"I wonder if someone can clear something up for me, with reference to the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race? I thought it was supposed to be a crew of lads from each Uni in the boats...but I see that James Cracknell (46 years old, Olympic multi-medal winning rower) was in one team.... wtf, how can that be fair? " he went back to do his masters in human evolution.... well thats what cambridge said!

"Ok... so he's a mature student. I can just imagine him turning up to try out... "I say Giles, its that rower chappy, you know, the one with a gazillion Olympic rowing medals, he wants to have a bash!" "Oh, I say Tarquin, that's spiffing, lets not insult him by actually letting him try out, just tell him if his arse fits the seat, he's in!" " see.. most of the "lads" in the boat are international athletes... so its basically a rich "all star" race....

" That’s quite funny... but there is a piece on the bbc sport website about how it actually worked out. Just how tough it must have been for him to get a seat in the boat is highlighted by the fact he is seven years older than the father of one of his crew mates!!!

"He's studying at cambridge so is classed as a student. I believe he had to try out in the same way as everyone for his place " Yeah, ok....oh, look a flying pig!

Well I doubt his soon to be ex wife sees it like that! He was so committed to the boat race and his training that ultimately their marriage collapsed! Don't think he had quite the easy ride for a place that you imagine

"He's studying at cambridge so is classed as a student. I believe he had to try out in the same way as everyone for his place Yeah, ok....oh, look a flying pig! The boat race is a different proposition - it's 4 and a bit miles along a river whereas an Olympic race is a mile and a quarter on a lake. It's like asking Usain Bolt to run a cross country 5k - very different. He'd have had to work hard to get in especially as it is a team effort " Go look on Wiki for the list of things he's done, and then tell me there was anyone else on the boat better qualified lol.

He's 46 - he won his medals 15 years ago not at the last Olympics. A triathlon is not training for a power endurance event like the boat race. Yes he has experience and a winning mentality but any crew needs that through the whole team to win. He didn't handle all 8 sets of oars himself. He, and his team mates, did a good job in a massively difficult event.

He hasn’t competed at elite level since 2006. Yes his level of fitness will be considerably higher, and he’s kept himself active, but I don’t imagine for one minute they would gift him the seat.
