Neck and shoulder pain

I woke up yesterday in pain and thought I must have slept in an awkward position - I have had similar pain and it went away after a day.

I woke up today and it's even worse

Ibuprofen isn't touching it.

I thought it's maybe a trapped nerve - it hurts / burns to move in certain directions and hurts sitting still

Has anyone had similar and what did you do?

I live with that on a daily basis I bear with throughout the day. Have a herbal remedy in the evening.

Sounds like a trapped nerve to me. I've had them in the past (sciatica), so I feel you pain. I've had kidney stones in the past... but the sciatica was more painful (at it's worst). I see a chiropractor regularly now, and that seems to have fixed it.

You could try a hot soak if its muscular but if its nerves only a professional should be touching it and manipulating it. Best advice is to get professional advice

In the short term, I've found that a brisk walk on level firm ground helps a lot.

Also, I swear by regular Chiropractor check-ups and maintenance. If you're prepared to spend over 200 pounds per year to keep a car road legal, why not spend half of that to help yourself keep fit and well?

I tend to bear it for a while, do some exercises to see if that helps before ending up at the osteopath. The latter usually provides instant relief....

A good massage and lots of stretching usually does it for me.

I'm going to see how it is in the morning and then find an osteopath - good idea thank you x

I can't live like this it's making me feel bloody awful

Mine is caused by osteoarthritis in my neck. I have amitriptyline for it, which is a muscle relaxant, but they make me very tired the next day.

I would see a GP about it if it persists.

Birmingham/Paisley

Like the others go to a Chiropractor or osteopath. The other route would be acupuncture, but I think mechanical manipulation is more likely to work.

Good luck!

I have this from time to time, usually caused by sleeping awkwardly. When I had it really badly I went to a physio, thankfully we have them in work FOC. The physio was absolutely fantastic, checked all my range of movement etc, including placing her hand against my head to restrict movements etc. After a good 10-15 check over, she gave me a deep tissue massage and a sheet of exercises to carry out.

It's exacerbated by weak muscles, not solely by sleeping awkwardly.

I have had it for a year.

Over the counter pain relief did not touch it. Cocodamol and then Tramadol only brought short relief.

For me it is like having 4 walls of pain surrounding you creating white noise in your brain.

I took amyltripilene at night once, the next day I was dozy and slept half the day, I did not use it again. I am now on pregablin which works for me.

I found a sports massage reduced the pain by half and regular massage, physio and medication keep it in check. Initially I was having to do the massage weekly. Now I do it monthly on a maintenance basis. I agree with the car maintenance and the physio comments made above.

Good luck

I have something similar, thought it was due to a herniated disc in my neck, having had similar symptoms before and having a disc removed but after seeing a consultant 3 weeks ago, he has diagnosed me with frozen shoulder, pain radiates around neck and shoulder joint and sometimes causes earache too and a very cold feeling in shoulder, just awaiting physio to see if that helps, if not, steroid injections could be next.

rotherham

Try one of those shoulder neck bean bags that you warm in the microwave to ease the pain

Might help but I’d still visit someone for advice

Good luck

Flitwick and Fakenham

I have frequent shoulder and neck pain. Caused by rotator cuff problem....supraspinatus tendons etc.

Get a theraband and find the exercises for rotator cuff tendinitis on line, they absolutely help.

Pain killers just mask the cause so long term are not great!

Good luck x

I find that most pains are immeasurably improved by cutting one thing out of my life for a few days/ as long as possible...

Work.

Yes I agree - an osteopath or chiropractor will be worth the money - and I don't have a car so the money I saved I will use for keeping myself on the road

I can't really afford it - but I'm not sure the NHS give referrals for a osteopath?

It's so bizarre - I have just had a hot shower and it felt better - and now I've sat down the pain has started again

I really have too much to do to have this bollocks slowing me down!

And I'm having a wisdom tooth out on Monday

"I have just had a hot shower and it felt better - and now I've sat down the pain has started again "

Try alternating between heat and cold treatment.

10 mins with a hot water bottle, gentley stretch for 5 mins then 10 mins with an ice pack.

You can find stretching techniques online and keep doing them every few hours.

Rest is the main cure I always find.

A little effort and time consuming , and different things work for different people . The hot and cold technique work for me , there’s a few ways .

If you are lucky enough to have two baths , or a bath and plenty of ice and an old dustbin . Full bath with hot water , jump in submerge injured area for 45 seconds , then jump in freezing cold ice ,submerge 45 seconds ... repeat as much as you can .

Alternatively , fill a balloon full of water and freeze , use this against affected area 45 seconds pressure , then apply warm for 45 seconds ( this can be a hot water bottle or hair drier ) again keep repeating .

Again it’s effort , but for me - effort pays off ,

Good luck

I'm going to try this now - there is no time for resting

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I've had neck and shoulder pain for nearly 18 months. My neck is crumbling and the nerve is being aggravated as it moves across crumbly bone.

The osteopath helped a bit but I've been having physio since January. I've also changed my mattress and took a month off work.

Go and get it checked in case you need a referral.

If you can get to London Bridge, book an appointment at the London School of Osteopathy. You get treatment from a student, but under guidance, and about half price.

Thanks for that x

But getting to London would cost the same price a an appointment in my home town.

I took some Valerian Herb with a glass of wine lol.

I feel a bit better.

I'm dreading going to bed though
