"I watched an interesting program about it, where they compared the west and islam also asia and what they come to a conclusion was that religion is what makes a culture strong, they have both religion and religion as politics, where west have somewhat lost their christianity and pride, whats your view is it religion?" What did the Programme define as being "strong" and "pride"?

"And yet religion causes so much conflictThat is right it does that as well." I don't think religion causes conflict, I think it's used as a tool to rally the masses, galvanize them to a politician/leaders cause. On the whole.

"My view is that yes, religion is what makes a successful civilisation." I agree with you but I expect you won’t find that many fans of religion on here

"I would say a culture based on shared beliefs brings the strength - doesn't necessarily have to be religion." Also a great point

My family and friends give me strength and some do not share the same religion as me or are even religious.

"Shag you have a gift for asking the simplest of questions, that dont have a simple answer. It's great for debate, but I cant be arsed with this one, sorry!" Ty yes and you are right it is a complicated subject too but yes good for a debate

"I would say a culture based on shared beliefs brings the strength - doesn't necessarily have to be religion." Yes, I agree, historically religion has the been the way this has been achieved. We need to figure out a new mechanism, as belief in Sky Wizards is diminishing (even in those Asian countries where it is still strong). Possible alternative for groups to hang their hats on environmentalism, a belief in the world and our duty to it could be a good glue for community...

"I wouldn't say our culture in the West is weaker for a lack of religion. We include everyone (or try to) including all the various Faiths. We export our culture via music, art, film, television, internet all over the globe. Whether a culture based on win-at-all-costs-free-market-capitalism is a culture worth having is another debate entirely. For me, the answer is a firm no." But are not the goals of all faiths the same? Treat others how you would like to be treated Honour your family and heritage Set some key laws, such as don't kill etc. Strive to be the best you can be And be humble about it Oh . . . And pay the leaders of these ideals lots of money

Even cults pretty much fall under those same doctrines (although some need a leap of faith (the irony of this phrase is not lost) to see how they fit)
