"Probably because it would be massively labour intensified.....with councils cutting staff all over the country it's not really feasible for most councils." They didn't grit the pavements when they weren't facing cuts. Although some places are gritted, like outside our dr's surgery, but the problem with that is people trapse it indoors because they're too lazy to wipe their feet.

"why dont they get the people out of work or that are serving community time ..put the time to good use, good old shovel and back work ..." Why not make them do it naked or get them singing songs together while they wear bright orange boiler suits. That'll teach em the error of their ways.

"I think though that if everybody just cleared there on pavements we would be half way there. In Germany it is the law to clear your own pavement. We did ours at the weekend it took 5 minutes. If everyone just did there own bit it would be helpful." Great idea and I'd do it. Except for one day while I was doing it one of the local councillors walked by and said "Ah if you try and clear it and then someone slips you are responsible." Compensation culture gone mad.

"Why is the councils seem to want to grit roads but dont seem to want to make the pavements safe?. Seems like a false economy if they are doing it on cost grounds, because the A&E departments must be flooded with broken wrist, arms etc with people slipping up. " not forgetting those that trip because the pavements are in disrepair anyway?

"They do in arbroath they have a little snow plough trundles around doing all the pavements and spreads grit behind it . they tend to leave side roads untreated and just do the pavements only do main and bus routes good system realy if you wanna go anywhere walk to the bus stop leave the car at home " Yup all Angus towns have the same system and it works well.

" there may well be but they wont be able to make a claim against the council - because there is no requirement in the code of practice to grit footways

Has to be better than imprisonment for them.
