so, as you might know (cos i keep bangng on about it) i have really got into Ceroc dancing and this has lead me to want to get fitter (no one wants to dance with the sweaty fat girl lol)

i know i wont push myself if i go to the gym on my own so have been thinking of getting a personal trainer.

has anyone worked with a PT before? whats the going rate? any on here in my area do me mates rates?!?!

Hi. I have worked with 3 PTs and to be completely honest FOR ME they were a total waste of time.

I set off thinking they would motivate me but ultimately the motivation has to come from yourself. One of the guys was an ex-Royal Marines PTI and he told me all that happens is that people just don't turn up for sessions and then cease contact.

The PTs know that if they scream and shout and bollock you then you wont come back and you pay them more money. The motivator has to be you doing something you enjoy and will stick with.

Cost-wise the guys I saw were £35-£40 an hour as I'd booked a block. They can be much more expensive than that.

This is only my experience and results may differ as they say but I'd save myself the cash and find something you will stick with. Even if that is swimming, walking, dance classes, a martial art or anything.

My personal trainers are fantastic but hold back with me. One is an ex-marine and goes red the other giggles.

Perhaps my future son in laws are not the best choice.

Personal trainers, the latest 'in job' for anyone who is fairly fit and cant find a career in anything else..

Loads of fly by nights our there...make sure you find one who is registered and qualified.

Don't know about the going rate for personal trainers, however, home helps/dog walkers in my area charge around 10 to 15 GBP an hour.

Mine charges 12 GBP an hour.

Going rates are usually £20- £25 ph. It's not cheap! Mates rates I would do but im in Sheff x

I've used PTs in the past. They charge upwards of £35 an hour, usually with a discount if you buy bulk sessions.

As in any job - good and bad ones out there, as someone said get one with the relevant quals.

A decent one will suss what type of trainer you need - a shouty shouty person, an encouraging person etc and will be that trainer for you. I found it useful because it was a fresh set of ideas for new ways to exercise and also I kept going where on my own I might have stopped purely because a) I knew he'd give me more sets if I stopped and b) I didn't want to look bad - it's a pride thing

most PT`s are the absolute shits.

if you have a friend that can go with you who has the same determination then do that. i`d join a fitness/muscle forum for advice on exercise and nutrition

I might sound like your Dad, but the best thing you could do Evie is to join Slimming World or Weight Watchers and use it to compliment your dance class.

You shouldn't need to get fit to dance, you should dance to get fit.

Speak to Diamond, she'll help you

Stick at it though, you're on the right track

I've been with the same personal trainer for over 20 years.

I'm not fit or buff at all but she must know what's good for me because she's always saying "do this!, don't do that!, I said do it like this!, why haven't you done what I told ya!"

I have 3 hours of dancing each week, 1 of ballroom and latin, 2 of tap.

On top of walking the dog every day for 30min 6 days a week, plus a long walk about 2h at weekend.

Soon I shall start cycling more, using the indoor exercise bike first, then on the road with my bike when the weather is nicer.

That is quite enough for me without resorting to personal trainers.

As for diet, I have not cut down or change anything, still eat whatever and whenever I like.

I'll be happy even if I do not loose anything and stay the same, without sacrificing on what I like to eat and drink.

I never buy ready made meals unless they are heavily discounted, and would not touch anything labelled as diet/low fat, or branded, as they are overpriced for what they are, IMHO.

Best bit of advice I had was quite simple and didn't come from a personal trainer 'Eat less, Move more' I also avoid large meals in the evening. Just eat less of what you enjoy, walk more often and take the stairs more often than the lift. After 5 or 6 weeks you'll notice a difference. My job involves sitting in an office for several months and then being at sea for a similar period, so I find it hard stay the same weight which can vary by 7 or 8 KG. The hardest part is to stick with the plan. Best of luck.
