Tolerate change in society

From reading another thread it got me thinking, how tolerant of change are you?

A friend of mine is old school, lives in the past for the vast majority of things. He is unable to accept that things he likes have, or are going extinct. Be it music, architecture, social trends, fashion, sexuality and gender ideas and views etc. A very static and fixed view of the world.

I embrace change, but I do like the feeling of nostalgia when I think about the past. Mainly things I did with my parents, friends and siblings though, more than in a things were better back then way.

So long as it's moving forwards, I'm all for change. Going backwards is pointless.

I would say I am very old school but those are my own values and preferences that I choose to live by. I would never seek to impose them on anyone else, and would expect the same courtesy in return. That doesn't mean I don't embrace change where I can see the benefit.

I keep falling back to Einstein today ... but he said:

The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.

So to advance and change we need to change the way we think

I have 'old fashioned values' in that I believe in good manners, politeness and tolerance. I think change is a good thing and necessary for us all to improve and move forward but we also need to be careful with what we change, after all we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I like that but I think I prefer Gandhi: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

I used this in another thread, I make no apology for repeating

Change is good.

Change for the sake of change is bad.

Why should we all have to change our views because society dictates so?

Just because someone else decides that my beliefs are old fashioned, I’m supposed to suddenly change? No.

Change happens, whether you like it or not.

You can either accept it, and go with the flow, or you can rail against it, and be buffeted by the current.

There is a lot of stuff that makes me shrug my shoulders, some I don't like, and some confuses me, but I understand that the world isn't going to sit still for me, so I have to accept it and move on.

I work in change management, my personal circumstances have recently changed, my kids are youngish so constantly change. Life and society constantly evolves and changes. For me this creates opportunity and the chance to re-evaluate myself. Not a bad thing imo

Nobody says you have to change your views but do you adapt?

The thing is how you act upon the differences between your own beliefs and views, and the changes that happen.

Using my friend as the example again, he just can not get his head around the changes in men's fashion, and will not think twice about voicing the opinion to people, quite often in an insult. Not because he is a horrible person, he just can't adapt to new changes.

Never dwell, always move on.

The nostalgia threads are amongst the worst on here but without them I guess Peter Kay would have no material.

I think like many I adapt to change. Some changes I welcome and adapt to easily, others take more time.

People who can't or won't are often unhappy

Nostalgia is fine. It's how you view it in comparison to the now that can cause issues.

I'm not much of a fan of roughly the past 10 years of music. There may be a few hidden gems out there but overall my tastes have not changed with it. However I do accept that it is how things work, new generations have their own ideas and tastes (regardless of how I view them). I don't dwell on "things are not like they used to be".

I like that but I think I prefer Gandhi: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”"

Ghandi's words are powerful as they are empowering unlike many others that sound nice but give little onsite to achievement.

It's a timeless quote which though attributed to Gandhi, has been around much before his time. It was very appropriate for what he was trying to achieve.

That said, he apparently led a double life which has annoyed avid followers with the way he treated his immediate family.

Some quoted progress as good, it's not progress that's good but what one changed too might be good or might not be.

Going forward isn't always good either, going back can be the good and better thing. The difficulty is in accepting that it wasn't good to move forward.

Realising that it's not the moving forward that's important as some think and advocate, but the moving, the shifting from a current state of mind to another doesn't mean one is moving forward but rather one has moved, forward, backward or sideways, if you understand what I'm saying.

You can always adapt without changing your core beliefs. With something like fashion, I might wonder why the fuck someone pays huge sums to a clothes manufacturer for them to have Nike or Adidas or whatever emblazoned across their chest or leg, butI won’t voice the word “twat” out loud.

But I’ll be honest, I do believe in the stiff upper lip and self resilience. I do inwardly roll my eyes when I hear someone say they have social anxiety, when in my day, they were just shy. Food anxiety was just a fussy eater. You get my drift.

There seems to be a push to medicalise every imperfection someone has and place a burden on us all to change around that problem. That’s where I push back.

It's hard for some to see how others view things. This applies to both parties, those that won't/ can't change and those who do change easily with little regard too. Change has consequences not just for the one changing but also those others around. We may not see how it effects us but it always does in some way or other.

I like the technology side of changes. We have moved forward so much due to technological advancement I do accept it hasn't always been a positive change but I dont find it intrusive because I dont allow it to be...I dont find facebook twitter insta etc intrusive because I dont use them I always always refuse when anyone asks to use my personal data I refuse to allow my location to be used. I use a VPN. In fact I keep my digital footprint to a virtual minimum this keeps me in charge of the technology rather than it being in charge of me. Im not so naive as to believe there arent files on me and my media/internet usage but I bet mine are an awful lot smaller than most.
