videos of people being murdered and beheaded are ok? Lol"

No not okay and I don't think I suggested otherwise. All I am saying is that others should also be held to account.

Then isn't it a good job that you aren't a journalist and National radio DJ, because then you would be expected to be aware of emerging International news, especially emerging International news that you have had six months notice about!

The BBC should take responsibility for what it's employees say. Twitter should take responsibility for what is posted on their site.

Totally agree that he is responsible for his own actions and therefore should accept whatever might come his way.

However, the BBC are not necessarily at fault. Firstly, it was not a BBC twitter account. Secondly, most presenters like Danny are not directly hired by the BBC, they are hired by the production company. So sub-sub-contractors really.

I am guessing that the BBC run Diversity Training for all its staff, whether contracted or not. But I will accept your knowledge on this and blame the Production Company for lack of training.

But Danny Baker is just one of a number of people who've been projected into a broadcasting role due to personality rather than specific expertise and fail.

Shades of Russell Brand and Jonathon Ross and their puerile behaviour.

The Royal baby is just a few days old and we already have racist tropes in the media. Ignorance is no defence.

Sadly I fear it’s just the beginning of what this family will face in spite of the protections afforded by the privileged position they hold in society.
