Any Fab Jazz fans?

Was watching Jazz 625 earlier and man it was cool

I’m a big fan of Miles and ‘Trane plus Bird and Oscar Peterson. Anyone else into it?

Can I ask a jazz fan a question?

Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin). Is it jazz or classical?

I love that piece but to me it’s something that occupies the middle ground, an early example of fusion.

Every time I listen to it I decide it’s jazz. Then the next time I’m convinced it’s classical! Superb piece!

Gershwin was a genius. I don’t care if it’s jazz or classical, it’s a sublime piece.

Many different types of jazz. I was introduced to trad and New Orleans jazz by my dad, still love George Lewis, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Count Basie, Duke Ellington... Blues singers such as Bessie Smith and Lizzie Miles.

Later I discovered more modern jazz such as Miles Davis, Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and also grew fond of jazz-rock fusion.

I'm lucky enough to have a jazz/blues club down the road. Saw a great fusion band "Flying Machines" last month.

That club sounds great. I used to frequent a club which held a jazz night on a Thursday. Saw a cat called Andy Hamilton who was so cool, he used to be Errol Flynn’s bandleader. He died a few years ago but if you get the chance listen to Silvershine, it’s a beautiful piece.

I recorded a few when they repeated them in the early 90s

The club is in Luton town centre. Also seen the Adrian Cox quartet perform New Orleans style jazz and Wild Card who were pretty amazing including a jazz rendition of Radiohead's Exit Music (For a Film).

Rhapsody in Blue is wonderful but surely is written on paper. Jazz would usually involve improvisation on a given theme. I doubt any two renditions Ellington made of Caravan sound the same.

Yes but it’s also how the listener interprets it too.

True. Its a grey area. Rhapsody in Blue is certainly influenced by jazz.

There’s no grey area, it is what you want it to be.

No idea, but as an aside I saw a youth orchestra performing a very impressive version in Winchester Cathedral last week , and their interpretation I would definitely put in the classical sphere
