I often wonder why in life some people are considered more beautiful than others. In terms of physical appearance what do you consider to be beautiful when looking at a face?

The terms conventionally attractive and unconventionally attractive are sometimes used, but what do they actually mean? I've been called unconventionally attractive on more than one occasion, and I was unsure how to take it. Whilst I don't want to look like everyone else, is the term unconventionally attractive just a polite way of saying " bot attractive to most people?"

I will make it clear that it's what's on the inside that really matters but on this site physical attraction does play a big part. I often wonder if I'm attracted to stereotypically physically attractive people, but what is actually stereotypically attractive?

Lots of important questions here, i know!

There are a whole load of things we are naturally drawn to like facial symmetry/feature proportion. They tend to be the type of people who are pleasant to look at, they please our brains because they like order.

Unconventional beauty are those we are attracted to who don't fit those norms.

I agree about the asymmetry and proportion; they seem to be brought up a lot in studies.

I guess being told I'm unconventionally beautiful is their way of saying I look like an alien! I'm taking it as that anyway. It was meant well but i'm not the best person to use the term with.

I don't think there is a set 'beautiful' face, I can be attracted to a variety of women who look vastly different from each other so can't really say there is a specific beautiful face.

As for physical attraction I think it's equally as important here as it is outside of the site. Sure what's inside matters most but I wouldn't make compromises.

Beauty is subjective.

Yes there are “conventionally attractive” people, however that doesn’t mean those who don’t fit that stereotype aren’t attractive, society has influenced pekoe & their expectations in regards to a lot of things.

Most other women seem to melt over Tom Hardy but he does nothing for me.

Do you have a certain type you like OP?

There are a certain balance of features that are considered classically beautiful, as Rubi said, based around symmetry and proportion. It is also possible to not have that balance of features yet still be beautiful, that is unconventionally beautiful. I think that you're taking an insult or derogatory term from something that is a descriptive term for beauty.

We all have different ideas of what is attractive I think.

I certainly don't think I'm what most people would consider to be beautiful...but some do, that's enough for me

No idea really, it’s an individual thing.

Personally I’ve never been drawn to handsomeness. More someone’s sexiness. And very handsome men tend to leave me cold. I like a face with character and kind sparkly eyes, that’s what i find attractive. And 99% of the time i’m drawn to brunette men.

Paul Kaye is my idea of a dreamboat.

You only need to google the most beautiful women or men in the world to see that your beauty might not be my beauty , everyone likes different things there’s something for everyone . Confidence is the key , people will be drawn to you if you are happy , confidant and have a positive outlook on life .

a lot of so called celebrity beauties have issues with self image..noses too big .. don't like eyes etc ..I think true beauty is described in 'something' by the Beatles..where it is the reaction from the beholder that defines how they feel.. there's far more to attraction than just what is deemed to be a pretty face..a smile is always going to be attractive

A lot of this depends on the culture and current social norms. For instance shapely calves were deemed highly attractive in men during the 15th and 16th century as was deathly pale skin for women. It was also deemed more attractive for women to carry more weight that is currently accepted, presumably to do with appearing better nourished. In todays world it's deemed to be attractive to have highly tanned skin, not something I can relate to.

It's so subjective I've no idea how I would describe beautiful in any one way.

If you lined my exs up there would be nothing physically in common.. for me it's very much a slightly quirky face but something magical that shines out of it.

I'd take that as a complement Molly

A lot of this is personal taste, I might find someone physically beautiful but not be attracted to them. My ideas have changed with time and experience so now it’s less about the aesthetics. X

I think two things define beauty.

1. The people that are in the media (tv, music, models etc). at the time. People that share features with whatever the current fashionable look is. will be considered beautiful.

2. Signs of health and good genes. Women with wide hips and slim bodies. Big boobs. Plump lips. Symmetrical faces. Good skin. Beautiful eyes.... these can all be signs of fertility and good genes and we subconsciously fall for that. Of course it’s all relative - as humans we’re looking for someone that’s at least equal or hotter. So one persons view of what’s attractive also depends on their subconscious view of themselves.

I think each sees beauty in another in different ways, otherwise we would all seek the same things in another....

Me, I think I'm in that unconventional camp.....

"Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder."

..and how many they had.

But on a serious note, agree that it is subjective and that is comforting because everybody has the chance of being beautiful to one or another.

"Symmetric is naturally more attractive then asymmetric, rest seem to be personal preference xx"

But we're all naturally asymmetric to a degree. I've seen photoshopped portraits of people in a documentary where they've been made symmetric and they looked a little odd.

I would have thought that conventional beauty is more pleasing in features to the masses.

Unconventional means that they are more likely to have a unique quality of beauty to the eye of beholder
