So, C has a bad history of migraines. His dads side of the family are awful for it, his dad used to get ‘suicide migraines’ which lasted months, and would get daily pain relief injections...

C has now been off work for almost six weeks with a constant migraine.

He also has epilepsy.

He has no tablets or medication he can take to prevent a migraine or get rid of one. He has his epilepsy medication which means he hasn’t had a proper seizure in five years (he was in hospital a few weeks ago where he had two minor seizures but the doctor classed them as faints as he got injections and warned the doctor he was needlephobic).

When C gets a migraine he can take 900mg of aspirin (yes, you’ve read that correctly) which kicks the pain pretty instantly...for a few hours. After that he can’t take anymore for 24 hours and has to rely on paracetamol. Which obviously, doesn’t cut it.

He’s exhausted and in agony all the time and can’t work.

He can’t get any medication because they all clash with his epilepsy medication. He’s been referred to neurology again, but it could take weeks (he was referred four weeks ago) or months to hear anything back.

Does anyone have any migraine solutions worth C trying?

He’s cut out cheese and most dairy but it hasn’t made a difference. I’ve seen that ear piercing that some folk swear by, but he’s needlephobic so it wouldn’t be easy for him to get that done.

His neurologist may look at changing his epilepsy meds.

I don’t have epilepsy but I take topirimate daily for my migraines. It’s taken me nearly 3 yrs to get to a good manageable place with them

When I have the ones that come with pain, I dont get any pain relief though sadly

Ouch that’s awful

And yeah, I think that’s what’s going to happen. There’s so many tablets he’s been on over the years that after taking them, doctors have realised he can’t take because of his epilepsy medication.

I used tiger balm massaged into my temples and that eased the pain a little but I'm sure that was more the smell than the actual balm.

Tbh the only thing that really works for me is a quiet, cool and dark room with plenty of water.

It's more about lessening the pain enough to let me sleep it out than actually getting rid of the pain entirely.

I have a friend that also suffers from them, I will ask what they do and see if it's any different and get back to you.

I feel Cs pain.... I've been a migraine sufferer since i was 13.... now 47.

Mine consist of extreme pain tunnel vision or loss of vision directly in front of me and no depth perception.... loss of understandable speech.... right arm and lower face tingling and total loss of concentration.

I've been using a drug called Imagran.... it's administered through a nasal delivery device.

Very effective against my kind of neurological migraine.... starts to work within 20 but shuts me down for 4 to 5 hours.... it kind of reboots my brain.

Yeah he sleeps so much at the moment. Can’t really go a day without napping. Or even just lying in a dark room - has my eye mask on, black out curtains and blinds closed, no tv (or if the tv is on it’s something to listen too, like David Attenbrough and the tv brightness is all the way down)

He’s got imagran in another tablet but it makes him feel absolutely awful, if not worse. He takes it as a last resort. Will shut him down, but once he’s awake again he’s worse

Have you tried any natural products like cabs oils? It manages my pain from fibromyalgia a little better than prescribed meds. xx

No we haven’t but could be worth looking into. He’s honestly at the point where he’ll try mostly anything

I was tried on other epilepsy meds first off which didn’t work on my migraines at all. Had to switch and have had to work up to 150mg. It makes me forget shit all the time mind but at least I don’t have permanent brain stem migraine anymore. Them and my classic ones are much more manageable. It’s worth it.

Riboflavin 200mg. It’s water soluble so what your body doesn’t need you piss out - like a highlighter pen.

If he wears an eye mask, you can get gell ones you keep in the fridge and those work well (I totally forgot about them)

For the natural products I would be careful with how they interact with his meds, they dont label them well so its difficult to find exactly what's in them.

Oh my god that's extreme.... the tablets weren't that effective on me.... just didn't work quick enough as i only have 30 minutes warning when something bad is coming.... so i needed a quicker way to get it in my system.

Heart goes out to him.... it's a very over looked illness.

Poor bloke I get one a couple of times of year and it’s straight to bed for me in a Gabapentine stupor.

Getting my eyes tested and wearing glasses all the time now have helped along with keeping hydrated. Not much help I know sorry.

Hope he gets better soon the pain is savage.

He had an eye test a few months ago, got a new prescription and new glasses. Head was a bit dull for a few days after but that’s normal.

And thank you!

I used to get severe migraines but they have subsided loads as I've aged.

I did identify several triggers and used to completely avoid them, nowadays I don't need to.

My triggers were caffeine, citrus fruits, cheese, red wine, chocolate.

I would suggest speaking to a pharmacist. They are the experts in what will interact with his epilepsy medication and can suggest other medicines he can take alongside and also any supplements or herbal remedies that are safe for him to take too.

I couldnt comment on any medication but have read about feet in buckets of warm water and a cold pack on the neck to draw blood away from the head. Sounds like a recipe for fainting but could be worth a try. Xx

When you find the solution let me know, I've suffered for 40 years, and OK not epilepsy meds, but others mean the usual prescriptions aren't advisable.

The piercing doesn't work, so no point in him suffering anymore.

I was recommended a dark room, white noise and lavender (except the smell of that makes me want to vom.) I exchanged it for Rosemary, and no not a cure, but it does help a little

I have migraines, they affect my vision aswell as the extreme headache, nausea etc.

I tend to take tramadol, paramol, ibruprofen plus an anti sickness tablet. I take them with a fizxy drink which helps my body absorb them as usually the stomach shuts down during a migraine .... this was suggested at a migraine clinic. It usually helps along with sleep and lots of water. You would need to check how they react with the epilepsy meds. I also take gabapentin (for Essential Tremors) which is used for epilepsy so those meds are ok with that.
