Sorry about balls up earlier. Forget that other thread, it was a phony. Let's do this properly.

I've not been here all that long myself so it's hard to differentiate Lurkers from Forumites from Old Sweats.

The point of this thread is to prove we're NOT "The Clique".

Other than that, what you decide to teach is up to you. Lurkers, if you're Mentor does a good job, be sure to thank them.

I will allocate Lurker to Mentor. To avoid inundated inboxes. By the end of the evening, you should have your very new, shiny partnership. I wish you luck.

Forgive me if I’m wrong but surely all this thread will do is create a (temporary) enlarged clique, until the forumites forget their role and the lurkers find out that new blood isn’t really welcomed after all.

As someone who comments occasionally and attends the Manchester Lounge Socials I’ve been told that my inactivity on the forums really gives me no right to attend the Socials. If that’s not a clique then tell me what is.

I need to stress here that this view is not represented by the organisers fortunately and hasn’t detracted from the event.

Will I continue to be an occasional poster - probably. Do I care that I’m not in the clique - yeah sometimes, but I have neither the time or inclination to progress to forumite. Would I miss the forums if I left Fab - absolutely not. I think they’re toxic and ego massaging but most of all cliquey.

I'm sorry that these are your feelings about the forums and the people in general, I can't and won't deny your reactions as they're yours. I will say though that not everyone feels the same as you, nor that your conclusions are correct. I do see how you came to them though. Again, I'm sorry to see that you feel like that.

Some people in here beggar belief. New members participating in the forum are its lifeblood. It’s only through new members that it has any chance of refreshing itself and not simply becoming a graveyard for old has-beens like me. I wish those with such toxic views would wake up and stop being so blinkered and obnoxious. Sorry that is the face of the forum you got to see

The thing is.. the Manchester social that "Forumites" Talk about.. Has an L in the Name.. which stands for Lounge. If you don't frequent the Lounge very often.. then I'd wonder why on earth you'd want to attend a Lounge Social. Why not attend the others.

So far there are way more interested Forumites interested in this thread.. than there are Lurkers. Which tells me this whole clique thing is bollocks. You've a long list of some of the more OPEN, WARM, FUNNY, KIND and HONEST members queuing up to help.. because they WANT you to join in.

But not with an attitude you're displaying right now, I suspect.

All that aside.. I'm willing to lend you my advice in private, as part of this thread. I'm a man of my word. How long the relationship lasts depends on chemistry. Act like a knob and I'll drop you like a stone and let you sink. Behave like a gent and we could become real friends. I could introduce you to mine and vice versa.

It's not Fab. Its how you use it.

Well I so wasn't expecting your name on that!?! As someone who everyone knows at socials and literally laughs his way around the room I'm pretty gutted you feel this way about the forums.. maybe it's a prime example of how socialising face to face is a whole different experience than online.. which is sad, when so many mutual friends do both.. if it wasn't for the forums I never would have got to the MLS and made such good friends.. yourself included. Hope you're ok x

"Forgive me if I’m wrong but surely all this thread will do is create a (temporary) enlarged clique, until the forumites forget their role and the lurkers find out that new blood isn’t really welcomed after all.

As someone who comments occasionally and attends the Manchester Lounge Socials I’ve been told that my inactivity on the forums really gives me no right to attend the Socials. If that’s not a clique then tell me what is.

I need to stress here that this view is not represented by the organisers fortunately and hasn’t detracted from the event.

Will I continue to be an occasional poster - probably. Do I care that I’m not in the clique - yeah sometimes, but I have neither the time or inclination to progress to forumite. Would I miss the forums if I left Fab - absolutely not. I think they’re toxic and ego massaging but most of all cliquey.

The thing is.. the Manchester social that "Forumites" Talk about.. Has an L in the Name.. which stands for Lounge. If you don't frequent the Lounge very often.. then I'd wonder why on earth you'd want to attend a Lounge Social. Why not attend the others.

So far there are way more interested Forumites interested in this thread.. than there are Lurkers. Which tells me this whole clique thing is bollocks. You've a long list of some of the more OPEN, WARM, FUNNY, KIND and HONEST members queuing up to help.. because they WANT you to join in.

But not with an attitude you're displaying right now, I suspect.

All that aside.. I'm willing to lend you my advice in private, as part of this thread. I'm a man of my word. How long the relationship lasts depends on chemistry. Act like a knob and I'll drop you like a stone and let you sink. Behave like a gent and we could become real friends. I could introduce you to mine and vice versa.

Apologies for the late reply but I have been giving great consideration to what to say in reply to the OP’s patronising offer of advice. I don’t want anyone to think I acted impulsively in my reply.

The more I think about it the more I come to the ironic conclusion that I began attending the Lounge Socials because I was interested to meet those who didn’t reply or engage with an occasional forum poster. And guess what - I found a whole group of wonderfully warm and friendly people, some of whom I genuinely call friends in this world. As a result I’ve had some amazing meets, weekends away and seen places I didn’t even know existed, and for that my experience here has been on the whole a positive one.

I have fully embraced the advice I’ve received over the years yet remain aware that my real life personality, interests, appearance and existence by far outweigh my Fab persona. The more I think about it the more I feel sure this is how things should be.

Tonight I’ve received more correspondence than ever before in such a short window - some from strangers thanking me for having the balls to stand up to the clique and for portraying how the forums are in reality to the vast majority of users, whilst others from people I have met / know / have chatted to over the years questioning my earlier unlike me outburst.

To those I would like to say thank you for making the effort to get in touch, and yes I am still completely sane. This has been brewing inside me for a very long time and having followed all 3 threads today I simply felt compelled to interject.

I am totally aware that I may have burnt a number of bridges today but if it makes some people question their forum behaviour and interactions then it may have served some good.

For the immediate future, I’ll still be sticking around but will only use the forums in connection to any events I am attending. I’ll leave your clique to it, clearly it was never meant to be.....

The MLS is a friendly group.

People on the forums asking for help are told to attend socials. Yet when they do try they're either barred for not being verified or made to feel very unwelcome. General observation about social events around the country.
