"Good work, shin splints aren’t half a bugger, hopefully you’re over them now ![]() Hopefully. I used to ref 3 games a weekend only about 7 years ago, so was pretty fit - albeit always overweight. I'm too old to ref again now, but it would be nice to get fit again. I don't have the time for the gym, but can try and make time for running most days - even if to and from the tube.

"I've had a quiet couple of weeks since Manchester marathon and even missed parkrun today. Volunteered at a local event yesteady which was fun although some runners really are idiots! I need to get done races signed up for the summer as only definite plan at the moment is Race The Train in august" Good plan, I made the mistake of not signing up for anything after my last marathon and lost all my fitness and motivation. Is that Race the Train the one up here? Never done it but quite intrigued as it looks a lot of fun.

"Been down in Newquay for a little break and inspired to start training again, now the evenings are longer and I have no excuse about the weather. I have signed up to do the oxford town and gown in a couple of weeks but I am at square one with training due to personal bits and pieces so going to sit that one out. Also moving up to Brum in August time, so I’ll be looking forward to exploring some new routes then! " That's a shame about the Oxford event, but if your not ready, it's not worth an injury But loving the positive attitude! ![]() ![]()

Is that Race the Train the one up here? Never done it but quite intrigued as it looks a lot of fun. " I normally have loads of events lined up so there's always a focus but I have to have eye surgery in May and best case scenario is a few weeks off. So I'm all out of sorts as I've no idea when I can enter stuff again and start proper training again post op. With hindsight I should have entered a later marathon than Manchester but I didn't know my surgery date so I banked on the earliest marathon... I think I'm going to try and find a half for the week before my op and force myself to train! On a plus point there's isn't a better excuse for a pair of Oakleys to run in than a medical necessity!!

"Hi All, a retuning crap runner here. I hate running. I reserve the word hate for special things and running is one of them. I hate running. I got into the habit of doing it last year but working festivals, being homeless, moving to Bristol and a couple of injuries (one permanent) put it on hold. The ONLY reason I do it is because the health benefits are overwhelmingly positive and I feel high afterwards. Tonight I tested my knee and lungs and went for a short jog around the block. Not as bad as I thought I’d be and I’m never going to be able to do hills again but it felt good. Oh, I hate parkrun too!" Sorry to hear of your injuries ![]()

"Thank you teamonkey, _elfastblond and insatiable nymph, I was extremely pleased ![]() ![]() ![]() As _elfastblond observed: can be a lot of factors; but also if you’ve not done much recently, then that’s a big step up. Also, time of day can affect how you perform (*running*!!!) Try to: keep to the plan; eat right; sleep better. You *will* improve. If there’s a Parkrun nearby, then try that out too; it doesn’t matter if all you do is walk round the 5km, because there will be a designated tail-ender to go with you.

" no no no...you answered your own question...'first run in 7 years, & 6km is a long run for that kind of lay off. Recover well, & start slowly, or should I say gradually although slowly might be an idea, look into couch to 5k as a start or adapt if you feel you can run further than that...Jogging? Pay! we are all runners." Great advice, thank you. Yes, never great to just dive straight into strenuous exercise. I should be added some context; I also cycle now (restarted about 2 months ago after a 2 year break) so my muscles weren't entirely unexercised. Also have a history of road racing (running) at a fairly high level behind me. Been out there time's now and doing about 27 mins for 5k. I'm going to stick to this pace for a while and try to consolidate my performance with an aim to bring it down to the low 20s by Christmas. My main aim is my cycling; currently doing about 100 miles a week; I'll not increase this by much but will try to improve my average time per mile. And, yes, we are all runners! This thread has helped me to try running again; all these stories are so inspiring - think you guys are amazing!

"Good morning. I haven’t participated to this thread . I have just started couch to 10K after 2 and half years battling with both ankles sprained , thorn ligaments and ripped hamstring. I need to do this but my ankles are weak and my confidence is low . However I am starting tomorrow week 2 and I’m running through fields and woods as it’s much relaxing. " Doing c25k or c210k will build strength up around the calf muscles which will hopefully protect your ankles, also what are doing in the fields and woods will build up strength just be careful you don't twist an ankle on a loose twig. Hope it goes well, keep posting in your progress and good luck!

"Hi everyone, group newbie here! I'm starting Couch to 5K today, never been a runner before but just want to improve my general fitness and do a bit of self-help on the old asthma front. I recently moved right by the Olympic Park, so I've got the park, Hackney Marshes and Walthamstow Wetlands on my doorstep to explore. No excuse now!" What great places to have on your doorstep to run around. Listen carefully to your plan even if it sounds easy just follow the plan don't overdo it as it will get harder. Running is great for asthma I know some great runners who suffer from it and you wouldn't know. Just make sure you have your inhaler handy. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress

I ran my park run PB at Hackney marshes a few years ago. Well worth giving it a go as from memory it was a very friendly event. There's a company called runthrough who put loads of events on at the Olympic Park, always a cool place to run, you're lucky to have it on your doorstep!

" it will help if you do simple strength exercises on your non run days to build some resilience into tendons, ligaments & muscles. Calf raises (can be done whilst making a cup of tea, in a queue or anytime you are on your feet) will help with ankles, hamstrings will respond to squats possibly if there is a strength imbalance with quads predisposing you to strains/tears. Hard to know obviously thru the medium of a forum on a swinging site!
