Fear of a Black Planet remains as fierce as fuck.

I'm well out of touch, but enjoyed lots of late 80s/early 90s hip hop.

Who's doing interesting stuff today?

I was thinking that about the lyrics in rap music. People say it's violent etc but it is intelligent and meaningful. The truth of the World is violent and people just don't want to hear the truth...

I've been a missive B.I.G fan from I first heard the Ready To Die album. The Chronic is another that I couldn't get enough of. Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, A Tribe Called Quest, Big Pun, Snoop Dogg, JayZ, and Slick Rick would have been my other favourites. My list goes on and on though

After a dance to MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Salt n Peppa and Coolio.

Cypress Hill were my first love of rap. Dad bought me the tape I'd asked for without any idea what was on it. I was 13 and learning about life in the ghettos.

Funkdoobiest and House of Pain albums were bought off the back of Cypress Hill love. Good, but nowhere near. The Fugees were also rapping between some melodic, rhythmic beats and beautiful vocals.

Nicked a Fear of a Black Planet and Straight outta Compton out of his CD collection (he was a cock and stole all my porn!). I was a changed man after that. Was looking forward to hearing Public Enemy.. which was angry, but not Gangsta angry. NWA blew me away! Didn't know anything about them. Just the CD. Straight outta Compton is my go to "Anger song" Along with Rage Against the Machines "Killing in the name of". RATM being one of very few groups that fuzed Rock and Rap. Oddly enough RATM helped me understand Public Enemys rage later on in life. Now love them as much as I wish I should have, at the time.

Moving on from NWA I start to hear about Ice T, KRS1, Wu Tang Clan, Ice Cube goes solo and rears shit UP! Biggie.. 2pac.. Snoop, Nate Dogg, Warren G.

Then came Eminem. His first two albums are insane. Each song a story, funk, clever, deep, dark, rapid, venomous, articulate, funny, real, off his fucking rocker! He renders everyone weaponless in the war on words.

50Cent, Xzibit..

After that, my interest dries up a bit.

I've heard and enjoyed rap in Spanish, German and a few other languages. The way a good rapper can work a sentance to fit a beat, or better yet, flow around and within it. Fascinates me and makes me bop my head. The twin tempo's.

I don't understand those who claim to have a love of language, literacy or the many various uses of it. Couldn't find something to love in some Rap songs.

It's poetry.
