Anyone keep chickens ?

I’m thinking of getting some chickens, I like the ones that look like they are wearing snow boots, also you get to call them Mavis and Gertrude. Plus they are quite calming. Anyone keep chickens, if you do, do the pros outweight the cons ?

I’ve had ex battery hens before, very rewarding watching them turn from barely feathered and scared of everything as they’ve never seen the sky before, to confident funny bug eating raspberry stealing little characters.

Oh and I recommend getting an Eglu, so easy to clean and won’t rot like a wooden one. Second hand are really good value as they are really sturdy.

I bought fertile hatching eggs and an incubator..great fun watching them grow. Also hatched some Indian Runner Ducks. Foxes only get in if you havent done enough to secure the pen..no excuses for that one.Human error..not the foxes...23 chickens and 8 ducks ..never lost one.

My family always had chickens. I miss their lovely noises, it's so comforting as they cluck and croon. Silkies with the mad scientist hairdo are very pretty (except the cocks who have some weird nobbly shit going on with their heads).

I had an orchard and I used to let ma next door neighbour keep his hens on ma land as well as keeping the WeeDs s down, I got fresh eggs and Brenda used to make me a lovely appple pie

My dog would disagree - 2 flew over from next door, dog ate them - his breed has very high prey drive so anything that isn't another dog or human tends to get viewed as dinner

I have two chickens keep them up top of garden in an old shed and let them out during the day. They are great at clearing up the slugs etc and will polish off almost anything you feed them. The only downside is the cleaning the coup or shed in my case. And also in winter you’ll need a heat lamp to keep them warm. Get a few silkies. They are mad looking but nice eating !!!

Always had chickens & geese growing up.

Geese are brilliant at guarding your house, they'll go for anyone they don't recognise walking up the drive

I've got a 75' jungle to tame this summer, we've talked about getting some feathered friends when it's done.

We've got a mad fox population here though, which puts me off

We’ve got 3 pekin bantams called Mabel, Gertrude and Hetty. I’ve wanted chickens for as long as I can remember and hubby indulged me shortly after my 40th birthday. Pekin’s are like fluffy little footballs with feather booties who waddle when they run. They’re an extremely friendly breed, great if you have kids as they’re so friendly. Ours love sitting on my lap

The breed are excellent mothers and are great at raising chicks. This can be a down side too though, they go broody at the drop of a hat and want to sit on the nest to try and hatch the unfertile eggs.

Chickens are, in my opinion, awesome! Pets with benefits!

Weve had chickens for a few years.

Got 3 ex batt this time last year.

They were really scrawny looking and bald but now are lovely. 2 eggs a day.

Wouldnt be without them.

I have 7 chickens including a few ex battery hens which I got from the British hen welfare trust . I would recommend a few pullets or even a few pekin bantams even .
