You’re a curious bunch, but I admire your lack of attention seeking. I can think of a few forum regulars who I’ve never seen start a thread. But my question is, you must think that would make a good thread, but what stops you starting one, or do you just don’t feel the need, or are there other reasons ?

I think I've started one thread ever on here. While it was a decent topic I got jumped on so ever since then I've not bothered. I could start a thread now and pretty much guarantee whatever the topic certain posters would jump on me in a certain way and I can't be done with it

I think quite often threads don't go well because they are started with a statement or scenario. There's no question to answer or way for people to get involved.

Why does a lack of replies put you off? It's not a popularity contest, I don't think.

I post almost as much as Tame, like Tames, a few go under the radar. I doubt either of us are that bothered when they do. Even though it's probably clear we do revel in the attention when we do get it.

I can't speak for him, but it's not always attention I'm looking for. Sometimes it's to express an opinion, to have a question answered or get something off my chest. I post for all sorts of reasons..

Unless it's "Ratemywilly.com" I'm not really fussed about how many answers I get. That's when my exhibitionist gets the better of me.

I'd like to see more posts from Forumites I'm getting to know a bit, but rarely initiate a post.

I thought it was because you'd all been there and done it.

A while ago I likened starting a thread to nurturing a plant from a seed;

1-10 posts - it's a weak little seedling, a sharp comment or post will kill it off, requires nurturing.

11-20 posts - growing stronger but requires attention to keep it going.

21-40 posts - it's starting to shoot faster now, it requires less tending and can be left on its own for a while

41-80 posts - it's taken on its own life now and is flowering

81-120 posts - you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your efforts

121-150 posts - it's getting rangey now and growing in unexpected and weird directions

151-175 posts - it's started taking over other parts of the garden, it's more trouble than it's worth and you wonder why you planting the fucking thing in the first place...

The website concerned says you need a Fab recommendation to join it!.... WTF? as the acronym goes. I e-mailed the Fab moderators to ask if they own this other website, which is widely reputed to be owned by them. I am still awaiting a reply.

This is so true. People only comment in the hope they get a reply and quote.

I don’t think I’ve ever started a thread. I’m the same in real life probably - much better at joining in, than starting a conversation.

And on forums, I’m probably drawn to reply to posts I might disagree with, because posting an alternative view on something always seems more interesting than politely nodding in agreement.
