I think PC (and censorship) can be a bit too extreme at times. However there should be some sort of standard for it. Unfortunately it's gone too far in some cases.

We’re always evolving as a society which is a good thing, but perhaps too much. Whilst others are behind with very backward views on race, gender and sexuality we are embracing, but almost to the extent where we can’t even say an Englishman, Welshman and Irishman joke anymore...

Tin hat on time

ummm...hate to tell you but legally under the race discrimination act if you stereotype someone because of their race ie: irish are stupid scots are miserly welshmen and sheep etc etc and somebody complains to the EHRC (Equality and Human Rights Commission) and says its offensive to them and their race/culture then you can be prosecuted.

Not saying its right not saying its wrong but it is the law.

Whats liberal about sending a bloke to jail for a joke with his gfs dog.

Or sending a kid with a hate crime because they posted some government approved lyrics to a friends instagram page

Or having police waste time moaning about who supermarkets sign post the tampon section.

When did authoritarianism subvert the word liberal

You hear it all the time, “it’s political correction gone mad” it’s because it’s true. It should be obvious by now to most people that political correction is a smoke screen used to censor and restrict people’s right to freedom of speech.

Im all for the hate speech laws in place to deal with people who preach genuine hatred and threatening behaviour and violence, but it’s gone beyond the point of no return. These laws are now used to silence people, simply for having a difference of opinion that doesn’t match the ever expanding narrative of the establishment.

I treat people how I would like to be treated, with respect and no pre-judgement, The worlds full of dickheads and disrespectful people, if you don’t clock them from a far straight away it’s easy to tell up close. But these dickheads should be free to say what they want regardless of whether me or anyone else finds what they say offensive.

Not really. Unless it's against the riot act or hate speech, it's legal, so people can say it.

What the people who whine about it are objecting to is other people using their free speech to challenge them.

So, what they'd like is to say whatever they want consequence-free, and when it doesn't happen, they whine about it.

I think we're talking at cross purposes.

I agree that some people whine when their opinions are challenged. I don't agree in shutting down debate. If your view is robust then it should withstand questioning.

Yes, when debates sometimes get shuted down because they get challanged they will say it is hate speech cos the truth in what some might say becomes uncomfortable to hear.

Politically correct means we have to restrain from been honest sometimes one of my colleagues at work is of foreign origin and frequently hides behind the foreign aspect to criticise, start arguments and then complain that the English confuse them. I won't name or shame or even reveal the sex of this person. It happens and the person is very clever because its gets to the point they are condescending and gets away with it. Sad really...

We don’t live in a politically correct society. The media might not be allowed to use certain phrases, but in the wider world it’s used.

One prime example are the comments shouted from the terraces at football matches.

to ask the question is great, to always ask questions is great, however asking a question that only suits your agenda which fits your narrative is not.

people appear to be claiming that PC has went mad are often the ones who have ideals that go against it, these people are also often the ones that do not understaand how they were enabled 'free speech' in the first place.

so going with the pc went mad analogy in this day and age it means things like:

be able to make jokes about other peoples ethnicity(at a detriment to them)

make jokes about anothers sexuality(at a detriment to them)

make jokes about a persons disability(at detriment to them)

now joking aside, when they factor these into some real life scenarios we get people who will then use the PC gone mad excuse to discriminate against others, regardless if there is any supporting data.

I dunno for me pc gone mad is that race is now a legally acceptable hiring criteria through precident despite being a legally unacceptable criteria.

The only differnce being which race you are hiring.

Thats pc gone mad where its one law for one and a differnt law for the other.

It can be taken to extremes in both areas, most people who bang on about "PC GORN MAD I TELL YA" often tend to be types upset that they can't spewn old racist terms, homophobic comments or insult disabled people anymore. But it doesn't mean people also agree with fining and arresting people for posting song lyrics and such, intent matters.

I grew up in the 80's, my adopted family are hugely white working class scottish, I really dont ever remember seeing anything like bernard manning on our tv, if I did it was the things deemed OK for television.

Now looking back can anyone honestly say his stand up was appropriate?

I say the same of any standup comedians, whether its black people using the N word, to other comedians mocking a disabled child.

I worked in mental health for a decade, there were some funny experiences, yes you can make light of some of them. However if you are using it in a manner that is a deceptive way to make people view others, you really should be careful on how you promote it.

Free speech is not an entitlement just because you are a human, it is there to protect the common good in society. So it should be used properly to its best.
