You shouldn’t leave the bad stuff for appraisals. You should bring them up and talk about them as they happen. That way the appraisal should be a good thing and not one to dread.... that’s what I’ve found

Is he/she a good or a bad boss?

Do you have regular 1 to 1s with them?

The appraisal is a permanent record of your performance - get it in the bag first.

Ask for 1 to 1s and raise it in that forum rather than the appraisal.

ha ha. I think it’s mutual.....agree with all of the comments here; one to ones and keeping calm etc. It’s just that I think appraisals are a pointless exercise especially when we all talk and catch up regularly. Just wasting time ticking the HR box!

Remember that it's permanent record.

If things go bad at work the management will look at them and base redundancy decisions on it.

I disagree; I think you get out what you put in to them - they work brilliantly where I am.

Nothing should come as a surprise in an appraisal.

OP, you say you think it's a waste of time because you already have regular supervisions/catch-ups, but your OP also suggests things aren't good. Your catch-ups aren't working.

If you treat it as a tick box for HR that's all it ever will be.

All the appraisals I had were no more than a box ticking exercise. I asked for and got some useful training but apart from that they were pointless in the organisation I worked for.

Not had an appraisal for years, but when I did it was always over lunch, if I got a pay rise, I would pay, if not then the boss would pick up the tab. Worked well until I became self employed

An appraisal should be a positive interview mapping out where you have achieved your goals and to map out your future with the company
