"No and how can you celebrate such an apparently important event on a different date each year" The date of Easter is determined by the phases of the moon. That's because the true origin of Easter is in Egypt and the celebration of the goddess of sex and fertility. The Christians came along basically rebranded it with their own narrative. Or did you think bunny rabbits and eggs came from the Bible story?

Anyway, no I shall not be thinking particularly of a deity who took human form so that he could sacrifice himself to himself in order to get around the rules that he created. Happy chocolate!

"Im guessing it made him cross " Don't you reckon the last bloody thing Jesus would ever want to see is a fecking cross? It's like Abe Lincoln coming back and being given a gun, or James Dean and a Porsche. If I'm the character of Jesus and somebody comes up to me brandishing a cross, I'm no more nailing the dick to the wall with my fist. Again, attempt at humourous commentary, dont need the hate filled religious messages. Believe what you want and take solace in that. If your faith is not strong enough to accept some minor joking on a website them that raises greater issues for your 'soul'

" You sound like you know, however you might like to refer to Josephus and Tacitus (Roman historian and Roman Senate), Pliny the Younger (Roman governor) and of course the Babylonian Talmud are just 4 well accepted and recognised sources that confirm a lot of biblical accounts that many want to dismiss. Interesting to note that each of these had a vested interest to dismiss the existence of, activities, death and resurrection/disappearance of and most certainly his activities afterwards (if they could). The thing one needs to understand too is that as with anything like this, the evidence is there and more will be uncovered that confirms what these non biblical accounts say and probably more as increasing historical evidence is found. One needs to know a little bit more of something before making silly sweeping statements otherwise one just presumes your closed minded and have an issue with religion.

I was actually trying to make a point to the poster who denounced the 'fairy tales' comment. I have no issue with those who believe / have faith etc, but many of them lack respect for the fact that there are those of us who do not. I wouldn't ordinarily ask a Christian to PROVE anything, but by denouncing another poster in the way he did, I thought was rather harsh

Yes, science is ever changing and disproving old theories, but all of that would be rediscovered in time. Modern religions definitely would not. If anything it makes more sense for people to be agnostic than follow a modern religion. What if you've picked the wrong religion and youve been worshipping a false idol you're whole life, that's sounds like a one way ticket down, especially according to christianity. I'm also curious how people can justify being religious and be on this site, surely it breaks an insane amount of rules

"Today starts easter and it is a big celebration in christianity, today marks the crucifixion of jesus, are you celebrating and thinking of him? I am. I don't believe in fairy tales. ""Fairy tales ""......it is NOT !! No? OK, prove it. Why? It seems to have stood the test of time, much longer than anything you or I will ever say. Secondly you find actually want to know, so there little point try to explain to someone who is closed and narrow minded. There's plenty of documentary evidence by many much more learned and respected than any of us. If you're genuinely interested go and search and read for yourself, but I'm gathering you're just another with an issue with religion rather than actually interested. If the world was to be reset, science would be rediscovered, modern religions would not. That's all the proof you need In what way? Science is an evolutionary understanding based upon many presuppositions which help to make up some laws. Some of these laws have changed as we've learned that some presuppositions were not as true as was once assumed. Maybe some new science may demonstrate some of our findings are not as concrete as we currently think too. I'm also curious how people can justify being religious and be on this site, surely it breaks an insane amount of rules" Why would most religions not be rediscovered? Secondly why has being religious and being on here a conflict? Religion is nothing personal in its true form, it's a set of rituals and external codes one can use and adopt. Spirituality is more personal. I believe we are all spiritual beings, some oppress it for fear of inner or outter conflict. Returning to your science argument, science I don't think in its current understanding can prove or disprove the spiritual world.

Well the large Hadron collider proved that there was no such thing as ghosts and spirits wandering out earth. As for conflict, Christian rules would say no to coveting your neighbour, adultery, etc, etc. It depends whether the follower is following it as fact or more as lessons. All my Christian friends treat the bible more as life lessons and not as facts, like they think the whole Adam and eve thing is bollocks and whatnot. As for why would modern religions not be rediscovered, they just wouldn't. Undoubtedly new religions would spring up as some humans just need something to follow to justify our existence, you would only have to look at the Greek pantheon, why does that no longer exist? People just found something better to follow so moved onto a new set of rules

Absence of proof is why we don't believe in the first place. Many say that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. They're wrong. When you expect evidence to be present, absence of that evidence is remarkably telling.

Grecian pantheonism was more philosophy than a religion and was driven by philosophical speculation. For this reason it is more rationalistic in its approach. This is probably why it died out as it wasn't really based on hard factual teaching. As philosophy changed it left it's religious side behind. Not sure your argument the modern religions just wouldn't exist is much of an an argument.

"if you take away all the myths/mirace add-ons, I think the nearest to what Jesus was really like was Ghandhi..just my opinion There's stuff come out about about Ghandi that would shiver your timbers, about his family home life, written by a family member two generations afterwards. A film was made and met violent opposition in India. two generations afterwards is longer than the First gospel writings so maybe pinch of salt (pun intended) " No one doubts he existed

Josephus/Tacitus writings are unreliable and the gospels were written a couple of decades after his life and are inconsistent on basic facts. There is no evidence for the census around his birth amd Nazarus doesnt seem to have existed at the time of his birth. There are loads of books about the historical Jesus. He is probably an amalgum of several popular nomadic rabbis preaching at the time. We have more evidence for Socrates existence than jesus amd plenty of historians have shown he may not have existed.

" It has, but the first time, you had no evidence it would support you other than faith, yet I'd guess you never thought twice about sitting in it, that my point. Same with getting in a new car and driving it, your faith is that someone else says its road worthy and the brakes will stop you. We exercise faith every day based upon what others have said or done without personal experience, then we developed a personal faith as we gain personal experience. That faith often replaces the faith we had in anothers experience.

"if you take away all the myths/mirace add-ons, I think the nearest to what Jesus was really like was Ghandhi..just my opinion There's stuff come out about about Ghandi that would shiver your timbers, about his family home life, written by a family member two generations afterwards. A film was made and met violent opposition in India. two generations afterwards is longer than the First gospel writings so maybe pinch of salt (pun intended) No one doubts he existed No one? Really??? Sweeping in the generalisations there . *seeing how well this thread is going, shakes head and retires to something more challenging, ooo snog, fuck, lick .. hmm* You doubt Ghandi existed? I think there's plenty of historical, written and verbal evidence to show that. There's also clear written historical evidence by those who didn't want him around that Jesus existed too. I think those who want to doubt either would believe even if either reappeared in front of them with photo id and a NI number. What historical evidence of those that didnt want him around is there? Show me evidence of: The census at the time of his birth Herod and quirrinius sat thrones simultaneously Nazareth existed at the time of his birth The slaughter of the innocents His trial and crucifixion Any of his miracles Having read academic and respected literature on biblical history for about 15 years i have yet to find a single totally credible piece of evidence for any of the above" Just a quick search seems to indicate there were 3 major census done within few years of each other. "Records exist to show that Roman-controlled Egypt had begun a census as early as 10 B.C. and it was repeated every 14 years. And Augustus himself notes in his Res Gestae (The Deeds of Augustus) that he ordered three wide-spread censuses of Roman citizens, one in 28B.C., one in 8 B.C. and one in 14 A.D.2 In between there are several other censuses that happened locally across Rome." Maybe you will dismiss the Res Gestate and the records as non credible. The slaughter of the innocents has plenty of historical evidence. I'd say whatever evidence may put to you, sounds like you'd dismiss it anyway as you've already researched very extensively.

"Today starts easter and it is a big celebration in christianity, today marks the crucifixion of jesus, are you celebrating and thinking of him? I am. I don't believe in fairy tales. ""Fairy tales ""......it is NOT !! No? OK, prove it. I don't need to, I just have Faith and believe..... Faith is hardly a reliable path to truth. Why not? The chair you just sat on, did you analysis it's capabilities, joints and structure before you sat in it? Yet you had faith that it would support you. We use faith in every day activities without a second thought. You haven't replied to my last comment. Is there anything that I couldn't believe based on faith? And we can make reasonable analytical judgements about chairs by testing. The chair I just sat in has supported me in the past, I have a decent amount of evidence that it is sturdy. It has, but the first time, you had no evidence it would support you other than faith, yet I'd guess you never thought twice about sitting in it, that my point. Same with getting in a new car and driving it, your faith is that someone else says its road worthy and the brakes will stop you. We exercise faith every day based upon what others have said or done without personal experience, then we developed a personal faith as we gain personal experience. That faith often replaces the faith we had in anothers experience." Once again, I have data in the roadworthiness of new cars because I do my research. Similar with chairs, I will test a new chair. Now, is there ANY position that I couldn't take based on faith?

"Today starts easter and it is a big celebration in christianity, today marks the crucifixion of jesus, are you celebrating and thinking of him? I am." Nah. I'm more of a frisbeetarian these days, had to leave pastafarianism behind because apparently you can't go carb free and still be a member (way to go Carl, nice info that would have been for the fucking start mate) Efbees don't mind about your carb load and you don't have to wear an eye patch (I kept walking into shit) Hope you manage to incorporate haribos into your murder/zombie/cannibalism ritual.

"HE died for our sins, because HE/GOD made an error giving man them in the first place. No thanks, I'll take care of atoning for my wrong doings with the specific people in question. This blanket forgiveness is not helpful thank you very much. I don't think you really understand how forgiveness works according to Christians. It's not simply "forgive me God" and all is forgiven." You ask two 'Christians' the same question on belief and you will get two answers. Each has their own way of interpretation of the WORD. I'm sure you have your own ideas but they are never consistent. As for original sin, which is why Jesus came to earth in the first place, is a ridiculous concept. As long as you accept my WORD, you get a free pass to heaven. Don't believe in me and its hell, torture and damnation. HE can keep your threats to HIMSELF and the I'll live my life as I choose.
