"£320k-ish will get you a relatively nice 3 bed terraced with a garden round here - but it's about £5k a year to commute into London - lucky I mostly work from home then I think I must be further north than you. Had mine valued recently £295 and it’s a 3 bed semi. " You're not - am just closer to Cambridge which has an effect. You can get cheaper than that round here but £320ish seems to be the average-ish

"My lovely Edwardian town house (5 beds), 5 minutes from the beach and the train station, views of the harbour, 12 pubs within 10 minutes walk, was £215k " How long ago was that? We have new builds near us, 4 beds, 2 bathrooms, decent kitchen, teeny gardens ~ £500!

"The average house price Southampton is over 350k It's just not achievable! " It’s so not. It’s really sad. My daughter rents as she and her other half just can’t afford to get on the ladder. I was nearer London and had to move a lot further north for what I wanted. Luckily I bought a flat in North London when I was 22. Sold that 20 years ago and bought a lovely house for the same price I sold that for here. It’s just so hard nowadays, I couldn’t do it now.

"I'm trying to buy a house for myself as a first time buyer in Birmingham. Have had a ton on veiwings since last May and have only found a few places I liked. One house I was close to buying I had to pull out of due to damp issues. Kind if regret having to pull out on the deal but couldn't take the risk of an underlying damp issue. That was an end terrace with 2 bedrooms, large upstairs bathroom, reception room and lounge with an extended kitchen and sizeable garden. Was going to buy for 145,000. Had a veiwing today and got another one tomorrow which I might cancel as it's a but far out from where I want to be. At the moment I'm looking around Erdington area. It has pockets of nice quiete areas with not to expensive properties. London is always a going to be expensive unfortunately. " If you can stretch your budget a little there are some lovely properties on Perry beeches in great Barr for 150k as I almost bought one

Money isn't really an issue. I'm just being mega picky on what I buy. Was trying to get into Moseley as I lived there for 10 years but to be honest there's not a lot going round that area and I've kinda gone off it as it's going down hill.

"2 bed flat in my area (no parking, possibly a communal garden) and 2nd bedroom is closet size--maybe 5" x 9"-- goes for around £400K. " For that price round Shropshire/Welsh borders, you can get a rather decent 4 bed detached with possibly 1/3rd of an acre of land....even more round the borders/more remote areas- theres a reason i changed career instead of moving south to accomodate my previous job

Wakefield/Leeds area is dirt cheap, it's where I plan on buying a place

"Foreign 'investment' has fucked the housing market in many cities Local authorities allow developers to get away with it, in fact it is actively encouraged Many new properties lay empty for months, just accumulating value Others are flipped 2 or 3 times before they are even built This pushes prices up That is before we consider locals capitalising on the need for rental properties, which again only serves to drive the market upwards For many, affordable housing is a thing of the past " I’d say that’s true of the south-east, but property prices are fucked elsewhere because houses seen as an investment rather than shelter. That’s not going to change any time soon because everyone has too much to lose.

"Cheap as chips here. You can pick do-upper, 2 up 2 downs for £25-30k. They flip for around £60-75k. I wish I'd got some spare cash and a couple of handymen. " Same here - I quite like the idea of doing houses up and getting them back on the market - the number of them that are lying unoccupied and unloved with families all over the place crying out for a decent place to call home is ridiculous!

" My first home was exactly like I describe. My OH stripped it to brick. Re-plastered through, fitted new kitchen and bathroom suite. It looked like a new show home inside, you'd never have known from outside. We trebled our investment and lived there for 5 years.

Manchester too The City Council is actively seeking and promoting Chinese & Middle East investment in construction & development It has now got to the stage they are even over-ruling their own criteria on % of available affordable housing The City Centre and its immediate surroundings are most affected, but other areas are also being gentrified beyond the reach of the average local house buyer £300 to £350k for a 2 bed terraced is not unusual in some areas I'm sure other city councils have much the same agenda

I thought Lincolnshire was cheap. Four bed, three bathrooms, cloakroom, conservatory, double garage, outbuildings, big garden with workshop and a one bed annex for £230,000...I just hope it's still available when my renovations are complete.
