Just wondering if food purchased in a farm shop actually tastes any better or is it just an excuse to charge more. I guess the only way to find out would be to blind taste food.

I think the issue with farm shops is that sometimes expectation outstrips reality

Not sure if they do taste much different to be honest , but you do know where the products come from , a farm shop that rears it’s own lamb, beef and pork and only sell that on the shop are usually good places there’s a couple near me and I know the staff well and if I near to know anything they always willing to tell me

Probably depends on the farm, their location and practices.

Haha exactly.

Unprocessed foods don't taste as good.

Theres a reason why people are addicted to junk food - it's because sugar salt fat and chemicals all mixed together taste awesome

Unprocessed organic food is undeniably better for us - but is really expensive and shopping for fresh food will take over your life!

I wish I had the time and money to eat this way - with a personal chef to cook it all for me

southend

The one I use is considerably cheaper than Tesco or Lidl, and doesn't use plastic bags, which is an added bonus.

Some stuff you can taste the difference, some you can't.

It all depends on how good a cook you are

I go to my one once a year for my Christmas veg, I think it does taste better but it's quite expensive compared to Aldi!

In the middle

We have a few farm shops where I live, one that makes great pies/pasties with their meat and produce and another with a fantastic butchery dept. I think people have forgotten that potatoes are covered in dirt and carrots have knobly bits on them, supermarkets promote them as “wonky veg” but if you are as old as me you know they are how veg used to look, plus people don’t cook these days, everything comes in a packet

Can’t say I notice a difference.

My Mrs and I are surrounded by farmland with a couple of farm shops within 5 mins drive.

We mostly shop at Lidl, had no issues with any quality there yet, I have had poor quality at farm shops several times though.

I do 90% of the cooking at home and actually make better food from shopping at Lidl, compared to a big supermarket simply because there’s isn’t the choice of everything at Lidl. So rather than jars and pre packed frozen food. Most of our food is fresh now rather than frozen.

I always cook. It may take time but food in a packet usually tastes horrible. I was potatoes buy always eat the skins.

Supermarket veg is scary

All the same size and shape in scary gaudy colours that no veg grown naturally has ever been.

It's been genetically enhanced, pumped full of whatever and grown in greenhouses with no soil in sight.

But it's all under a pound and is pleasing to the eye so fuck it right

East Sussex

Quite a lot of farm shops buy stuff in so some of it will come from the same place that supermarket vegetables do.

The best tasting vegetables are ones you've grown or the pick your own stuff.

I’ve tried a lot of them and they have all been different, I alway check the ingredient to see what they contain, I think you get what you pay for these days, if you want quality you have to pay for it in food these days.

You can’t check what’s in a bunch of carrots held together by a bit of string

Alnwick

I live in North Yorkshire and to be honest put yourself in any direction and you’ll run into a farm shop within a couple of miles.

Some can be more expensive than supermarkets as they try, and fail, to compete.

I personally do think that the food tastes better and it being better for you speaks for itself.

I like to visit my local farm shops every few weeks and every so often you get a rare find that you’d never see in supermarkets.

Recently I went to one and found a punnet of chanteney carrots all different colours.....orange, purple, blue, white made a fantastic colourful salad with some balsamic chicken

As a farmer myself. Food in a farm shop comes at a similar price to what the supermarkets and butchers charge. We only make the small amount of money that thr processor would make. In my opinion it tastes a lot nicer knowing where its from

The small farm shops are better, actually on a farm with home reared pork, lamb and beef. They are a treat but would not buy from 5hem weekly.
