If anyone is watching this weekend, here is a rundown of what's going on from free practice and testing.
MERCEDES: LEWIS HAMILTON + VALTTERI BOTTAS
Every year they get caught up more. Managed to snatch the titles again last year but in truth Ferrari have caught them and maybe passed so it's the toughest challenge yet. I think poor Boots is done.
FERRARI: SEBASTIAN VETTEL + CHARLES LECLERC
Constructors title then seeing they finally moved Kimi on. The grouchy old boss has gone and been replaced by a guy who looks a bit like Egon from ghostusters, kinda? He's going to support Sebby rather than moan at him, but this Leclerc guy could spoil the day.
RED BULL: MAX VERSTAPPEN + PIERRE GASLY
Nothing but praise now they've joined Honda. Let's see if it lasts. New driver Gasly says he's not a number 2. I don't expect much from him, he looks like another Kvyat!
RENAULT: NICO HULKENBERG + DANIEL RICCIARDO
The driver line up gets stronger every year since Renault's return. This is the year Renault are supposed to break free of the midfield and Ricciardo was wearing a shirt saying "Chief Sandbagger" suggesting they're going to surprise. Well we'll see won't we?
HAAS: ROMAIN GROSJEAN + KEVIN MAGNUSSEN
What are these two still doing here? The "American" team step up their game more and more every year but they're never gonna make the top with those drivers, even though they are capable of a top performance - by accident - more often they are just having an accident...
MCLAREN: CARLOS SAINZ (the Son, not the old man who retired from rallying years ago) and CHUCK NORRIS
Somehow they finished 6th last year. Given Alonso's luck, now he's gone they might produce a beast. 15th and 18th in free practice suggest it's not.
RACING POINT: SERGIO PEREZ + LANCE STROLL
Oh what a silly name for a team. It takes some doing to sound worse than "Force India" which we got used to. I really don't think Stroll is that bad at all and can see him getting a top 6 finish or two.
ALFA ROMEO: KIMI RAIKKONEN + ANTONIO GIOVINAZZI
Well no more Sauber then but the Alfa Romeo name is back. I think their road cars are sexy but unreliable but I don't know, I've never driven one. Look shit hot so far.
TORO ROSSO: DANIIL KVYAT + ALEXANDER ALBON
Well they're doing their usual thing, looking really fast in testing but inevitably going on to finish a distant 8th without making a big impression.
WILLIAMS: GEORGE RUSSELL + ROBERT KUBICA
In the name of everything that is good, what is going on? They've gotten even worse! Now they have no technical director, a boss who looks out of her depth and a brick on wheels with no spare parts and little money, with no prospect of things getting any better any time soon. I mean, just... They scored podiums and challenged Mercedes for wins a few years ago, and now in a short time they have tumbled, tumbled all the way to the back. And when they reached the back they still keep tumbling. I have to cover my eyes I can't look.
Poor Kubica - He's been out for 8 years and gonna be rusty. I fear he could be like Zanardi 20 years ago.
OMG that is 20 years ago???!
So after all that I think the constructors championship will be much the same as last year. Move Sauber, ahem, Alfa Romeo up a couple spots, McLaren down a couple and swap Ferrari and Mercedes and we're done! |
