It's good to get feedback sometimes if you have a general core to your makeup.

So you can see if people 'get you' or not.

Somebody mentioned on the thread the other day about how only a well-liked forumite could get away unscathed asking OPs question.

Our opinions and views clash on most things but I respect you and the fact that even though you post some controversial threads you never get personal and I actually don’t believe you post them to cause trouble as some so obviously do. You do brighten the forums up and have a positive view of the world.

And the responses would probably be different to each person who dared to post a thread like this.

Yet the tonal difference did seem a bit unwelcoming, not by you, just generally to the guy on the other thread.

I wonder if we are collectively as welcoming as we might be to either newbies or others who dont quite fit into the perceived norms of the forums?

I do wonder that sometimes myself. I think that the forums in general can be rather unwelcoming to newbies, especially ones that aren't perceived as being overtly attractive.

I know I’ve had to consider my own contribution to that thread and ask why I posted. The juxtaposition of this thread certainly makes me think even more about it.

I think that certain traits on the forums are viewed negatively, one being particularly needy or attention seeking. This type of thread identifies as both, although, I hasten to add, not why I started it.

Or is it just possible that people on both threads have spoken honestly and that is the reason for the perceived difference? Yes perhaps some of those on the other thread could have been sugar coated a little, but I don't think I saw anything that I necessarily disagreed with the comment, even if the tone may have seemed harsh - and in fairness the OP did rather set himself up on that thread by asking people not to pull punches.

So while I do think an element of "popularity" may guide the tone - in some instances brutal honesty comes into it too - both good and bad.

Of course there is also the old adage of "if you can't say something nice" to consider, and that partly is why I refrained from posting on the other thread.

People have always needed approval, because we are social creatures. But with the advance of modern technology and now social media, people crave validation from strangers on the interweb, the reason I have no idea. "

I think that's its because people consider social media to be an extension of their social sphere. As you said; people are social creatures and want to feel accepted.

Obviously some will possibly judge others for seeking what others consider validation online. Personally I just think that it's how social interaction increasingly is. For me, this thread has been an interesting thing and would just as much had the responses been overwhelmingly negative.

Yes, very true. Although, it's understandable given the different ways that he and I use the forums. I think I would've been more surprised if we'd had the exact same responses.

I’ve just noticed the thread hasn’t been deleted it’s still there. You’re right it was from yesterday evening but the tone of the responses is quite different. I know I’ve had to consider my own contribution to that thread and ask why I posted. The juxtaposition of this thread certainly makes me think even more about it.

Or is it just possible that people on both threads have spoken honestly and that is the reason for the perceived difference? Yes perhaps some of those on the other thread could have been sugar coated a little, but I don't think I saw anything that I necessarily disagreed with the comment, even if the tone may have seemed harsh - and in fairness the OP did rather set himself up on that thread by asking people not to pull punches.

So while I do think an element of "popularity" may guide the tone - in some instances brutal honesty comes into it too - both good and bad.

Of course there is also the old adage of "if you can't say something nice" to consider, and that partly is why I refrained from posting on the other thread."

I think that’s why I had to question why I posted my feedback.

I would say probably, with a 'but'.

I don't discuss similar topics with friends or colleagues so they wouldn't see me as being as passionate about those subjects. However, I'm the same online as I am in person and don't filter according to my audience excepting for circumstances. So I'd say yes, they would.
