Of course it was and that was kind of my point about trying to define punk - a lot of the "punk" bands crossed genres and didn't necessarily fit with what most would call the "punk" sound all the time - the two examples I gave proving that point rather nicely

Tricky as there are some great songs in the genre. I will throw a couple of my faves into the mix

Siouxsie & The Banshees : Spellbound

The Dammed : Neat Neat Neat

The Sex Pistols : New York

The Str*nglers : Feel Like A W**

Lots of debate over the years as to whether the last song is racist or an anti racist song. I happen to think from the lyrics it is an anti racist song.

Yes, as in your other conversation on this thread, we all have different interpretations.

I guess the biggest problem is, we have all also moved on and had our horizons expanded.

Hip Hop, Ska, Blues, etc. all have elements (in their time and place) of what one could describe as punk. The attitude, rather than the music?

I don't think the Jam ever identified themselves as Punk but as New Wave although would class In The City as a punk song, maybe their only one. As others have said the definition is rather fluid.

Would like to also throw Magazine : Shot From Both Sides into the mix as well.

Fair point and I guess I have been well and truly hoisted by my own petard on that one

Although I'd still say Precious has it's roots more in funk than punk if talking about sound, and even in attitude - but don't let that detract from me holding my hands up to my own contradiction

The Jam are a difficult one to define to be honest and I'd agree that in terms of sound alone - In The City and possibly Modern World are probably their two singles that stand out as "punk" - even looking at their first album you have songs like Away From The Numbers that are definitely not punk in sound.

They're associated with punk because of their attitude and connections with the early punk movement in terms of gigs etc but then as they themselves have said they hardly looked the part with their sharp suits and ties.

They then evolved further and built up their Mod following whilst still appealing to people outside of that, their music as much as anyone from that era probably defies any specific genre - with elements of punk, soul, funk, Tamla, New Wave and they were doing kitchen sink dramas in songs well before The Smiths - and that mass appeal is why at their height they were probably the biggest band in Britain.

The first CHS gig had the outcasts, the ruts and the str*anglers supporting them.. this is the sort of line up that made thousands shell out for flights hotels etc which was only a good thing for Belfasts business.. saying that we do like to see young bands that are starting out.
