So a large fast food company introduced a part straw, replacing their original plastic straw. Thus better for the environment...

I say ok, what about the plastic lid used on every one of its drinks they sell??

Surely this makes it a pointless exercise ?

1) it’s not that environmentally friendly to produce

2) would be far too expensive

I think your missing the point, yes we are all adults here but one of the things of going into a fast food restaurant is so you can general drink and go, walking along with the lid off creates all kinds of problems lol.

Yes it’s a straw and yes we should just get over it but when they are still using so much plastic for everything else, why not change that instead of straws that do actually go soggy after about five mins and I don’t want to drink my drink without the lid on.

annoys the hell out of me that so many places are using paper straws exclusively. I am now having to carry around plastic ones in my bag. Or remember to take a hard plastic one..

They should still be available to those that struggle with paper ones. ( like quite a few disabled people)

Yeah that’s the ones I’m considering getting. Gonna wait until I’m not pregnant, I won’t be getting d*unk on nights out and therefore am sober and won’t spill my drink trying to get it to my mouth

Hi he lids are going in 6 months time, they’re being replace with a polystyrene time lid that’s already made with 40 recycled materials they’re also looking into using the same materials for replacing the straws too due to the many complaints they’ve received but it’s early in development

All retailers should keep a stock of plastic straws solely for disabled people. Paper straws are often unsuitable for them to use.

The problem with paper straws is that you can’t get a good angle to strawpedo a drink with them, thus taking it longer for the uni students to reach the appropriate buzz to complain that they haven’t spent any time studying and are going to fail their course!! Won’t somebody think of the students???

The plastic straw thing is a smokescreen and load of bollocks.

Make people think they're doing something for the planet when really in the grand scheme of things its fuck all.

Paper straws need trees to be cut down, paper to be bleached and dyed, all those chemicals and all that waste released back into the water. That's hardly great for the environment either.

We all need to consume less, not just consume differently.

I carry hard plastic ones as my Autistic step daughter won’t use them. Her Autism is sensory so she doesn’t like how they feel or taste

I did get served with a metal straw somewhere, can't remember where, but it isn't easy to check whether it is 316 stainless or not. Maybe I should see if I can find a way to get some made for work somehow.

There is an argument that energy needed to gather, transport and process plastic alternatives will have a far big carbon impact than plastic. So I'm not convinced replacing disposable plastic with other materials is that great for the environment anyways, just harms it more in a different way.

Good point on the lids. I don't have the answer for a great alternative. Of course the real fix is to stop over consumption and using wasteful disposable things. Because even in a dream world where these items were 100% recyclable we would still need loads of energy to dispose, transport and recycle.

Not easy to check at all, as I said. Unless it comes labelled as pharmaceutical grade. I don't believe it comes with any special stamp to identify as 316 grade but going to check.

However every little helps in my opinion.

I hate paper straws but am happy to use them instead of plastic. I also have my own stainless steel straws I got off Amazon which I love!

I leave one in my bag! Just incase!

I had a paper straw for the first time last week, I found it to work fine, in fact it was more girthy (see what I did there? ) than the plastic ones so my milkshake disappeared in record time.

Someone mentioned lids, I do believe we need lids for use in cars to prevent spillage and burns, thought I think a lid made of the same stuff the cup is made of could be designed.

However how recyclable plastic cover cardboard is I have no idea.

I have 2 kids and therefore probably need those plastic lids (there ARE alternatives available) but the dispenser they have is horrific, there were at least 20 torn useless plastic lids where people has discarded them to get a new one..... And still plastic straws

I suppose depends on how quick one guzzles down the smoothies. I've found I've need to use two or 3 before finishing as they all end in a mush unable to suck up anything.

I am seriously concerned about the amount of plastic pollution we humans are creating..

I have scuba dived for 30 years now and in that time thre has been a massive increase in the amount of plastics seen in the water..

Plastic bags are probably the biggest polluter, polythene is so common that you will see it snagged on most reefs, outcrops or just laying on the sea floor.

Thats not even considering the micro plastic particles that are poisoning the underwater eco system that come from thin sheet plastic and polythene.

Getting rid of straws is a positive move (maybe not when you try and drink a Maccy D's milkshake) but its not where the problem is..

Plastic bags need to go completely, replace them with paper of hemp bags for life.

Replace plastic rubbish bags rubbish bins like we used to have.

And as for recycling, a common practice for recycling needs ro be employed across the UK rather than the half arsed approach we currently have.

They're fine for soft drinks, but just collapse if you try to drink a McDonalds milkshake with one... and the milkshakes are too thick to drink easily from the cup.

Needs to be mandatory use of a personal reusable no-spill mug for take away drinks. Outlet should sell the mug for a non-trivial cost (£1? £2?) for the first time purchaser, no charge when customer comes back next time with their (hopefully washed out) mug.

Eat in customers should get a proper cup that the establishment washes and reuses.

Repeat across all types of takeaway, for mugs, food containers, cutlery. Aim for a zero waste takeaway culture.

Follow up would be to target supermarket packaging, in particular ready meals. This could be more difficult. And yes i am an offender on this count. Pre-packaged food is a symptom of our rush-rush culture, over work, insufficient time for home cooking etc. Just banning ready meal packaging would not work, it needs a change in culture for how this type of food is made and sold.

20 years ago you didn't see people clutching coffee cups and/or bottles of water everywhere they went and that generation is still doing ok. Why do 21st century people feel the need to do this? Drink tap water at home before you leave, or at work when you get there - same for coffee or tea and use a re-usable mug or glass.

I have a reusable coffee cup made from bamboo, with a silicone lid to stop spills. Pretty sure it works with cold drinks too. Maybe fast food chains should do the same as coffee shops

I have a travel cup, for driving.

I drink a lot of coffee on motorways, won't use the disposable cups, I never have.

Since we've switched to paper straws at the bar, a lot of regulars have bought themselves, solid reusable plastic straws as they don't like the paper ones.

One of our old dears has mild Parkinsons, her hands shake so she can't always pick her glass up easily.

She's got one of those curly wurly straws now, she is a legend!

If you could only recycle paper, but not cardboard, would you not bother because that was a pointless exercise too?

Presumably these things can’t just change overnight, but it’s still probably worth doing.

I agree about just getting rid of the lids altogether though.

That's just increasing stealth taxes. It's not got rid of plastic bags, it has reduced them. They don't just charge for plastic bags, paper carrier bags are charged for too in most places now.

The solution isn't charging the end user but the supplier/ manufacturers. This would create the incentive to provide bio degradable packaging. But the government is run by those in CEO positions in industry so it won't do that as it'll cause share to drop as profits drop.

The answer probably lies with the masses responding by not buying any products contained in plastic packaging. The industry would very swiftly move from plastic!

I’m confused. Is the government trying to make us all a bit more environmentally friendly to impose green / stealth taxes on us....

Or is the government happy for us not to more environmentally because it doesn’t want to piss off big business?

Don’t get me wrong, the government is utter shit in more ways than I can count, but that sounds like a bit of a contradiction.

Got one of these paper straws recently... With a thick milkshake. So after 5 minutes of trying to suck the milkshake through the straw and the end of the straw had all deformed and was just stuck together and almost sealed... I obviously understand why the removal of the straws but as previously said the lids still plastic and the cardboard straw just wasn't up to scratch.. ended up just taking the lid off x

I am seriously concerned about the amount of plastic pollution we humans are creating..

I have scuba dived for 30 years now and in that time thre has been a massive increase in the amount of plastics seen in the water..

Plastic bags are probably the biggest polluter, polythene is so common that you will see it snagged on most reefs, outcrops or just laying on the sea floor.

Thats not even considering the micro plastic particles that are poisoning the underwater eco system that come from thin sheet plastic and polythene.

Getting rid of straws is a positive move (maybe not when you try and drink a Maccy D's milkshake) but its not where the problem is..

Plastic bags need to go completely, replace them with paper of hemp bags for life.

Replace plastic rubbish bags rubbish bins like we used to have.

And as for recycling, a common practice for recycling needs ro be employed across the UK rather than the half arsed approach we currently have."

It's good mechanical pulp that can be reused about 5 times before the fibres are no longer viable and pass through the paper machine as fines. Paper making is far better for the environment than plastic manufacturing. You know pulp manufacturers grow more trees than they cut down? You know any mill in the UK that uses virgin pulp sources it from pulp mills that grow more than they cut down. You know that bleaching process is oxygen bleaching? You know the chemical byproducts are not dumped into rivers but used by other industries?

I do.

That's what twenty odd years in the paper industry teaches you.

Exactly this. All straws seemed to be paper when I was a kid (apart from blue school-milk ones), and it really wasn’t a problem. People need to get a grip.

Complaining about or too the company in question is irrelevant. Legislation was passed a few weeks ago prohibiting plastic straws (though not the lids which incidentally cost more than the cup and straw combined) so the company has not done it to be green or to annoy customers or to save money they have done it because they have had their hands forced by legislation.
