Anyone employed as a PAT tester ?

What is a typical wage for this if employed by someone ? read some salary estimates online, but they sound a bit to good to be true.

Don't know how much they get paid but I do know that theirs no mandatory legal requirement to have anything PAT tested within the workplace. It's all optional.

yes you are correct about that, but I think most places do get it done just to cover themselves in the event of someone getting a shock, I do the testing at my place of work to save them the cost of having someone in to do it.

They hopefully don’t do it to cover themselves in the event of someone getting a shock.... my hope is they do it as a test of electrical safety to prevent a shock!!

PAT testing is the most boring electrical work about, PAT testing courses came about because sparkies refused to do it. Pointless and a European over reaction. 15 quid and 1 quid an item. After 20 items you will be insane!

yes I wouldn't think sparkies would take on the work unless they were short of work. And I know how boring it is I do the testing at my place of work, but if the money was decent I could work through the boredom lol.

PAT Testing varies around the UK, depending on local authorities and Insurance companies.

Some Councils insist on it being done as part of Food Licencing conditions.

Others group it into inspections of Bars, Restaurants & Hotels under Health & Safety regs.

Some Fire Authority dept insist on testing being included to comply with Fire Savery inspections and Licence reviews.

Some Insurers insist on it for Business cover, especially those in Customer or Public footfall companies or outlets.

In my hotel career, I know that the major Hotel, Bar and Restaurant companies contract out this work to specialist companies.

One such company in Hull some 5 years ago was looking for more staff, and I applied. The job entailed PAT Testing anywhere in the UK, Monday to Friday. Full training was given, company van supplied, and company credit card for overnight hotel stays, fuel and expenses. Salary then was around £18£ basic, as a Full time employee.

Before I reached the interview, another job came up, which I chose instead.

Check the eawr ‘89 it’s a statutory document and insists portable equipment must be fit for purpose and maintained. That’s your legal requirement.

As for wages my hubbies form pay minimum wage but supply all tools/testers/van/uniform etc.

The average Pat Tester salary in UK is £20,105 per year or £10.31 per hour. Entry level positions start at £16,000 per year while most experienced workers make up to £34,019 per year.
