If you were wearing a red dress to a formal, day time event what colour accessories would you put with it to make it really stand out? Not black though.

I do have some good pearls that I was given when I was 40. I don't think they would make enough of a statement though.

I do agree that they go with almost anything.

Gold would look great but I want this to lift a red dress out of the ordinary. Something that will make an impact. I'm thinking shoes and bag too.

I don't think so if you're doing block red colour and then block colour your accessories.

I think red and purple look great together.

I know you said not black but I do think that looks really great with red, just a bit overdone.

I would go with jewels, something like a striking swarovski crystal necklace or something. Also depends on the cut of the dress.

Do you look better in white or cream?

Do you tend to burn or tan in the sun?

Look at your wrists. Do the veins look blue or green?

If you answer the former, you're cool toned, the latter, you're warm toned (more or less). Neutral also exists. Knowing your undertone can help you make more flattering colour choices in general. If black is not an option, but silver suits. Gun metal/pewter would add the darker contrast. Tougher to find shoes and bags in that colour though.

You're most likely cool toned. Depending on the red, navy and silver (or stainless steel etc) could look very striking. (this may also help you choose flattering makeup, databases exist which tell you whether stuff is warm or cool toned, although warm stuff may still suit you)

(I think I'm probably light to medium myself, although my face is a touch darker than most of the rest of me, if that helps)

Better in white and silver, burn if I don't use sun cream but tan if I do, my veins look blue. I'm not sure how to interpret that from what you've said

You're most likely cool toned. Depending on the red, navy and silver (or stainless steel etc) could look very striking. (this may also help you choose flattering makeup, databases exist which tell you whether stuff is warm or cool toned, although warm stuff may still suit you) "

"See what your underlying skin tone is then go from there.

I don't really know. I'm not pale skinned but I'm not olive skinned either.

Do you look better in white or cream?

Do you look better in silver or gold?

Do you tend to burn or tan in the sun?

Look at your wrists. Do the veins look blue or green?

If you answer the former, you're cool toned, the latter, you're warm toned (more or less). Neutral also exists. Knowing your undertone can help you make more flattering colour choices in general. (I think I'm probably light to medium myself, although my face is a touch darker than most of the rest of me, if that helps)

For makeup, if you can, go get yourself colour matched by Mac. You may or may not want any of their makeup, but a lot of online discussion of makeup revolves around knowing your Mac colour (they'll also tell you if you're warm, cool or neutral). I also like going up to a counter, feigning ignorance, and saying, I'm looking for a lipstick for X (work, a red, vampy, whatever). They'll sanitise the lipstick and put it on you. Wear it for awhile, look at yourself in different light, decide on how it looks, feels, and wears. Boots No 7 colour match is also great (and more affordable), although I find Mac more informative. Many counters also do "free" makeovers or lessons with minimum purchase (small enquiries are free, they're just showing you product).

Endless websites exist for best colours for your hair colour, eye colour, skintone, etc.

If all that's too hard: what colours do you feel best in and get most compliments on?

It's not hard as such but I'm not likely to follow that sort of thing through properly.

I suit strong colours red, purple, black, deep green and certain blues. I wear orange, yellow and very deep pink a lot too.

The shorter version would be to go to a counter and get one of those makeovers or lessons. I'm not a shill for Mac but I do find they're more about educating you how to do it yourself than other brands. (valuable lesson for me, for example. I can't wear beige or orange lipstick and my best nudes are pinks. I've stopped buying lipstick that makes me look ill as a direct result)

All this stuff is if you want it, of course. I've found it incredibly useful for dressing and presenting myself in everything I do. I similarly suit bold colours, and there's sometimes a fine line between bold enough and less is more!

I wear very little make up but am considering going to one of the white coated ladies with big eyebrows for a bit of advice.

I'm pretty confident in what I wear (a young colleague described me as her style goal ) but I think it's good to have a shake up now and again to stop yourself getting stale.

For sure! And you do you. I started this mostly as, it really helped me and although it's of greatest application in makeup, it definitely also applies to clothes. The reason I can wear vampy lipstick is the same as the reason I do much better in vivid colours, for example. You probably know a lot of this stuff instinctively. I didn't (mileage varies, of course), but sometimes it helps to make it more concrete.

The Town by The Cross

I haven't read all of the above so if i'm repeating myself ......

Yellow and gold. I'm not a lover of yellow as a main colour but it's daytime so a yellow necklace on the large side. Not bulky though but long , thin elegant plates or curves..... gold trim.

Drop earings. Thin metal wrist bracelets of yellow and gold / alternating.

light bronze to dark gold bag and shoes carefully selected colourwise. MUSTN'T be yellow or gold.

Large silk/chiffon scarf/shoulder wrap nearer the colour of the shoes. Simply patterned if the dress is plain. Plain if the dress is patterned.

Manchester (she/her)

I'm imagining something like a dark steely grey shoe (simple design), with a big statement necklace, like almost a chandelier in a V shape, made of a similar grey with navy "stones". Then navy bag? Maybe too much of a winter vibe for May, but definitely a statement. (and keeping the shoes and bag fairly simple means they're more wearable in future)

Forget what I said....... I think I must have be 'chanelling' Ronald McDonald.

Stay away from Navy and White unless you are going to a B.N.P rally.

"White pearls would go well with a red dress

You're the second person to suggest pearls. I do love them but I don't think they make enough of a statement to lift this dress out of the ordinary

Pearls and make a statement with your shoes and bag x"

The shoes and bag could be used again too.

I'm fond of a wrap, I hadn't thought of that, good idea granny. I don't want to get in to too many colours because as might be evident I'm not great at spotting what goes with what.
