I'm sure with the success Adele has had, it won't bother her.

The fact that Lagerfield has an aging, ugly, dough faced appearence and fuck all going for him, might be a case of jealousy and sour grapes

Well i supose she is a bit, but if she is a good singer it doesnt really matter. Alison moyet was a good singer, and she was a big girl too.

It's not so much about what it means to Adele as it is about the message that it sends out to her audience - that despite her talents, the thing that defines her is her weight and build.

It is one mans opinion that is now popularised by media and therefore in the minds of those who follow popular culture.

His comments should have been left alone, not sensationalised.

They were after all, just his opinions.

Now you see this amuses me, i only caught a bit of the news, but they have obviously taken the bit about adele out and sensationalized it. He also was calling greek and turkish people(two nationalities) horrible things.

with assistance from the media, yes

i caught 10 mins of that new Gok programme last night

i know again it's a sample pick of people done to fit a particular tv format, but it was scary to see the kids having issues with such things

especially the lass who was wanting a bigger gap between her legs to be like some what to me was some anorexic model in an ad

Young girls who may see the news or paper with that title and not even read article will no doubt look at themselves and worry.

Size zero models etc and magazines saying you gotta be stick thin in order to be successful, for boys to like you etc. Rubbish.

Adele is beautiful the way she is, curvy figures on women are so much better than these stick thin girls.

This is in a similar vein to comments that Chris Moyles often spouts out on his breakfast show.

Calls people fat…. not exactly athletic himself is he?

I cant answer that because its along while since i studied eating disorders and i dont know statistics and how they have changed in the last 15 years or so, but i would say (and ive got no evidence to back this up) that if it was the case we wouldnt have such a problem with obese children/teenagers. Because that has definetly risen. We have always had eating disorders, mostly started in the 50's and 60's when glamour magazines and you had the gorgeous film stars. Women wanted to copy them. It has gotten much worse, however, everything is also much more publized now. You have started this thread because you saw an article. If the guy had passed the comment and noone picked up on it, would that have made a difference, or is it the media that is making the difference by being dramatic about what he said. The guy (in my opinion wrongly) said a few words. Now because of the media its going to be in all the magazines, newspapers, there is going to be a spiral of stories about young women and weight problems. These are going to be the things that the young girls/boys or whoever is going to take notice off

Oh and to add, someone been comfortable in their own skin (as I guess Adele is) are just as sexy, if not more sexy than someone slim that thinks they are 'fat'

But for many people, someones size does define them.

I have used the term 'fat cow' 'fat bastard' etc too many times to mention even though I have never been skinny (or anywhere near approaching it)

Am not saying it is right, but it happens and if someone is big, that is often the first thing you see.

As for Mr Moyles, as a broadcaster / celeb he should choose his comments more carefully. (as should I I guess)

the only people who drive others to an eating disorder is that person themselves....it is (i think) caused by a person's own perceptioin of themselves, not the perception of others

Sadly, that's how it is.

Karl Lagerfeld is a famous designer. Adele IS a big girl and not the size he'd design for. Why he felt the need to state the bleeding obvious is beyond me.

However, I doubt his comments will cause a mass increase in eating disorders, the likes of Victoria Beckham, reed thin after four children are more likely to have more of an affect I feel.

Designer Karl Lagerfeld has called Adele "a little too fat" during an interview with a French newspaper.

This is a man in the last year slimmed down to get in ladys small jeans and would have a fan always not for fashion but to cover up his fat neck , I find it so strange him calling her fat when he knows how it feels to be fat and people making you feel like your 2nd class .. its not on . She had a fuller figer and its lovely to see a real woman whos face is so lovely too. x

They must do... or the media wouldn't bother printing it.

They also pointed out his comment about H&M...

He complained to them that his range of clothing was for "Slim and slender" people and they should not have it available in a size 14...

The old git seems to have forgotten that he himself had to lose over 6 stone!!

Adele can lose weight, IF she wanted to...but he will alys be an ugly little arrogant fooker

"I wonder if we asked 100 doctors their opinion what they would say??

The doctors i have seen never mentioned my weight, not till i got diabetes, also dare i say it some doctors are a bit on the large size too.

You see the irony there right?? Your doctor is not very good "

You need a doctor to tell you being overweight is unhealthy?? The clue is in the word OVERweight.

In Adele's own words.... Go girl!

”I love food and hate exercise. I don’t have time to work out… I don’t want to be on the cover of Playboy or Vogue. I want to be on the cover of Rolling Stone or Q. I’m not a trend-setter… I’m a singer… I’d rather weigh a ton and make an amazing album then look like Nicole Richie and do a shit album. My aim in life is never to be skinny.”

Fair comment I'd say.

Karl Lagerfeld is not someone today's youth would be listening to. All he has achieved with this comments is proofing what a bitter old tart he is. Now don't call me a homophobe, because I'm the biggest (!) gay lover there is.

Karl Lagerfeld is just jealous of Adele's youth and all the success she has despite her bit of extra weight. It's a shame that he forgot that he used to be a fatty too.

Don't think you read all he sad just a misquote reading this. I could quote you our of context and call you homophobic but then I would be no different from you.

Facts wise Adele is fat! That doesn't mean she isn't a good singer because she is but she is a fat one.

Sorry but I haven't read the rest of the thread, so if this has already been mentioned, appologies...

Karl Largerfeldt (spelling) has come out with other less than savoury comments over the years and he is simply courting publicity... it is no coincidence that he has just release a new clothing line, more 'budget' that his usual 'haute couture' range.

As for Adele, she is beautiful (he did say she was) and talented, and curvy, good for her... his comments about Turkish men and someone else were equally offensive, he is a silly man

"my real point in this post was, do you think idiots who make comments like the one he has, actually encourages the youth of today to stay slim, therefore bringing on eating disorders?

.

the only people who drive others to an eating disorder is that person themselves....it is (i think) caused by a person's own perceptioin of themselves, not the perception of others"

Fact, we all evaluate ourselves continually against others. We may not be aware of it but we do it to a lesser or greater extent perhaps, but we do it.

its not singular morons like him that make popular opinion really though, afterall, fashion was only invented so they could sell new clothes.

its the popularist media that change peoples opinions and try to dictate that size 10, or a 30" waist (or whatever) is the 'perfect' shape/size

In context it doesn't sound so bad, (although I would have used the word over weight rather than fat to describe someone else)

I think if it is said with venom then there is a difference.

As for starting eating disorders I don't know, as the woman is successful even though she is a larger girl...so young girls can see you can still be succesful if you have the talent.

I have more of an issue with the media portraying the likes of V Beckham as looking fantastic when she looks like she needed a good meal.

dont know why people have aproblem with people being called fat, as thats what they/we are. (hate the word obese, just sounds so nasty, no idea why, tbh)

the reason why the word now appears to be so nasty is because we have all the other 'nicer' words.

rubinesque

cuddly

chubby

podgy

and so on.

if it were just fat and not fat than most would just be ok with it

She may be larger than sum or FAT in some peoples words but it doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t healthy and it certainly doesn’t impair her singing abilities. The only thing it may reduce is the popstar wankfest in young teens and I don’t think she will miss that attention. For all we know the publicity may have increased record sales for her and she may just be laughing all the way to the bank over this one.

this is true the word fat itself is not offensive its the way some people use it that makes it offensive, if your doctor told you you was fat thats not offensive because its his job to look after your health and they are not trying to be nasty, if some guy on here calls you a fat bitch that just a nasty personal attack and how else can you take it other than offensive?
