Age verification for porn sites

Jump to newest

Chilwell

New laws come into force on the 15th July in which age verification will apply to all porn sites.

Sites will be blocked if you are not able to complete the age verification.

Details are limited at the moment, but will make it more problematic to access legal porn sites.

Good or bad idea..?

It should have happened last year, then got put back to earlier this month, then shelved til late this year or early next year and has been snuck back out to a couple of months time.

I sell the stuff for a living, it'll help me out somewhat.

But the amount of back and forth the govt have done over the last few years about this is frustrating.

Still, fisting is watersports are legal to sell again now after the ban that tosser Cameron managed to get imposed.

But the more tech savvy will just go use a vpn.

Most will want it, cause they are shit parents who cant monitor their own children and want the state to do it instead.

"Most will want it, cause they are shit parents who cant monitor their own children and want the state to do it instead."

I'm in favour of the principle and monitor my child's internet usage perfectly well thank you - another layer of protection can only be a good thing though.

Whilst kids are tech savvy and some will find a way round it, the change, coupled with responsible parenting and other factors will provide a block to the majority though.

My biggest concern is that I suspect credit card or similar details will be required as "proof" and although part of the measures will see sites being security rated there are huge data breach possibilities - would have been better if the government had introduced some form of user certification process linked to passports or National Insurance number to run alongside it which would protect users a little.

Not the best article out there but it does highlight the data security matter.

Best summed up as: security? Lol! Hackers are gonna love this shit! Hope no one minds knowing what you want to look at..

Takes 2 seconds to break the internet monitoring. If you were able to monitor your children perfectly well you would be aware that to break the government monitoring they will break all and any way you have to monitor them too.

They may also end up on much worse sites in their quest to get beyond the block.

Would you not rather catch them on porn sites yourself, and be ready to give them a sex talk, like finding a playboy under a mattress? Than finding out about it from the most dodgy sites on the internet and hiding it so well a government could not track them?

This has been put back and back and back it’s at least the 3rd the Govt has delayed this there’s a lot of legislation and hoops to jump through before it can be ratified... Trust me as someone who worked in Govt until recently ... if it does come through this year it won’t affect us too much if you’ve already had verification on identity

Exactly, which is why a central government database that verifies age would be a better option rather than an individual site run verification system - the article mention several ways of validating - so will be interesting to see what they are

Not entirely sure what you are trying to suggest, but I'm perfectly comfortable, and confident, in my monitoring methods thank you and what's more my levels of trust and confidence that my child has no desire to bypass them.

Believe it or not I do actually have conversations with my children about this kind of thing anyway, as any responsible parent would.

However IF a further layer of protection is being offered, regardless of whether it can be bypassed or not (and given details are scant you can't *know* how easily it can be done - I'm sure the authorities are aware of how easily it can be done currently and will have taken that into consideration) then I stand by what I said about it being a good thing.

Don't ask me I'm not tech savvy,I shall go prove my age for a fiver at the shops to get my code if feel the need,I don't think it records your information,so no risk of being on a porn database

I shall await to find out more information

It's just another method of allowing identity theft, if you have to give your passport or driving licence scan (as has been suggested by one 'age check' group) you have just given a way for anyone controlling that data to lose or sell it.

If they wish to sell it they have to get permission from the government, this then allows the government to see what all are looking at. This is all done with the huge cry of 'we must protect the children', while allowing child poverty, grooming on social media (this won't be age verified) and the destruction of societal values as they are targeted to increase profits for big businesses (look at the amount of adverts on social media).

Oh well, it's just another hurdle for everyone to jump over and won't stop the kids from accessing anything.

Clearly with the DCMS being able to handle data so efficiently it'll all be absolutely fine.

Wouldn't you still have to sign into a site even using a VPN ? I thought it just encrypted the path so not traceable back

If it's a VPN that makes it appear you're outside the UK it wouldn't.

I work remotely a lot and sign in via a VPN usually using the UK VPN but that is sometimes down and I have to use the US one - when I do all sites divert to the US version even though I'm physically in the UK.

I’d rather see more protection for kids sending and receiving nude pics via kids sites and social media than picking on porn sites. Too many young kids are being groomed on social media and kids games.

Its a bit pointless as there are various work around which the younger generation will just use. It might be funny watching some older ones struggle though.

Yeah, fuckin hilarious watching the people who can access it not be allowed to as they can't get to grips with the pass codes.

A bit like the time wasters and forum surfers on this site who can't get to grips with swinging and the rest of us laugh at them

Pointless do they know how long it takes to bypass a blocked site. 1 second.

Britain is coming more like China and north Korea. Blocking X sites, blocking download sites, blocking certain news articles and news sites.

Soon we will have a app installed on our phones to follow government orders like China.

Protecting children even if they will get around the restrictions has to be a good thing.

I have used a VPN for several years and I will continue to do so. I’m not risking any data breaches with card verifications and wouldn’t trust a porn site to securely store my details.

And if the child uses an adults passport or drivers license to gain access to porn sites? Easily done. How will that be checked? It's a flawed plan and another tax or source of revenue for the porn sites that are making money from it.

Odd when the rules and ability to access porn etc had more reactionary controls in this country the likes of Savile, Glitter, Morrison etc got away with abuse with no problem.

Also Policing this is just impossible.

Its a vote gaining attempt in the UK - plain and simple from the party who tried to prevent information about sexuality in respect of gay people at the same time as being protective of those people listed above.

Another ridiculous piece of legislation which will do nothing useful but make it harder for those who want to access this material legitimately.

Kids will find a way to watch porn and its up to the adults to ensure their understanding is more realistic

I think they will lose customers. People aren't going to feel comfortable walking into a shop and asking for an adult site pass or uploading their I'd details onto a site to gain access. I understand its being run by the bigger porn sites themselves. Just another way for them to get more money and stop free access.
