BBC wasting money on American football!

Nice to see the BBC can find money to buy the rights to show American football, but cant afford to show any decent live football. Outside of expat Americans, who actually is going to stay up and watch this crap?. If the BBC wants to waste money on crap sports, cant they bring back kabaddi(that crap Asian sport that Channel 4 used to show)?

Why is he the BBC controller?.

Ive never come across one british person who takes one little bit of interest in american football. The BBC cant find the money to screen live FA cup football or internationals(the national sport) but can find money for the rights to show a minority sport.

1. I follow American Football but admit I am in the minority.

2. The cost of tonights screening is probably less than the cost of 1 live championship match.

3. The fault lies with the overpricing of rights not with the finances of those trying to buy them.

There is quite a big american football following if twitter is anything to go by. Vernon Kay is a big advocate of it and there was a rather well attended NFL game at Wembley last year.

Just because you dont like it no need to throw a strop lol

plus Westy is right, the greed of the FA priced out the BBC it would seem

In answer to 2. i very much doubt it. The BBC not only will buy the rights to this evening's entertainment, but will also employ their own 'team' hence adding to the cost.

The thing is, ITV would never dream of showing something like this because they know they wouldnt get the audience to justity it.

The superbowl rights will be far, far cheaper than football. It's not a question of one or the other.

The BBC normally run it from the studio with at the most 1 or 2 people there...no cameras or anything.

The use network US feed...just as Sky do.

I am staying up for it. American Football is great and this is arguably one of the world's biggest sporting events.

Plus it's not either or. It's no good really saying "if the Beeb didn't have the SuperBowl they could get some Premiership football."

The greedy buggers who control Premiership football are way out of the BBC's league now unfortunately.

Or would you rather they saved the money and pleaded with the Prem to allow the live screening of a high glamour fixture like Wolves vs Wigan??

Anyway you may not be aware, but channel 4 was funded diffently back then, where as now it run just as any other commerical tv station, hence why they dropped it along with athletics, and italian football and tour de france. Any commercial tv station funded on advertising would find it hard to justify showing it on the audience figures it would get. And before you mention SKY showing it, that is a subscription channel.

Hang on though.

Last week we had the mass excitement on the Beeb of the World Indoor Bowls coming from some holiday camp.

Before that the Beeb served us the incredible spectacle of the world darts championship. The one that none of the stars play in any more.

Tonight they give us "Chappers" hosting the SuperBowl which they are probably getting for less than the price of a Championship footy match.

The SuperBowl is the least of their crimes.

And most of the channels/stations you mention have been discussed as having cuts/got rid of to save money. That is part of my point, can the BBC justify paying for a minority sport in the middle of the night, when they are talking of big cuts/merging of BBC3/4 and radio stations to save money. The BBC has got to make 15-20% cuts to its budget, and then buys the rights to american football. Seems very strange to me.

This is a public announcement....

Time for a technical slant on the matter....No television programme is compulsory, there is not a national requirement to watch any TV programme, there will not be further action taken by the authorities if citizens do not watch any particular TV programme.

In order to assist with this matter television manufacturers have installed channel selection buttons and on/off knobs on all new televisions and remote controls.

Other major football tournaments get pretty good coverage. Why not this one?

Because we are in Britain and there are no British teams involved?

Just a thought.....

The Premier and Football league boast players representing over 50 different countries, including some african nations. Britain represents a small percentage of this number despite being the home of these competitions.

Next! "

Britian has a big african population so there is big interest in the african nations cup.

Sky is a subscription channel and it's not cheap. I only have it for the football, they show lots of sports that i have zero interest in,and i have no input into what they should and shouldn't show.so the sports i'm not into? easy..i don't watch em. it's really that simple

"Hang on though.

The SuperBowl is the least of their crimes."

With regards to the darts, i believe they only showed one live match - the final, and shared coverage with ESPN. And the championship match will get more _iewers. Then again the bowls probably will as well.

Actually Wolves are histroically a bigger team than at least half the teams in the PL and I would watch it, but then again, I am a fan lol.

As far as the Superbowl goes I'll be watching the lazy fat so and so's make a play then have a 15mins rest until the next play lol.

I had a similar problem with BabeStation on Free_iew.

I settled down to watch it and 4 days later woke up with a 3 feet high pile of tissues, my penis was a bloodied stump and a phonebill for £9,000.

Thank God the SuperBowl is on free tonight!!

Wolves play good football at times and are im pretty sure in the top 10 most successful teams so i think we deserve out fair share of games being shown....obviously slightly biast _iew but still

maybe if they attacked a bit more instead of trying to rely on a very very dodgy defence they would get more air time and not have got knocked out of the f.a cup by the mighty blues

Hahaha Where are you in the prem? Oh wait i forgot your not in there at all are you!

but as the no1 form team in the country and the carling cup holders we shall see at this point next season who is in what division lol

Yeah but it comes to something when your best season included you getting relegated! haha

meowwwww

them claws are sharp indeed.

relegation is nothing new to us but silver is silver.

i won't ask when the last time your boys won some as you'd need to consult google or a history book

Well it might help you out if you do go on Google actually and look at the table of the clubs who have won the most titles you'll find Wolves a hell of way above you Bluenoses! I rest my case! "

Don't argue with the Small Heath fan, tin pot club not fit to lace Wolves or Villa's boots.

"I am staying up for it.

Actually Wolves are histroically a bigger team than at least half the teams in the PL and I would watch it, but then again, I am a fan lol.

As far as the Superbowl goes I'll be watching the lazy fat so and so's make a play then have a 15mins rest until the next play lol.

Hope Wolves stay up this season!

since everyone has been waiting for my reply to this thread i'll answer the question......

how many games of american football does the BBC actually show live each year....

1..... let me say that again..... 1

how many million _iewers watch the superbowl in the uk.... about 4 million...

which isn't much compared to ya average soap or football..... but compared to anything normally in that timeslot (sunday evening till monday morning 11pm till 4am) that is absolutely huge...

so as a one off... absolutely it is worth it..... from channel 4 originally showing it, then ITV did for a few years... and now BBC do...

actually... the amount that the BBC pay the NFL to show it is minimal.... (its part of a contract that allows BBC radio to air a live game every sunday night on 5 live sports extra)

and actually this superbowl is weird as 2 of the higher profile players are actually british, or have UK passports!!!

"

Ive never come across one british person who takes one little bit of interest in american football. The BBC cant find the money to screen live FA cup football or internationals(the national sport) but can find money for the rights to show a minority sport. "

actually... found some reported numbers...

ITV paid the FA 50 million pounds a year for the rights to FA cup football and internationals.....

BBC paid the NFL 1 million pounds over 4 years the show the superbowl plus the radio coverage......

now....... value for money??????

i would have been watching the game but i'm gutted the 49'rs fluffed it at the last.

i was a fan of theirs when channel4 first started airing it before the 3peat.

when you watched that montana, rice combination with craig and rathman as the safe options it was a thing to behold.

since then defence kinda killed it for me. maybe its changed now but when the 49'rs come back with that same flair then so will i

i have been playing the last few years, and will be watching it.

you can guarentee the cost of screening the superbowl will be nowhere near as much as the rights to MOtD or live premiershit games.

4 million?.

Where did you get that figure from?. If you said a million i might believe you. 4 million your having a laugh

Taken from "The Independant" website

"British _iewing figures have doubled over the past half-decade: 4.4 million tuned into BBC and Sky last year, according to America's National Football League (NFL), while an estimated 40 new adult and youth teams have sprung up across the country since US athletes first started playing games in the UK five years ago"

thank you BB.....

now _unchbox can swallow some of that humble pish pie......

i hate it when people show there ignorance of a subject without knowing some of the true figures......"

Depends on what figures your using; on the NFL messagboard they are claiming 800,000 average _iewers, and maybe another 200,000 on sky, so that makes 1 million.

No problem

The article also talks about the Scottish born player, Lawrence Tynes, who could become the first Scot to win the Super Bowl if the Giants win tonight.

"I am staying up for it.

Actually Wolves are histroically a bigger team than at least half the teams in the PL and I would watch it, but then again, I am a fan lol.

As far as the Superbowl goes I'll be watching the lazy fat so and so's make a play then have a 15mins rest until the next play lol.

Hope Wolves stay up this season!

I wasnt paying much attention to this thread til i saw Wolves mentioned. CL as much as i loved you before i love you even more now for that last comment

Hehe! Welcome babe. I've always had a soft spot for Wolves!

You know mines more than a soft spot more like an obsession!

I rest my case!

oooh if only all those titles would have helped you win the other week but i'm sorry to say no one could see them the layers of dust.

maybe in a few years they might mean some extra league points but for now, it won't help come the end of the season.

i will be be sad as mccarthy will get the sack and i think he's a great manager but it's going to happen.

so titles or not we'll all be in the same boat

It is quite funny how the ONLY argument a brummie can have against us is the fact you knocked us out the league cup. As if thats some huge achievement.....Must be the best thing going for you at the moment then seeing as you cant shutup about it haha. Your on a good run and only in the play off places, that good run is inevitably going to come to an end and you'll stay in the championship where u belong!

then we shall be waiting here for you but i've a feeling that when you lot go down we'll be be going up.

"Nice to see the BBC can find money to buy the rights to show American football, but cant afford to show any decent live football. Outside of expat Americans, who actually is going to stay up and watch this crap?. If the BBC wants to waste money on crap sports, cant they bring back kabaddi(that crap Asian sport that Channel 4 used to show)?

"

I have to say i would rather watch some lower league football than the American Circus event thats currently being plaid. If the BBC is to spend money on sports i would rather see it go into UK sports.

Id rather have 3 consecutive seasons in the prem and probably another, then be promoted and go straight back down and resort to bragging about a brief stint in europe which lets face it aint gonna happen again. Wolves have been there done that more times than you. If you can come into the prem and stay there longer than 3 seasons and i mean present time because the league is much tougher now than before then you have a decent argument against us but until then im afraid you just dont compare!

I have no problem with admitting we played crap against you because we did. If you wanna focus all your attention onto the league cup then so be it but i think most clubs would rather concentrate on the league because i know which i would prefer..that win against QPR on the weekend which got us out the bottom 3 there is no way in hell id exchange that for beating you lot. don't deny us what we've earn't.

i'd like to say we had to work hard for our win against you but instead i have to honestly say that for us it was easy and it was your lot that worked hard for a defeat lol.

i understand you need to blame someone but shouldn't the blame lie at your back 4 ?

I have no problem with admitting we played crap against you because we did. If you wanna focus all your attention onto the league cup then so be it but i think most clubs would rather concentrate on the league because i know which i would prefer..that win against QPR on the weekend which got us out the bottom 3 there is no way in hell id exchange that for beating you lot. Aint worth it 2 bit! By time you lot come to realise that'd chelsea would have knocked you out and you'll be on a shit run letting your chance of promotion slip right through your fingers!

that win against qpr will only be worth something if you stay up, if you dont would you swap it for a major cup ?"

We will stay up though more chance of it than you getting promoted or winning the cup again. If it bothers you that much your more than welcome to message me come the end of the season if im wrong....I just dont see it happening aha

ooh i totally agree with you.

3 seasons of constant relegation battles seeing my beloved team clinging on by the merest of margins way outweighs a major trophy and a season in the championship where we could never dream of playing the likes of chealsea at the bridge,

ooh what a coincedence thats our next fa cup fixture. please share with us yours as its slipped my mind for the moment(season)

We've beat Chelsea in the PREM, if i recall you didnt? and i highly doubt its happening in the cup then when you get knocked out by them might hopefully knock abit of sense into you dumbwitted fans, you all think your untouchable because you won a league cup and knocked wolves out the cup. Its laughable it really is! :P

You don't have to be American to like AMerican footie, as I can testify. My son is obsessed, absolutely loves it, spends lots of money on merchandise from the states etc.

At this moment in time I am in bed but I can hear it in the next room and it will be on all night as he is staying up all night

I cant believe you left me!! haha

Haha, I went to get something to eat!

Caught MOTD while I was at it. Besides, from what I've read, you didn't need my help in the banter department!

Haha oh nah, i have enough banter with other shit fans to actually know what im talking about......half the time! lol "

Oh and I forgot to say that I also like it. Has absolutely nothing to do with the sport, but the players, their outfits etc, are so much sexier than our footie

Not watching but don't think theres one show on any the BBC channels I watch. Too much dance, reality tv, home building programs, kids tv, soaps, period dramas etc

Yet to watch other channels that don't get a penny from the tv license still have to pay.

Even if you have a tv and no aerial hooked up eva cuz u just watch dvds or play games, stupidest thing eva.
