I know this has been done a fair few times on here but it's been a while so I don't see any harm in reminding all the ladies to go get it done.

Friends, family, partners and spouses please offer support in encouraging ladies to get it done. Offer to look after youngsters. If you're an employer, have you considered allowing ladies to take a paid hour off work to make it easier to get it done?

I've received bad news this morning. It's been a troubling couple of months and now looks like that will be extended.

Please ladies get it done. And if you have symptoms between tests please don't ignore it and don't take no for an answer. Get checked. I had a struggle to get a test because I was given the all clear last year after a colposcopy and treatment. I now have high grade changes and would have had to wait another two years for my routine test!!!!

Hi, really sorry you are going through this, it's very stressful and extremely difficult sometimes to get taken as seriously as needed by some health professionals.

I hope everything works out for you, sending a virtual hug xx

I'm really sorry to hear about your bad news. As others have said I really hope things work out for you, and you don't have to endure prolonged stress.

I had my first cervical cancer screening last November. I had been receiving letters since I was 24 to go and get checked out. Initially I didn't book a screening as i was scared about pain. I had a cystoscopy a couple of years ago that wasn't the slightest bit painful so i knew the cervical cancer screening would likely be painless. However I have a lot of medical appointments to attend and kept putting it off as the last thing I needed was another appointment

I finally got checked out and only a couple of days later revived a letter telling me some abnormal cells had been found

I know about one in ten have abnormal cells and they're often nothing to worry about. I had to wait six weeks for my colposcopy though and it was so awful not knowing what might be found.

Luckily everything was fine, but had it not been, and I hadn't got myself checked out the outcome could have been very grim.

It's important to get screened. It in my takes a few minutes and xould save your life.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's so important that women know it generally doesn't hurt if you relax. It's so easy to do as well, over and done with in about a minute or so and as you quote rightly said, could save your life.

I'm not ready to leave my kids motherless and they are at the forefront of my mind when I go for screening. I'm not thinking about what the nurse thinks of my foof!!!

I have been in your shoes so many times xx The longest I ever managed to go between smears was 12 months as they mainly came back as CIN 3. I am huge believer & campaigner for smear testing & will continue even though I’ve just had a total hysterectomy & had my cervix removed.

Please keep us updated & I’ll keep everything crossed for you xx

Can I ask op, did you request at your gp for a repeat test? I had a colonoscopy and removal of cells a year ago and they said I'd be called in 3 years for a new test. However for peace of mind as I've had unexplained bleeding (they said I'm probably in my menopause) I'd rather have a test sooner.

Booked in for the end of the month. Due to my age, I think this might be the last one I will be called for so will have to find out how I request one thereafter.

If your doctors is like mine, you'll have to insist and be firm. I pointed out that the amount that don't have them done means there must be lots of money in the pot so I'll take the place of someone who doesn't want it.

I hope your recovery is swift.

I think sometimes it's a postcode lottery as to what kind of care and treatment you get.

I had a smear 6 months after my colposcopy and was given the all clear (possibly a false result) and here I am a year later looking at going through the same again.

Colposcopy book for later in the week.

Part of me wished I'd just ignored it and left the lid on Pandoras box!!! But I know that's not good

I am patiently awaiting the result of mine that I had a week before last. I've been putting it off for years. I was registered in Wales and screening is offered from age 21 there for those born before 1993. So I'm a little annoyed with myself for putting it off for so long.

It was painless. If a little uncomfortable and I'm not one for small talk at the hairdressers never mind while having my insides examined.

I decided it can be no worse than the brief spell I endured with a catheter last year and whilst I had tried to book in with the gp previously it was difficult to get an appointment as the nurse only did daytime Wednesday's.

The nurse is now there all week and after hours so I was able to get an appointment the week after I called and just happened to have some time off.

If any fellow forum thread lurkers are like me. Make that call and get an appointment.

I always found smears fairly uncomfortable, however, it's definitely worth the discomfort. I had abnormal cells 3 times and had to have smears every 6 months for awhile. Now I don't have to worry about it as I have no cervix but I don't think anyone can stress the importance enough of having them done.

To the OP, best of luck

I asked about turnaround as I had read 12 weeks. The nurse said given all the recent press coverage it's likely the labs will be working over time and I should check in with her after 4 weeks.

As poster above said... phone them that is way too long.

If they’re still reluctant, see if you can pay to have the test done. I’ve challenged this before and said I’ll pay (as over the years I’ve had abnormal readings / colposcopy ) as I didn’t want to wait for the routine call, haven’t been charged yet.

Yep very important to get checked. I don't find the screening any more than slightly uncomfortable so it's really worth going for peace of mind and early detection. I've also had CIN2 and have to go back in July for a 6 monthly test again. I'd rather all that than to find out too late I have cervical cancer. The treatment for that is much worse. I'm staggered people are waiting since August for results. Must be completely different in Ireland as mine have all come through really quickly.

I find my smear to be less painful than the sti swabs that take longer and I feel are more invasive.

Both preferable to the consequences of not having them.

A smear detected abnormal cells, had a colposcopy which indicated CIN 3 cells, and needed laser treatment. Was not a fun time believe me.

Recently had the all clear at my recent smear.

Smears are important ladies. Don't avoid.

I agree it's so important. I had mine done in February and then had to go for a colposcopy. I have to go back in a year for another smear test.

I was so scared but I had my best friend with me and she was such a great support. The actual procedure was fine. Uncomfortable but im no longer scared about next time.

Go and get it out the way ladies xx

I used to have a smear every 12 months for 10 years due to having cin 3. I begged my doctor to keep it at 12 months but no, every 3 years. I think it's a disgrace for those who've been there and worry constantly.

I now make sure my daughter in law gets her a done too

I'm a huge fan of smear tests. A bit meh, but great for peace of mind

There's nothing to it really is there?

Not sure about anyone else who's had problems but I worry about how rapidly the cells are changing. It's not like its anything you can see or feel. It's like one minute it's fine and the next it's not.
