Do you have much?

Have you managed to abstain from something long term? Do you have any tips?

I'm trying to give up sugar. All I can think of is sugar

Hefty Hideaway

I don’t have will power per se but I’m a stubborn cow. If I’m doing it to prove a point then I find it more achievable. Probably not the help you were looking for but good luck!

I have absolutely no will power other than my doctor telling me that If I eat more sugar I’ll die lol but try replacing it with something else. I got myself one of them female women things and o boy has that stemmed my sugar intake

Generally my willpower is shocking but I did give up alcohol for 13 years. I decided I didn’t want it and that was that. No planning or thought, just the decision to stop.

If only I could do that with other things.

I've tried that tactic too-I've told people I'm doing it and don't want to lose face by failing!

I find that's the best way. I gave up smoking a few years ago. I just decided not to do it anymore and it worked. Sugar is so much harder to avoid though

It's not easy to be successful, you need to find a distraction that removes the focus from the craving. I'm no expert. Good luck I'm sure you can get there.

That's the hardest part, it's a whole lifestyle switch, most processed foods have sugar.

It passes in time. Well not sure about the sugar craving. I gave up smoking and apart from a couple of small slip ups, I've stuck to it. I'm very much an all or nothing sort though so just went cold turkey. Everytime I wanted to smoke I would distract myself until it passed. Good luck OP!

Central

Our minds are better if we have no conflicting desires, so there's not an internal battle between will power and a different compulsion.

Check your needs, devise an alternative strategy for conflicting needs if possible, before you take a decision that you will stick with. Ensure that your motivation is high enough, doing what you can to increase it. Don't take the decision and start until the right time.

Devise and follow your alternative plans for other needs.

Stay focused on why you want this thing. Make it enjoyable

The Town by The Cross

Write down the main reason you want to give up sugar.....

If you don't want to really but just think you should then you are probably going to fail.

Slowly come off sugar, like a drug its addictive, instead of 5 biscuits have 3, cut down sugar in tea coffee etc, eventually your brain will stop craving it, eat sweet alternatives like fruits , dried fruits and again eventually you will stop thinking about it

Had to reduce salt intake cos of high bp.

Getting used to unsalted crisps and food was hard, but now I prefer it and can taste salt so much more accutely in other foodstuffs.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I gave up alcohol for 25 years. I made that work by always being the designated driver and having a hard rule that I never drink alone.

I gave up sex for a year. That got out of control and ended up being 14 years. The hard rule was no touching - cold turkey.

I had to do an elimination diet for 3 months. Because that was imposed on me I did find I was craving things but the goal was enough to keep me in line.

Hard rules work for me.

I have the will power of a toddler at the moment. I went 4 months without sugar once. I think I must have been possessed at the time by a responsible grown-up because it certainly wasn't typical of me.

Sugar is actually the most addictive substance on the planet.

But I dont know why anyone would want to give it up.

I have to say my willpower is pretty good.

I stopped smoking for 7 years but started again before Xmas i have stopped again quite easily once I put my mind to it, no patches etc needed

Or when we spent 24 hours on Ben Nevis with 16+ hours on Tower Ridge itself.

I was lead climbing in treacherous conditions, it went dark, we had 1st degree frostbite and i had to keep 3 people safe also keep their spirits up, one of my mates was completely gripped in fear.

It took every ounce of will and resolve to press on safely and we got to the summit at 02:30 to clear skies and bright stars for the walk off

My will power used to be amazing.

I did a 10 day water fast.

The Cambridge diet for 3 months - just 3 shakes a day - I lost 3 stone.

I have been silent with no distractions in meditation for 10 days at a time 4 times.

I have saved money to travel every 6 months for 11yrs on a wage that was a pittance.

I gave up smoking 20 cigs a day after 25yrs of it 3 Yes ago.

These days I have not a single drop of willpower

Especially with food and wine.

I can't even go one day without over eating - I suck!

I'm trying to do the keto diet as it's basically what I eat anyway, only problem is I can't resist beer so even though my overall weight is down a bit I can't shift the belly lol.
