My Horror Film Ambition

a Primark shoebox in Leicester

I have an ambition… to find a horror film which actually freaks me out… even if it’s just a little bit. I’ll even watch them at night, on my own… they just don’t freak me out no matter how hard I try to let them.

I remember growing up watching Hammer House of Horror… which isn’t scary at all, unless you are about 6 years old and your brother is babysitting you.

I long to have that feeling again.

Like you I was raised on this genre, I watched one last night, nothing too flashy or grotesque but it gave me a shiver or two for a change. It was called Absentia.

I feel the same, the problem is that horror films are all so samey now...they invariably focus on the minutiae of torture to shock and attempt to make you feel ill rather than scare...there are rarely truly scary atmospheric films made any more

Ghosts scare me, Paranormal Activity kind of thing. Slasher type movies don't scare me at all.

Though Hostel was the only torture type film that did unnerve me.

One that had me gripped was called Nightwatch. Holywood remade it with Ewan McGregor but the original Danish version is much creepier

I must confess I find books rather than films scare me more. After I read 'Alien' as a teenager I couldn't sleep.

Hope you like. It made a change to watch a film not entirely given over to CGI and big budgets, the music score itself was enough to get the hair on the back of my neck tingling.

I know what you mean. Last film that got under my skin was Session 9 though perhaps not a horror.

Loved Ringu and The Grudge though my sleep wasn't great after those

The best horrors I've watched was Jaws or Alien tbh. Both of these films had the whole balance without loads of cgi or buckets of blood and the reveal was left till as late as poss. I used to want to hide behind the sofa when just the music was on for Jaws. Recently REC. was pretty good but didn't quite satisfy that adrenaline rush that a good horror can bring.

The only film that made me squeamish was a scene in the japanese thriller "oldboy".

Cant beat the original exorcist but what is freaky the the back story the curse of the movie is legend.

Evil Dead was scary but then again i watched it many years ago. i plan to watch it again and see if it is still scary lol

ive been recommended to watch Psycho2 as it is apparently meant to be quiet scary.

I remember being scared shitless by The Exorcist and The Omen back in the 70's, but they've made me immune now.

I've tried to watch stuff like Halloween and more recently The Blair Witch Project, but I can't get into them.

I've got zero interest now

I still have scary thoughts having seen this film years ago. I won't look in a mirror at midnight, have even been known to close my eyes when passing one.

I'm not a horror fan as such, but love The Devils Rejects. The first film to this was House of a Thousand Corpses, both made by Rob Zombie.

The first, House of a thousand corpses is strange! The second one which follows but can be watched as a seperate film is one of my all time favourites

That's exactly how I felt about it.

The most touching moment for me was when her companion asks her not to go to the boy, she doesn't reply but puts her hand lightly/lovingly on his cheek... in that tiny moment I felt his heart break

I love a good horror only trouble is I have to watch them from behind a pillow because I am a jumper and screamer not good when at pics. Was really looking forward to paranormal activity but was really disappointed as the only bit I jumped and screamed at was the very last bit where the body thrown at camera other than that I sat thinking this has got to get better after all the hype. Fav film is Dog Soldiers can now watch without the pillow after watching the extra bits when I found out they were not real werewolves but men on stilts.

The Woman in Black is amazing at the theatre in London, really atmospheric. I love it. Am going to see it again next month.

I will go see the film, but I have trouble taking Daniel Radcliffe seriously as an actor, I just see him waving a magic wand about!

A Serbian Film made me giggle in places, and shudder in others, not a horror as such, but a little freaky.

Again I struggle with horror, I love them, but have yet to find one that scares me.

I watched an Asian Tartan film the other week The Doll Master, which was quite freaky, considering I really dislike dolls, and can't sleep in the same room as one. But didn't actually scare me!

One film disturbs me, and that is The Freaks, very creepy, however, not scary.

If I were to look for scary films, I would be inclined to look towards old Japanese masters.

Can't remember what they were called, however, they scared the sh1t out of me!

Sounds like there's a few horror buffs amongst us.

Mrs FJ not too keen though.

I remember watching The Exorcist with my dear Mother around the age of 8 which paved the way. Maybe not the responsible thing she's done though eh.

Faves include The Burning, Friday 13th I & II, Amityville,Salems Lot for the jump factor.

I agree not many around in recent years so cannot advise OP but will watch this thread with interest.

The gory stuff I don,t find scary more disturbing the lengths people will go to in the name of entertainment.

Hostel was very good though but the Saw films a bit too far.

Always preferred eerie films and looking forward to The Woman In Black.

The Others is an outstanding film, great story and sends shivers in parts. Perhaps a bit slow for some but one of my all time favourites.

If you like being scared perhaps look into urban exploring where groups visit derelict sites, historical places, graveyards etc.

I visited an old mental asylum in North Wales a few times. That place would test anyone. A group of friends went on another occasion and was chased by security to a point and in a short space of time realised the guy had stopped the search. The depths of the building was pitch black, one of them felt a presence brush past him and heard the breaking of grit/stones as it stepped past. No-one else in sight all the lads had seperated. On this occasion they all got out. On another they were caught.

I don't condone trespassing by the way and Fab are of course are to understanding this is purelly made up by a member with a vivid imagination

I love horror films, but have yet to find one that is really scary, I have loads of horror DVD's, I have all the Hellraiser films, Nightmare on Elm Street, all the ones that are supposed to be the 'scariest' of them all. I must say tho, that it makes me laugh when I see films that are 'sold' as the worst horror film ever and are given a 15 rating, lol.. they might scare 15 yr olds, but they aint gonna scare me.. lol..

Never seen a scary film, watched nightmare on elm street when i was 7.

Nowdays its all Gore porn, Saw, hostel, you don't care about the characters or the storyline, your their to see how they die.

Paranormal stuff is boring as hell.

For me Scream is always gonna be my favourite, its a brill film with great cast, great story, great twist and its got that humour where it takes the mick out of itself and horror.

But thats just me, huge fan of Kevin Williamson who wrote all 4.

An ex once showed me if your looking for gory stuff, check out bestgore as its all real. Seen some disgusting things on there esp now so many people have mobiles.

If you want to see something scary, just have a look around the dogging spots after midnight to see the strange woodland sprites come alive in the moonlight and lurk amongst the flora and fauna, then watch their pallid faces become mysteriously illuminated by horseless carriages with bright demons eyes and see how they turn to stone when bathed in the ghostly demonic gaze. muhaha mwuh hahaa haaaa!

Hey Polo

Loved the Hammer films but remember the film "Others". Well remember the photo on it of the house servants, taken post mortem. It was a Victorian fad and is really spooky. Even had stands to pose the corpses standing up or siblings cuddling.

The dead one is often the one in focus due the long exposure time Victorian cameras needed. Very unnerving and spooky.

A Home Among The Woodland Creatures

I found Event Horizon very disturbing in parts - the bit where Sam Neil is being forced to watch and relive the scene where is wife commits suicide makes me shiver and cringe every time.

It probably helps that it's one of the few horror films that has a cast of actual actors
