Hi all,

Over the last few weeks I have a very itchy brown freckle on my hand, it’s grown in size and feels rough.

I’ve now scared myself to death via google and wanted to some advise.

Seeing the my GP on Thursday but worrying myself silly until then.

Help xx

Oh no! Please try not to worry. Any way you can bring your appointment forward!

NHS direct are really good, or maybe go and see the Pharmacist, he may give you an idea and recommend something to relieve the itching

Well done for booking an appt with GP to get it checked out.

Chances are high it’s nothing, but better to put your mind at rest. Now stop googling and do something to pamper yourself, there’s absolutely nothing you can do in the meantime that’s goig to make the situation any better than it will be on Thursday, so no point in giving yourself an ulcer with worry.

Great advice... Go and see a pharmacist if your docs appt isn't until later in the week. Mr D had a melanoma removed off his leg about 10 years ago, nothing but a cute scar there now. I do keep an eye on his freckles now though

Your GP will be able to fast-track your referral, and you need to keep pushing for it.

Really? Just seems like a waste of doctors time and could have been served by seeing a pharmacist first.

Actually this is a clear case for a GP consultation.

I disagree.

Saw a pharmacist a few years ago about a mile, said it was nothing.

Had a medical for a job, my doc saw it and said he wanted to do a biopsy. Pre cancerous cells present and it was removed.

GP is a much better option and not a waste of time.

The OP has a suspicious mole. That is totally different to feeling a bit itchy. Don't confuse the two.

An itching mole which has grown in size is a case for the GP without a doubt, in that situation I wouldn't hesitate.

An itchy freckle is probably nothing but best to get it checked. In the meantime stop googling it and use a good moisturiser to help with the itch. I've seen my gp several times about moles they are always happy to take a look.

Can I suggest that you look at the NHS choices website, which clearly states that people should see their GP if they notice changes to moles or freckles.

That might just save your life.

North west ish

Step away from google and keep that appointment on Thursday. Hopefully it will be nothing but it is best to get it checked out. It is always good to be mole and skin aware. Take a good look at yourself regularly. Look for any 'ugly ducklings', as in things that stand out as abnormal for you. I am quite pale and freckly, but I know I would be getting any new ones that looked different (shape, colour, size etc) checked out. I was given this advise from a cancer specialist. Doctors would rather you take the time to get it checked out than worry about it or go undiagnosed.

Good luck.

Northampton Somewhere

I echo the stay away from googling anything medical, you always get worse case scenarios!

I went to my doctor about a mile on my back that I caught somehow and made bleed. He took a photo and measurements and every time I go he checks it.

Try not to worry x

You've done the right thing making a GP appointment. I went a couple of years ago as I had what I thought was a mole on my back that had become rough, itchy and would peel and occassionally bleed when it was peeling. Turned out to be a sebhorrheic keratoses which is completely harmless. The skin doesn't shed as well as normal on them so I can prevent these issues by exfoliating it. A bonus is this also makes it less noticeable as it's a lighter colour when the top layers are exfoliated off.
