Scary Movie Scores

What certain scores and soundtracks from movies send a shiver down your spine?

The theme of the Ark of the covenant from Raiders of the lost ark is a nice score as it makes the ark so mysterious but also terrifying. The music certainly makes the ark something that should never be disturbed and it is always surrounded by death.

Jerry Goldsmith’s score for The Omen trilogy.

Note: It is a classic case of the so called Mandela effect that so many people seem to erroneously ‘recall’ that the original movie featured Carl Orff’s, seminal, ‘O Fortuna’ from Carmina Burana.

No list in this context would be complete without mention of Bernard Herrmann‘s classic score for Alfred Hitchcock’s, Psycho, nor a mention of John Carpenter for his work on the previously mentioned, Halloween and other classics such as the Fog (a highly underrated and highly atmospheric score).

Also, related to the directional works of Carpenter, Ennio Morricone’s score for, The Thing set the mood of desolation and dread perfectly.

Another of note in terms of creepiness, Charles Bernstein’s score for the original, A Nightmare On Elm Street although the end credits soundtracks, for the numerous movies which were often supplied by obscure American synth/rock acts generally sounded as though they were recorded in a tin shed

I like the theme of The Thing. It certainly emphasises the movie's sense of isolation and fear of impending doom of a lurking monster.

I've only seen Beetlejuice once a long time ago now so can't remember the opening theme to that.

Another one that sticks in my mind was John Carpenters Christine film, the song coming on the radio every time someone gets their comeuppance

I haven’t watched Beetlejuice on years as it scared the shit out of me as a kid.

As for Christine, I can't help but think of that song Bad To The Bone which was in that movie as well as in Terminator 2

Disney movies can have particularly creepy and sometimes scary music for their Villains like the evil queen from Snow White, Usual and Maleficent for example.

The music during the spindle scene in Sleeping Beauty is pretty creepy and makes the scene even more scary.

This is a very timely thread OP. I've been listening to the Jaws soundtrack for the past few days now. It really is a masterful piece of work by John Williams that goes way beyond the main Jaws theme that everyone knows, so eerie and atmospheric, pieces that at times really do get the heart beating a little faster.

I also love Psycho and Halloween. Bernard Herrmann's use of staccato strings in the infamous shower scene in Psycho has to be the most perfect use of music to create fear and tension in a film ever.

I think I have heard that somewhere. He was a very talented guy. A lot of the movies he did with Hitchcock just would not have been the same without his music.

Very true. I'm sure Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein did music for The Twilight Zone as well.

Dawn of the dead (original George Romero version)

The music is trippy and odd. The gore and location of the movie also cannot be beaten. Best horror movie by far!

The Shining.. its done so well you dont even realize its there. There is music in all the creepy scenes, the bat scene, the maze scene etc. Just fantastic unsettling music.

Music by legendary Italian group, Goblin who have supplied many a classic genre score over the years.

One of my favourite pieces of music by Elmer Bernstein has to be the werewolf theme from An American Werewolf In London.

It has a great blend of horror and mystery of the werewolf and it's curse.

Just remembered another good score which has a creepy gothic vibe and that is the opening music of Alien 3 called Agnus Dec.

It does have that sense of endless space but it has this feeling of dark brooding dread and unforeboding terror.
