Pregnancy at my age.

Am I too old?

Has anyone had a baby at my age? Did all go well? Or have I passed the safe age and risk too much?

I’d love to hear other people’s experiences.

If you are the age your profile says then its not excessively old and you would only be just over 60 when the child turns 21. Get a check up with your doctor though make sure you are fine to carry to full term.

I've just had my first at 33 and I'm wanting a whole army of babies now! God be willing I'll have more and If it takes me until my late 30s early 40s to build my family then so be it.

Lots of women are having children later in life and I think as long as you're fit and healthy it shouldn't matter.

Naturally after 35 your body Starts to become less fertile (according to studies) but that doesn't meanie impossible.

My mum was 43 when she had me.

But she passed away 6yrs ago and I would have liked a bit more time with her

I don't think 39 is too old to give birth to a baby - but I think it's maybe too old if you want to

See that child grow up and not be too old to do certain things with them.

I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear - I'm just talking about my personal experience x

This is another concern of mine. I dont smoke during pregnancy (or after!) but the fact that I have been a smoker can be a problem. I don’t know how much of a problem though.

Having had babies in my teens, twenties and late thirties I found as I got older the pregnancy niggles were more difficult to deal with. Tiredness, aches and pains etc are more pronounced the older you get. My advice would be to listen to your body, take advice from your gp and try to rest as much as possible and hopefully you'll enjoy a stress free gestation and birth and a beautiful little person to love!

I believe it affects your chances of actually getting pregnant. In answer to your question, no I don't think 39 is too old

I had mine at 35 and 38. I had a few issues with my second baby and was referred to Foetal Medicine for a few months for monitoring but turned out ok and was referred back to Consultant led (due to my weight) rather than midwifery led. The only issue i then had was that he was a big baby (11lbs 4oz) but in the end they said i was big boned and would be able to handle it, and it turned out it was an easier birth (and a lot shorter!!) than my first birth! I got to experience giving birth on gas and air and feeling that urge to push and the burn sensation you get when the head is ready (i think that’s what it was?!) and thenamazing sense of relief you get when the head is out, whereas on my first i had an epidural and they had to use forceps as he got stuck - so i’d missed out on that.

Voice any concerns you may have - they’ll help put your mind at ease.

My last was breach and I gave birth to her naturally. She was quite a bit smaller though (6lb3) she arrived slightly early as they had tried to turn her and started up contractions.

I will be doing a lot of talking to my gp I think.

I had my last baby at 39, possibly a better pregnancy experience than 1st time around, resulting in a natural birth. Not gonna lie though I struggled more with the sleep deprivation than I did when I was younger.

I know I’m older than most of her friends mums but I keep myself fit, active and up with the times, so will hopefully like my Mum before me will be around for a very long time.

I think it's impossible to say how a pregnancy will go at any age.

I conceived at 46. The pregnancy didn't go well but that's no reason to think that it wouldn't for another woman in the same position.

After years of miscarriages my auntie finally had her healthy baby boy at the age of 49.

I wouldnt have wanted to be a mother later in life. Lots of women do though. One of my friends had her first and only child at 45 shes a perfect mother but im glad its not me

Perhaps I’m not as old as I thought then.

I have no health problems, don’t drive so walk everywhere and have a very active job.

I eat too much but I eat fresh fruit and veg and home cooked food.

I will continue to consider the effect my age may have on a child for eg not being around for as long.

I'm assuming you mean of the physical nature as mentally a parent tends to be more switched on in terms of seeing hazards when they're older?

From my own experience (I turned 35 when my daughter was 6 months old) it hasn't meant there's anything I haven't been able to do with her. I can still outrun her in speed and for longer, but obviously she's only 7! By the time she's 12 or 13 though I imagine the last person she'd want to run with would be her Dad ha...

I taught her to swim and always swim around her covering more distance in the pool in case she runs into difficulty, running alongside a bike holding the back of a saddle while teaching her to ride is no problem either. I can join in her thrills for gymnastics and dancing (though admit I can't do the splits!)

When we go to the play park I'm the Dad who's racing up the climbing wall, hanging upside down from the climbing frame with the backs of my knees locked around the structure and swinging easily through the monkey bars with her while advising her on her technique, most 15-20 years younger are either looking on confused or staring at a screen a lot of the time?

And I'm 42 in less than 2 months.

It needn't be any problem at all, provided you want to do it.

Not at all if you feel able to manage all that a baby entails.

A good friend had her first at similar age to you and the second in her early 40s. No problems with either.

As long as you are fit and healthy and you doctor is happy... go ahead.
