Someone vaguely similar probably existed, there was a big end of the world movement in that part of the world at the time, subversion against the Romans etc. Various stories of various preachers. Some embellishment and falsification. A following develops. This explodes, eventually, within the Roman Empire. The Romans try to nail down the "truth" and in doing so vandalise and destroy records not in keeping with their political and social motivations.
Various translations and other thinking, particularly Platonic and Aristotelean philosophy, influence interpretation over time, and messages are given priority or suppressed given social and moral fashion over centuries.
Is my semi educated guess. "That's not a million miles away from it, yes. Personally I have a huge issue with organised religion and how a person's 'faith' is primarily a means for the church to control them and further their own wealth and ends. Any organisation that tells a person "you should" or "you must" on a daily/hourly basis deserves to be examined very very closely. | |||
